OSU tops Texas Tech; Robinson hurt
Second-half surge sends Cowboys to win over Red Raiders.
OSU linebacker Patrick Lavine outruns Texas Tech's Lyle Leong to score a touchdown after he intercepted Steven Sheffield in the fourth quarter. The score gave the Cowboys a 24-10 lead with 8:06 left in the game. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

STILLWATER — Since their teams combined for 1,328 yards and 94 points when Oklahoma State won here two years ago, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and Cowboy coach Mike Gundy have been determined to play better defense.
Leach did it by promoting Ruffin McNeill to Tech's defensive coordinator position. Gundy hired Bill Young to coordinate the Cowboy defense. What transpired on Saturday, in a Big 12 contest witnessed by 52,811 at Boone Pickens Stadium, looked nothing like the video-game, high-scoring football that was typical during recent Tech-OSU meetings.
This game reflected each program's commitment to defense — and Gundy's commitment to rushing the football.
After averaging less than 2 yards per rush attempt during the first half, the 17th-ranked Cowboys dominated with second-half ball control and recorded a 24-17 triumph.
"It was a tale of two halves," Gundy said. "It's probably as proud as I've ever been of a group of guys rallying together."
OSU running backs Keith Toston and Kendall Hunter combined to rush for 144 yards, while quarterback Zac Robinson ran the ball more aggressively and successfully than at any point this season. Robinson, frequently after being flushed from the pass pocket, carried 19 times for 99 yards.
On his final carry — a 9-yard scramble to the Red Raider 5-yard line with 1:38 left to play — Robinson and Red Raider cornerback Jamar Wall collided in a vicious helmet-to-helmet crash. Robinson's fumble was recovered by Texas Tech's Brandon Sharpe.
Both Robinson and Wall received medical attention for several minutes before they were able to leave the field. It was not immediately determined whether Robinson had sustained a concussion, and his status is uncertain for Thursday's conference contest with Colorado. Gundy said OSU's medical personnel did not seem alarmed after examining Robinson on the sideline.
"Let's just hope that both players ... will be OK," Gundy said. "I had a lot of respect for the Texas Tech coaches and players that came over when Zac went down. That shows a lot of class. Their defensive coordinator (McNeill) walked all the way out on the field to check on him. It's not surprising that they have guys on their staff that have a lot of class."
With 8:06 left, Cowboy senior linebacker Patrick Lavine intercepted a Steven Sheffield pass and scored on a 21-yard return that gave OSU a 14-point cushion. Lavine has five interceptions this season — more than any other linebacker in major-college football.
Cornerback Perrish Cox had two interceptions for the Cowboys, who, with Cotton Bowl and Alamo Bowl scouts watching from the press box, improved to 8-2 overall, 5-1 in the Big 12.
After Robinson's lost fumble, the Red Raiders drove to midfield. On a fourth-down play, Tramain Swindall dropped a Taylor Potts pass and Texas Tech's record dropped to 6-4, 3-3.
During the first half, the Cowboys netted 36 rushing yards on 21 attempts. OSU's offensive line consistently was whipped by the Texas Tech front seven.
During the second half, OSU ran 39 times for 207 yards. The Cowboys had 50 second-half offensive plays. The Red Raiders had 27.
The most important statistic of the night was time of possession. Oklahoma State had an advantage of more than 14 minutes. OSU had 333 total yards. Texas Tech entered with an average of 474 total yards per game but was limited to 357 yards.
"It was one of the better days for a defense that we've had around here," Gundy said.
When the Red Raiders played here two years ago, they had 718 total yards.
"You've got to give Oklahoma State credit," Leach said. "They're a good team and played real well. Here at their place, they're a handful."
Getting a 12-yard Alex Torres touchdown catch and Matt Williams' 34-yard field goal during the second period, the Red Raiders took a 10-7 lead to the halftime locker room. In spite of having possessed the football five times in OSU territory, Texas Tech scored only one first-half touchdown.

Hits like that make you think about encouraging little Johnny to play golf. Has to be a concussion. At least you have CU next if he can't go.

No chance to slide Woof, just one of those freak deals. Great hit. I doubt he plays against CU.
Awesome win, and the best game of the day IMO. My hope is Zack sustains no long term injury from that hit, he clearly had no idea what time zone he was in afterwards.

Great win pokes! I gotta give it to Zac for playing his heart out, if anybody deserves this W, its him! Defense also looked great!

FG, he definitely had time to slide. He was looking for the endzone when he should have realized that the game was already in hand without needing the TD. Run for 5 yards, slide, run the clock, kick a field goal, game over.
Hopefully we'll see him back for CU but just like you, I doubt it. Still, I hope he has a very speedy recovery nonetheless.

Zac was playing the warrior and the hit could have been a disaster in so many ways.
Gundy's been trying to get Zac to run less all year and it's slowed the offensive production down.
However that hit was a perfect example of why Gundy was trying to get Zac to run less.
Z won't play against CU. We'll get to see the future of OSU in Cate and/or Weeden come Thursday.
Let's just hope Zac is 100% ready for ou in Norman. We'll need a healthy Zac for the Bedlam game.
Get healty, Zac. GO POKES!!

Although Zac played a super impressive game, every time he ran I told my husband how much I hated to see quarterbacks take those chances because they are so vulnerable to getting hurt. Sure enough - it made me sick when I saw their helmets hit. I knew my fears had come to fruition.
Zac is an awesome player, he just needs to know when to hold back some and protect himself. He's much to valuable to the team to gamble like this.
My best to Zac - you need to listen to the Dr. better than you do the coach son.
Way to go POKES! GREAT game!

According to Gundy in the post game interview, Zac had been cleared by the doctors, showered and was up eating with his family after the game. He said he thought Zac would be fine. Hope so.

You must have not seen Iowa-Ohio St., FG. That was easily the game of the day. This one DID get interesting after the hit and fumble, though. If Potts doesn't overthrow his guy down the middle it could have gotten verrrry interesting.

I would much rather see the QB run than take a sissy slide like McCoy and several others do. If they don't want to get hit, then don't run. I am a Pokes fan 100% and feel that Zac is an incredible player. Pray for his quick and complete recovery. GO POKES!!!!

O.S.U. should have played Houston after they lost to Texas because I believe O.S.U. would have beaten Houston. Texas beat UTEP and the following week UTEP beat Houston. Texas beat UCF last Saturday and UCF beat Houston Saturday. Just something to think about.

patrat, maybe Zac didn't slide because he didn't see Wall coming.

If Zac's not playing Thursday night, I hope Gundy goes with Weeden at QB. I believe he gives OSU a better chance to win. Weeden has more actual game experience. And, in the spring games and a fall scrimmage I've seen, Weeden looked better. Cate didn't get good results in those game. The OSU coaching staff has no doubt seen Cate a lot more than I have and in more situations. And, Alex absolutely has given a lot to OSU. Still, the Grambling State game and the spring games just make Weeden the guy to choose to me. Beating a desperate Colorado team without Zac playing, if it comes to that, it's no gimme. They beat an A&M team by a comparable score to our score against A&M. If OSU goes with Cate, I'll still pull for him. It wouldn't be what I would do, but I'm not the coaches. Go Pokes !

Why was there no Personal foul flag thrown for helmet to helmet, nor any mention to that fact on the Television Commentary...? That is what the rule was made for - to protect the QB!

As far as alternate QBs are concerned, Totson and Hunter can run the Buffs crazy....

nfocusward...because once the QB is out of the pocket and across the line with the ball he is a running back at that point. and if there was no intentional helmet to helmet spearing then there is no call to be made.
Zac is fine. he will sit out 2 days and play against CU for the first half then get pulled probably.
