Weeden receives promotion
The sophomore is named OSU's No. 2 quarterback after win.
OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden signals first down after a quarterback sneak on fourth down in the fourth quarter Thursday. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

During a Friday media teleconference, Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy reported that Brandon Weeden has been promoted to the No. 2 quarterback role.
"We'll increase Brandon's reps now. We'll give him more. He's earned the No. 2 spot," Gundy said. "We want Alex Cate in our program, but I don't think it would be fair to the team to not increase Brandon Weeden's reps."
On Thursday, with starter Zac Robinson sidelined because of a bruised shoulder, and after Cate was 0-of-9 passing with an interception during one half of play, Weeden rallied the 12th-ranked Cowboys to a 31-28, come-from-behind Big 12 win over Colorado.
"(Weeden) stepped in and made some plays that Zac would make. It was a huge spark," said Cowboy senior running back Keith Toston, who rushed for 172 yards against the Buffaloes.
A 26-year-old sophomore from Edmond, Weeden was 10-of-15 passing for 168 yards during the second half. After OSU trailed 21-10, Weeden threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes a 47-yarder to Toston and a 28-yarder to wide receiver Justin Blackmon.
"I had butterflies," Weeden admitted, "but once you complete your first pass, those are out the window."
Thursday's ESPN-televised victory preserved Oklahoma State's viability as a candidate for a Cotton Bowl berth or the program's first Bowl Championship Series game appearance.
The Cowboys are 9-2 overall, 6-1 in the conference and No. 12 in the BCS standings. OSU closes the regular season with the Nov. 28 Bedlam contest at Oklahoma. Whether Robinson returns to the lineup or Weeden gets the start won't be determined until next week.
During his second-half relief appearance against Colorado, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Weeden certainly did not look like a No. 3 quarterback. During OSU's final touchdown drive, he sustained the possession by connecting on a pair of third-and-long passes — an 18-yarder to tight end Justin Horton and a 27-yarder to wide receiver Hubert Anyiam.
"Those were huge," said Weeden, who has four touchdown passes on only 22 pass attempts this season. "Keep the clock going, keep our offense on the field, keep the drive alive."
It appeared that Weeden had been designated OSU's No. 2 quarterback during the spring-practice session, but Cate has been listed as No. 2 during most of the season.
"Brandon doesn't have a lot of experience, but he did handle the offense well," Cowboy co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said. "You'd rather put him in a game that you have control of. You wouldn't want to throw him out there in a game and ask him to win it, but that's what we had to do and he responded well. The throw he made to Blackmon, right in the corner of the end zone — that was a great throw."
On Friday, Gundy was asked whether he was surprised by Weeden's mobility — his ability to elude pressure and complete crucial passes.
"He's done some of that in practice," Gundy replied. "You guys had seen him do some of that in the spring, where he's moved around and made a few plays.
"You're not sure exactly how players will respond until they're put in a situation where they have to make a play. It will always be that way. There are very, very highly recruited players who come in, and when they're put in a situation where they have to make a play, they don't perform very well. You don't know what a guy will do until he's out there in a pressure situation."

If Texas Tech wins Saturday then Oklahoma State locks down the Cotton bowl right? That would give everybody else 3 conference losses and the bedlam game would not matter as much if lost.

OSU cowboy, that's pretty much correct. Although, if OU loses to Tech and we lose to OU, the Cotton Bowl may give the spot to Nebraska (if they represent the North in the Big 12 championship).
Right now, I', just hoping Zac can get back to at least 90-95% so that he is ready to take on a tough OU defense. We'll definitely need his leadership and experience come Nov. 28th. Go Pokes!

Mike, Nebraska would have 3 conference losses..one to TT, ISU and then Texas and we would only have 2 so I don't see why they would chose that because we would have a lock on the number 2 spot in the conf.

Good Job Weeden!
And good coaching Mr. Gundy.
Find someone doing something right and reward that behavior. I like it!

No, the chance for an OSU BCS game, if OSU beats OU, trumps the Cotton Bowl.

I am just saying if the Fiesta bowl chooses Iowa which is what I am seeing from ESPN, CBSsports and rivals. I know that if we win out the Fiesta Bowl is an option

Word is that the Fiesta Bowl would like to keep their tie in with the Big 12. So as long as Texas wins the conference championship game, and OSU beats OU, OSU should get the Fiesta Bowl.

I'm just glad Gundy put Weeden in when he did.The Cowboys had no passing offense in the first half against the Buffs.
Hopefully Zac will be good to go against the Sooners next week. You KNOW they will be coming after him.
Let the bedlam begin! Ride 'em Cowboys!

Oh yes redbeard. Texas taught the Sooners how you go after a QB and change the whole game. Maybe Zac should sit out just one more game. Just to be safe.

The change in quarterbacks last night was needed. Weeden had some zip on the ball. Cate was throwing floaters and sometimes seemed to be just throwing it out there.

Okay. OSU hangs in and comes back to win in a close one -- one OSU didn't play well in and it's "lucky"?
ou has won a ton of games the same way and it's called "Sooner magic"?
It just goes to show one how the OSU program has changed a lot of it's mental toughness and confidence to hang in, be patient, then come back to win.
Look at the similarities in OSU and ou. Tons of injuries and losses of top players. Injured starting QBs, backup QBs, and a ton of excuses either team could use to lose, but OSU has prevailed and kept it's focus..and won.
ou has faltered, made excuses, turned on it's coaches and players...and lost.
I'd take OSU anyday.

When an athlete DEDICATES 4 years to your program, 1 redshirt and three as a backup, you show more than 10 minutes of loyalty to him.If you don't then recruiting becomes much more difficult. Cate deserved at least 4-5 drives. But Cate also deserved better play calling. Why did Gundy have him throw down field on every throw? Weeden's first pass was a screen to Hunter. Short throws build confidence. But int he end Weeden did the job Cate did not. Way to go POKES!

Phred_53,
I wanted Cate to have an opportunity and he got it. I'm sure he practiced all week as QB1. He got a half to lead the team. He made the right reads, but the passes were all poorly thrown.
Weeden played better. Plus he came in when the team was behind. He did a good job. I think Cate will have other opportunities, but Weeden obviously is QB2. I feel alot better if Zac is not back this week. At least we have a QB2 who can keep the offense competitive.

"I'm not a practice player." Wow, what a bad comment. Just hope he doesn't bring the Allen Iverson attitude to practice. Quarterback is by default a team leader and are going to imitate his energy...that's what makes Zac Robinson so special. Just because you're talented and the game is easy for you, still gotta set an example for the rest of the team. That's leadership. Hope he gets inspired before next year...he definately looks to have the necessary skills to shine on the Big 12 stage next year.
