OU football: Road wrecked
Texas Tech thrashes Sooners in Lubbock
Texas Tech's Baron Batch rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns Saturday against Oklahoma. STEPHEN PINGRY / Tulsa World

LUBBOCK, Texas — Gerald McCoy couldn't believe the premise of the question. He rolled his eyes, shook his head, smirked his mouth and offered a subtle, "Pfff."
Can you believe Oklahoma now needs to beat No. 12 Oklahoma State at home next week just to have a winning record?
"I'll be ready," McCoy said. "Sooners will be, too."
McCoy and the Sooners were not ready on Saturday. Not ready for the precision and focus of the Texas Tech offense. Not ready for the intensity of the Texas Tech defense.
And not ready for a 41-13 subjugation at the hands of the Red Raiders.
"Their team really played well," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "Really beat us on both sides of the ball. It was pretty obvious."
The 28-point margin matched the second-worst beating for Stoops by a Big 12 foe. It was OU's third straight loss in Lubbock. It was OU's fifth collapse in six games away from home this season.
But this one, against a team many observers consider below standard for coach Mike Leach, may top them all.
"We just got outplayed and we got outcoached," senior guard Brian Simmons said. "They were more prepared than us in all aspects of the game."
OU fell to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in Big 12 play, the Sooners' worst marks this late in 11 seasons under Stoops. Tech improved to 7-4 and 4-3.
OU had been losing road games the hard way this season — by a point, by a field goal, by a TD. This, against one of college football's best defenses, was by a landslide.
The Sooner defense came in ranked sixth nationally in total yards allowed and fifth in points allowed, and hadn't allowed more than 364 yards in a game this season. But Texas Tech piled up 549 yards total offense, nearly a Stoops-era record.
And the offense continued its inability to perform away from Norman. OU is averaging nearly 50 points a game at home, but now averages 16 points away from Owen Field. This time, OU gained just 310 yards, rushed for 48 (an anemic 1.8 per carry) and converted 3-of-13 third downs. Quarterback Landry Jones was 18-of-35 for 262 yards, but was wildly inaccurate at times.
"Just the whole team, collectively, they beat us in every phase of the game, man," senior running back Chris Brown said. "Ran the ball better than us, threw it better than us, defense played better than ours. They just dominated this game."
Jones said losing on the road "sucks" and tried to shoulder the blame.
"I didn't play very well," he said, "and obviously I need to play better for us to win."
OU lost another starter on the offensive line (center Ben Habern has a broken leg) and possibly two on defense (defensive tackle Adrian Taylor and linebacker Ryan Reynolds both left with unspecified leg injuries). The departures seemed to have little bearing on the outcome.
Tech marched for a quick field goal on its opening drive, then, after two field goals from OU's Patrick O'Hara gave the Sooners a 6-3 lead, Tech put together a pair of second-quarter TD drives for a 17-6 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Tech got another TD and a field goal to run it to 27-6. But the real killer was an 18-play, 80-yard drive that lasted more than seven minutes and put Tech on top 34-6 early in the fourth.
"As good as we've been playing on defense all year and we allow something like that?" McCoy said. "That's just no heart, no pride at the end of the game. That's just not good enough. That's not Oklahoma."
Neither was the defense played against a Tech running game that, in Leach's pass-first system, is never more than an afterthought and, before Saturday's carnage, ranked 117th out of 120 teams nationally, averaging just 71 yards per game.
Baron Batch ran for 136 yards and two TDs while backup Eric Stephens gained 46 on just eight carries.
"They kicked our butts, from the opening kickoff through their last play on their last drive," defensive end Jeremy Beal said.
Leach was Stoops' offensive coordinator in 1999, the last time OU had five defeats. Now he's the winningest coach in Tech history with 83 wins, passing Spike Dykes.
OU's current offensive coordinator, Kevin Wilson, said last week he wanted to see how the team responded to another road test. After the offense collapsed at Nebraska, everyone looked comfortable and happy again in a 65-10 thrashing of Texas A&M. But this was another road game. And this was another dismal failure.
"It was a bad one," senior offensive tackle Trent Williams said. "The worst I've ever experienced. It's tough, man, it's tough."

My oh my, how the mighty have fallen.
I love OU football, still do. We gave up.
However you look at it, the coaching staff is responsible. They recruited and motivated these kids.
4 Million dollars per year? I don't think so.
Notre Dame, I can only hope.

OU loses 41 - 13.
It's like Nebraska only worse. Stoops didn't have his team ready to play. How does 5 losses in a season grab you OU fans? The Sooners are "bowl eligible" with their 5 wins but if they don't beat OSU next week I doubt any bowl invitations will be forthcoming.
Even if they do wind up 7 - 5 Shreveport isn't as nice in January as is Tempe, or Miami, or New Orleans, or Pasadena.
Don't you Sooner fans reckon it's time for Stoops to be "kicked upstairs"?
As far as the Notre Dame job is concerned, if I were the Athletic Director at Notre Dame, I would, at this moment, be making travel arrangements to Lubbock, Texas to talk to Coach Leach.

You losers are pathetic. You think people care about what you think? You think you have the answers to the problems and have the authority to express those? Anybody who wants to blame the coaching has NO IDEA about football. Its PLAYERS that play the game and their execution of plays. Just SHUT UP and root for your team.

Classy Sooners Tough Game...Classless Gooners hahahahah defense sucked wind...so great...not no more. Tech ran and passed all over the Defense. Offense one worder..pathetic. No run,...No pass...Result is NO WIN. OU Gooners got pulverized. Hahaha..I doubt even the toilet bowl would want you as you would stink it up. Don't whine about injuries and that you are running out of experienced players when you keep the first string in the 4th quarter of blowout games to run up the score. Take your beaten butts up to OkieState next week to get them spanked again. Ha ha ha ha ....Gooners

Here is to all the fair weather OU fans, OSU fans, and idiots...We lost! We had another injury to an offensive lineman. We have a freshman QB. We do not have a tight end. We have been killed by injuries.
Bob Stoops is a great coach. Can you name another coach who has done as well as Bob in the last 10 years? Oh, I know, he loses BIG bowl games. I would rather go to a BCS bowl game and compete, then to go to a mid level bowl and win against a 6-6 team. He is having a bad year. I think he deserves a year like this. Oh...and I do remember the USC game. That game was horrible, but it happens.
This has been a bad year. We can't win on the road, and we have had some bad penalties. Every team goes through this. Name me one team who hasn't had a bad year or some frustrating losses.
I am still a big OU fan, season ticket holder, and a fan of Bob Stoops.
Go Sooners, and upset the Pokes!!!

Hey BOBO...you are pathetic. 1st, the first string wasn't in. We have been playing with 2nd and 3rd string players all year. They are in to get experience. 2nd, the game is in Norman. Typical OSU fan.

Injuries, poor preparation and coaching equal a down year. Hopefully Bob will switch up his staff post season. Gary Patterson of TCU consistently turns out winning seasons with much less talent than Bob. Gary Patterson to TCU? If I'm Bob I throw what I have accomplished in the trash and re-tool so I'm not replaced by someone like/or Gary Patterson.

OSU fans need to stop talking trash so early. I don't care what anyone says, OU is a whole different animal in Norman.
Tough break, Sooners. As an OSU fan, I really didn't see this coming. I only hope this doesn't fire up the team in a big way for senior night next week...

The bad thing, other than the loss, is having to face the fact that Landry Jones just isn't a first string quarterback. And it doesn't help that the team has lost so many offensive players. Still, the losing rests squarely upon the shoulders of the QB because he hasn't done his job very efficiently. But, as many of you say, I am an OU fan, have always been an OU fan and will always be an OU fan. And I like Stoops and have no wish for him to depart as a few of the fairweather folks are saying. OU must still face the indignity of having another loss if Zac Robinson is healthy enough to play for OSU next weekend. Landry is a far cry from a Sam Bradford and won't be able to compete with Robinson. Frankly, I hope the team opts out of a bowl and spends the remainder of the year recuperating so they can be ready next August. Hopefully with a healthy and viable QB, offense and defense. Go OU!

I think what people forget is that OU is a different team in Norman. And trust me...when OU goes 7-5 expect them to go to the Sun Bowl or Alamo Bowl. Trust me, any little bowl will take OU because they still have a big fan base. OSU fans, you guys almost lost to Colorado at home! Check out OU's home games, and see what is goin to happen in Norman next week!

OSU fan here. The Sooners have had some tough injury breaks this year. OSU has too. The difference being OSU's linemen are older and more experienced on the offensive side of the ball, as well as OSU having a more experienced healthy quarterback (at least until last weekend). I think the Sooners will be tough at home. I think it will be a very entertaining game where, as usual, anything can happen. Hope all the players stay out of harms way. Bedlam!!!!!

Yes, a 6-6 OU team (no game Bob might out coach Gumby in last one though)will absolutely go to a bowl. Fans expect it. And, if they play some other 6-6 team, will probably win.
