OSU has handled its adversity

STILLWATER — The Bedlam crying towel that's certain to be passed around Oklahoma this week needs to save a dry spot or two for Oklahoma State.
OU (6-5, 4-3 Big 12) won't be the only team in Saturday's 11:30 a.m. rivalry showdown that will be battling to overcome adversity. OSU (9-2, 6-1) has endured many of the same problems this season as the Sooners.
The only difference is that the Cowboys have handled many of their challenges better than OU, and with much less fanfare.
It's obviously going to make national news when the defending Heisman Trophy winner, Sooner quarterback Sam Bradford, is lost for most of the season because of a shoulder injury.
The suspension of OSU wide receiver and Heisman candidate Dez Bryant might not be as devastating as the loss of Bradford, but it's in the same area code. It took several players with less talent to replace the versatile and dynamic Bryant. But they did it.
OU All-American tight end Jermaine Gresham was lost in preseason with a knee injury. OSU's best tight end, Jamal Mosley, who was supposed to replace All-American Brandon Pettigrew, left school before the season opener.
Freshman middle linebacker Tom Wort was the sensation of OU's fall camp before he went down with a knee injury. OSU senior Orie Lemon, considered the Pokes' best linebacker, also blew out a knee before the first game.
Are you starting to get the picture?
Yes, OU has suffered more season-ending injuries to starters than at any time in coach Bob Stoops' 11 seasons. To his credit, Stoops hasn't used the medical problems as an excuse for what would be his worst season at OU if the Sooners lose to the Cowboys.
But others have sung the Sooners' blues so loud that it has drowned out and overshadowed the myriad of obstacles and turmoil coach Mike Gundy has dealt with in his fifth season at OSU.
"It hasn't been an easy road for us, but we found a way to keep grinding it out," OSU linebacker Andre Sexton said Monday. "We're not worried about trying to display that to the media to make people feel sorry for us in any way."
Sexton is one of 22 seniors who refused to let his final season go south. Several used their experience to hold together a team that was suddenly forced to rely on inexperienced players at key positions.
"It's been a bad year for the Oklahoma team as far as injuries and adversity," Sexton said. "I think we've handled it differently. And maybe in a better way, just because of the maturity of the senior class and the leadership."
The numbers don't lie. The responses OSU and OU had to their troubled times has been dramatically different.
Ranked No. 3 in the preseason polls, a young OU team needs wins in Bedlam and a bowl to avoid becoming the first Stoops team to lose six games. The unranked Sooners have played well at home but downright awful on the road, going 1-5 away from the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium.
No. 9 in the preseason, OSU has only slipped to No. 12. Once an easy target on the road, the Cowboys are 3-0 away from Boone Pickens Stadium and are a win over their bitter rivals away from potentially making school history by playing in a BCS bowl.
After Bradford went down, OU had to rely on redshirt freshman quarterback Landry Jones. OSU had to dip down to its third-team quarterback to survive a scare last week from Colorado, when three-year starter Zac Robinson was sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Although that was the first game he missed, Robinson has battled injuries most of the year and survived an early-season slump. While Robinson has been the heart of OSU's offense, backup senior running back Keith Toston became the unit's soul when All-American running back Kendall Hunter missed most of the season with injuries.
"We've been through a lot this year," Sexton said. "We've had our ups and downs. We've had a lot of things going on inside this program and we've found ways to overcome them."
A fifth-year senior, Sexton has ridden the OSU roller coaster as long as any Cowboy. He's finally so close to attaining goals he wasn't sure were possible when he arrived in Stillwater — a win over OU and a shot on the national stage in a BCS bowl.
"We've been talking about wanting to gain that respect in Oklahoma for a long time, to where we're not mentioned as like their (Sooners') stepchild," Sexton said. "And now, it's all right there in front of us. So many things can happen if we win this game."
If OSU breaks OU's six-game Bedlam winning streak, Sexton will probably need a crying towel. But it'll be used for tears of joy.

Dave, if you equate the injuries of an OU player with those of an OSU player, your column makes no sense.
Yes, there have been some "whoa is me" feelings around the Sooner base.
But, seriously, can you honestly say OSU and there whatever if ever draftees are equal to or more important than OU's NFL draftees?

OSU has a Head Coach who "coached" this year.
Therein lies the difference between OSU and OU.

Skirmish speaks like the typical Swooner fan.
It's "Woe" not "Whoa"(as in stopping a horse).
And it's "their" (as if to possess), not there(as in a direction -- ie over there).
But, you can't expect most Swooner fans to know these things. English composition is taught in school.

OU continually has highly rated recruiting classes. You'd think they would have backups ready to step up. Injuries happen to every team in all sports. Better have backups ready to go when the front line goes down.

Skirmish,
You made Stillers point even more. For all of the "NFL caliber" talent in Norman, how come they have lost so many games? News alert.. the Outland thropy finalist (and more than likely first lineman to be selected in the NFL draft) is at OSU and Dez will be the first WR selected at the NFL draft.
But that's not the point. OSU has overcome alot and done it in a great way. Now they need to finish the job .....beat OU and go to the Fiesta.

Eric-I dont think we should compare the number of players who will be drafted from OU this year vs. people who will be drafted from OSU, its not even close! OU could have 3 go in the top 15 (bradford, gresham and McCoy)

Does anyone even consider other factors. OU has been bad this year but lets compare schedules. OSU's 3 road games thus far Iowa State, Texas A&M, Baylor. Yes they won 3 road games but is that anything to get excited about. OU has lost on the road to Miami, Nebraska, and Tech mush better teams. If OU played OSU's schedules they would have "overcome adversity" better this year as well. As far as I can tell OSU on a neutral field with Zac at QB is a better team this year, but injuries arent the only thing to consider and you cannot compare the loss of Bradford to any of OSU's injuries no matter how great Dez is. OSU escaped at home to a awful Colorado team without their starting QB, that should tell you how important a great QB is.

Dave compares a no-name, first year tight end to Jermaine Gresham? Nice streeeeeetch. Robinson having minor injuries to battle through vs. Sam being, basically, lost for the year? Still streeeetching. Yes Dave, all teams have injuries to overcome throughout a season, but come on now.
How many sq. ft. in Vail, Dan? Top bunk of a service workers unit? Even that ain't cheap in Vail, is it? Just don't tell me you have a spacious condo on the golf course because then I would know you didn't get a degree (cow ropin' certificate I should say) from OSWho.

You got me there DanDDiver. It must have been my Keanu Reeves movie marathon that took over my grammar.
Eric, first, do you really believe a victory over the Swooners will put the pokies on top of the pecking order for Fiesta Bowl honors. it seems that Iowa and Boise State will have a big say.
Regarding your two high draft picks, one is healthy and has played all year. The same cannot be said for the Swooners. The other lied repeatedly to be suspended from the team, once again no injury involved. The OSU tight end mention in this story was not hurt, just trouble with the law.
My point is that injuries to key players (QB, TE, OL) took its toll for the Swooners, while the Pokies just could not get out of the way of themselves.
Second,

dumbokie,
You have identified the problem. The Stoops brain trusts hates, hates, hates playing backups. He would prefer to run up the score than develop talent.
Good point, well taken. Swooners still over Pokies

Okay, sooner chumps, losing Robinson for one game does not equate to losing Bradford for the season. We can agree on that. But I think your simpleton mind are missing the greater point, which is that losing your all-american #1 receiver, and all-american #1 running back is as big a loss, if not moreso, than losing your heisman #1 QB.
Then, when you add up all the other losses, at TE and on defense, one could argue that in total, both teams have lost an equal percentage of power players.
And others make a good point, which is that for all the "powerful" recruiting that OU has done, I would think that OU would have a far better stable of backups than they have. In other words, OSU's freshmen (mainly receivers) have far outplayed OU's freshmen (O line).

Wow, so much ignorance, so little time.
Skirmish, why does it matter if key players are NFL draftees or not? Are there not tons of college players that are important to their team's success that aren't high draft picks? Sittler also didn't mention our starting running back who missed most of the season with an ankle/foot injury. Was that not a significant loss just because he isn't going pro this year? Dave also compared the loss of our 3 year starter LB and best player on defense to OU's "sensation of OU's fall camp." Is that not the same as the TE comparison?
El Capitan, OSU will have at least 2 players picked in the top 15. So the sooners will have one more...woooooaaaaahhhh. Huge difference there.
Amorr, your argument is the worst. Are you really going for the weak road schedule argument? Because I can then turn around and say Texas A&M crushed the Texas Tech team that crushed OU. Where did they crush Tech? Oh yeah, in Lubbock. Comparative scores are silly but so is trying to say how good a team is based on who they HAD TO (they didn't choose to) play on the road. Also, Nebraska is NOT that good. Iowa State beat them for crying out loud.
Assassin, Zac has a "minor" shoulder injury? Talk about stretching. He has a deep shoulder bruise on the same shoulder he separated a year ago. Add that to the head injury (I know for a fact it was a concussion) also endured and I would hardly call that "minor."
Read any article in either of the Oklahoma papers and it will tell you that the Fiesta bowl is STRONGLY considering OSU with many sources saying that it is essentially a lock if they beat OU.

Gee, Zac is out for a home game against a really bad CU team. Let Weeden play on the road against Miami, neutral site against Texas, and at Nebraska..see what happens. OU is down to 3 players on Offense who started last year. This should be the title to your article Sittler "Gundy's best to take on Stoops worst and the line on the game is still "pick em"

p003220, the line hasn't been set because nobody is sure if Zac will play. A three year starting QB's ability to play probably has a lot to do with what the point spread is, don't you think?

I think you all have forgot about 1 more draftee from OSU, Parish Cox. He is going to go in the first round, by far the best corner in the nation. One more thing, where did OU's last 2 great QB's end up? Heupel is now coaching at OU and Jason White is selling cars somewhere.

State cannot pass up this oppotunity, Gundy has not beat ou as a player or the head coach, although I still can't believe Parker did not catch that ball in 88. Sure ou is unbeaten at home this year, but look at their home games. The best team they have beat at home or really at all is K-State. OSU is the markee game on their home schedule, and outside of Texas, the best team they will have played this year. This is the first time in my 37 years of being a STATE fan that the COWBOYS have the better team. OSU cannot let this oportunity go by without taking advantage of it!

Thanks meximike for setting me straight...you are right the team you play and where you play them has nothing to do with whether you win or not. If this game was on a neutral field or in Stillwater I would pick OSU but in Norman OU is a different team. That is why they ARE favored by 10.

I've read that some believe Mike Gundy should be the Big 12 Coach of the year, because he has done so much with so much adversity. I would like to nominate Coach Stoops as the Worst Big 12 Coach of the year. He has done so little with so much.
