Don't expect Stoops to sacrifice assistants

NORMAN — As news trickled out of Kansas last week about coach Mark Mangino's troubles, it didn't take long for the wheels to start turning for some Oklahoma fans.

"Do you think (Bob) Stoops will get rid of (James) Patton and bring Mangino back to OU as the O-line coach?" a Sooner supporter asked in a text.

The questions and suggestions didn't stop there. Another inquiring mind wondered if Stoops might dump offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and rehire his close friend and former O-coordinator, Chuck Long.

And so it goes these days at OU. One season you're an irreplaceable genius, the next you're a clueless bum.

A year ago, defensive coordinator Brent Venables was the target of these fickle agents of change. Until his unit's unexpected drop off in last Saturday's loss at Texas Tech, Venables was hailed as this season's savior — the only mind bright enough on the OU staff to save the struggling Sooners from total collapse.

Wilson and Patton have replaced Venables on the most-wanted list by those angry and frustrated fans who want heads to roll. Never mind that they were integral parts of a record-smashing offense that carried OU all the way to the 2008 BCS national title game.

Mangino, who was the O-coordinator when OU won the 2000 national crown, will probably be looking for work shortly after KU's final game Saturday against Missouri. Witch-hunting KU officials seem hellbent on railroading Mangino out of Lawrence.

Long, who took over the offense when Mangino left for KU, is already available. After his contract forced him to sit out this season, Long recently reached a monetary settlement with those San Diego State officials who fired him last year.

So what are the chances Stoops will dump Wilson and Patton in hopes that Mangino and Long can help revitalize an OU program that enters Saturday's Bedlam game with Oklahoma State still fighting for a winning season?

Based on Stoops' track record at OU, I'd guess there is zero chance of any of that happening. Loyalty is big for the Sooners' head coach, who hasn't fired a single assistant in his 10-plus seasons.

Stoops seemed to indicate at his Tuesday press conference that he doesn't intend to start making scapegoats out his assistants, even though OU is 6-5 overall, 4-3 in the Big 12 and in serious jeopardy of having hated-rival OSU snap the Sooners' record 29-game home winning streak.

"I'm not a knee-jerk guy; I'm not going to overreact," Stoops said. "I'm always critical of what we're doing as coaches. I think there's some times where we've handled it better than other times.

"I also understand the handicap we've had to play with. In the end, there's a long track record of what we've done here and how it's been successful and our mode of operation and how we've done things."

There is also a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude that's always prevalent amongst some members of the Sooner Nation. They don't care how many records you've set or how many players you've lost to injury. "Just win, baby," isn't a motto used exclusively by the Oakland Raiders.

In addition to loyalty and previous accomplishments, I don't think Stoops will sack anyone because he's a realist. He knows that even the most brilliant coaches can't win without players.

Why do you think Florida coach Urban Meyer broke down in tears this week when he discussed the seniors who are playing their final home game Saturday? An offensive mastermind, Meyer knows it's those seniors instead of his coaching wizardry that has the Gators on the verge of a third national title in four years.

You don't have to be a Sooner diehard to know OU's offense has been decimated by injuries. Yet, it's amazing how dumb Wilson and Patton became when they lost Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford after he played less than two games.

Bradford's injury ignited a domino effect. It quickly spread to an already thin and inexperienced offensive line, and even seeped over to the defense in recent weeks, which might explain OU giving up 41 points to Texas Tech while only scoring 13.

If you think about it, Stoops has basically lost two classes of recruits. There were the seniors who moved on after last season, and then all the seniors who have been wiped out by injuries this year.

"Everything in life doesn't go your way," Stoops said. "This has been a very unusual year with the way it's all happened and you have to work through it.

"Some things are our fault as coaches. Some things are their fault as players. Other things (like injuries) are nobody's fault."

Stoops certainly isn't immune from criticism. Noting OU's 1-5 road record this season and the longest home winning streak in the nation, one pundit suggested that instead of "Big Game Bob," Stoops' new nickname should be "Home Game Bob."

Here's an idea: Fire Stoops and bring back John Blake and Howard Schnellenberger as co-head coaches.

That's no more ludicrous a suggestion than those short-memory critics who are demanding Stoops show Wilson and Patton the door.

Sportswriter, as a class, are the laziest reporters in all of journalism. The events they cover are scheduled in. They don't have to scramble for a story. Therefore, they protect the status quo. This article is demonstrative of that. This OU team wasn't any good in August, before the injuries to Bradford et al. The OU football culture doesn't tolerate humiliation very well. Never has. Brother Sittler might get up off the couch and write about that.

Yes our o line is getting slapped around like a bunch of girls because they are young and inexperienced, however this may be exactly what they needed. Hopefully this season will be the motivation in the off season to prepare them for next year.

Anyone screaming for coaches' heads after the injuries this season are fair weather fans at best. Boomer Sooner!

Enjoy it while it lasts, Rhy, because you know it won't last long. Nice article, Dave. Hopefully the idiot Sooner fans with no life beyond OU football will read this and learn something about the big picture and the qualities Bob has that make him successful in football and in life.

When I saw that Wilson couldn't figure out that he had a freshman phenom in DeMarco Murray & kept him playing behind 2 RB's that had a fraction of his talent, that's when I wanted Wilson gone....Playing Murray on special teams after he had proven himself to be a valuable piece of OU's future was ridiculous....

Anyway, if all the coaches stick around for next season, it will be more of the same....

If Wilson stays on the payroll, I see Josh Heuple finding someone else to coach for....I'd rather have someone who understands, believes & bleeds "SoonerMagic", rather than someone who does the same with "NorthwesternMagic"....

I'd also rather have an National Championship QB running my offense than a offensive lineman....Or was Wilson a QB himself during his playing days....What did he play & where????Were his teams good????

Anyone who says Bob Stoops should be fired is completely out of their mind. Once he is gone, we will spend the next 100 yrs trying to replace him. Sure we may find someone who can equal his wins, but I am not sure we ever find another another coach with his high character. Stoops is old school, he believes you show up every Saturday with the intention of winning, but not at all costs. He is a man of high character and strong morals, a very rare set of traits in todays society and even more rare in college football. A great role model for Oklahoma.

Hey Sittler!

For someone who does want to be lectured to, you have a lot of gall. There are much bigger issues here. I think that most Sooner faithful realized that this was going to be a down year. In addition, no one could have seen the injuries. It happens. Moreover, if that were the extent of it, I would tend to agree with you. Nevertheless, there are deeper issues here. First, why is the cubbard dry? I realize that in today's college football world, no team has the luxury of being two to three deep in almost all positions as OU and others were "back in the day." However, it seems as if we have no talent at all in the reserve positions. Second, why hasn't the coaching staff been working with these reserve players last year to get them ready for this year? Third, what happened to all the class recruits that we supposedly had and have? Seems like a waste of scholarship money. Fourth, why hasn't Landry Jones improved? My God, you have Josh H on the sideline to coach him and he has had a whole season to improve. You do not even see Bradford talking to him after every series! Is he a bust? Fifth; why do we continue running that vanilla offspring of Spurrier's "fun and gun" offense and instead, go to something allows for success? And what is with the pistol offense?

I still say that Bob Stoops is responsible for this mess and I am not a "fair weather" fan. I am sure that Sittler remembers the days of the old "Chuck Chuck" bumper stickers of the late 1960s. If he had not listened to a young Barry Switzer, the OU program would have continued sinking. And the rest is history.

Bringing back Chuck Long would be a mistake. Getting rid of Wilson would not be. It is time to retool and rebuild. The well is dry. Stoops should get 3 years to get another NC or he is gone (with only 2 years to go on his contract, which makes the buyout cheaper). If he meets that expectation, then he gets another 3 or 4 years to win one more. Etc.
Get a grip Sittler.

Great points tulsndn...and Boomer...calling for assistant coaching changes is a far cry from calling for B.S. to be fired...Dumb is when you protect the problem and don't address it. Kevin Wilson couldn't call a good play from inside the 5 yard line against Florida and has consistently gone brain dead inside the 20. Sometimes you have to look beyond your hard headed stubborn attitude (B.S.) and see that this program needs new direction from its offensive coordinator's spot. If that means making the hard decision, then let's run it like a business and get new blood. This is still a business and B.S. needs to know who the investors are. We don't accept mediocrity and Wilson is just that. A great group of seniors last year against sometimes lesser teams made Wilson look better than he is/was. Look at the predictability factor...we completely stink at times...why??? Let's look at the positive side of the coin for a while, not the negative side...we need a change on offense and B.S. is just too stubborn to admit it publicly. It's time to stop the get rid of the B.S. and get the Bob Stoops back....Just my opinion...

There's 2 clueless ones now. That didn't take long. Hey phd, I hope you didn't use the word "cubbard" in your dissertation, since it's not a word. I think the word you're looking for is 'cupboard'. Asking the question, "Why hasn't the coaching staff been working with these reserve players to get them ready for this year?", makes you look more like 'gedwarrior". You and the ndn missed the (short) bus.

BOOMER How do you so much about LITTLE GAME BOB'S character and morals?

He just has not been caught yet. He and the others knew about Rhett Bomar and others "working" @ a car dealship.

Remember AT&T Kelvin Sampson --- Until he was caught he had great character and moral.

Sooner fans struggle with any negetive truths.

That's the first fair article Sittler has written in weeks. I didn't think he had it in him. stoops is here to stay and I am thrilled about it. Getting rid of Kevin Wilson yes the same Kevin Wilson that engineered the highest scoring offense in CFB history should be here to stay as well. Everyone has a down year and this is ours. Lets be fans and supporters of our team especially when they need us the most. Why is it necessary to get rid of or fire people when things don't go the way you hoped they would. I for one am going to continue to root for my Sooners no matter what. BOOMER SOONER !!!!!!!!!!

Hello Richard. Once I saw the headline I knew you would be all over it. Stoops handled the Bomar situation very quickly and before the NCAA put their punishment on it. He has also gotten rid of certain players for bad charecter "Jarboe" the you tube rap star.
Show me some evidence that he has bad morals.

No doubt, ludicrous to talk about Stoops pr anyone else down there but that said, what do injuries have to do with continued undisciplined play and senseless personal fouls? No one is on a witch hunt here Dave or being unreasonable BUT when you make an absurd amount of money, maybe the expectations are absurd too. People dont care why you're losing, all they know is there are 4 million reasons why Stoops should win, fair or not.

Man you guys are real scary but sadly I agree with most of you. We let Sumlin go to Houston and look at what he has done albeit for 1 year.

Quick, someone name me a former Stoops assistant that has won big and for long periods of time (as in 2-3 years in a row or longer). Lil Stoops showed flashes of brilliance this year but the wo be gones are still hanging around Tucson.

Long got fired from San Diego State and replaced by the former Ball State (now there's a power house) coach.

Sumlin is doing great at Houston but this is his first year and he inherited all of Briles players. He has made some noise in recruiting down here in Texas but as they say - thay aint signed yet........... and the beat goes on........

While the staff at OU practices the fundamentals of recruiting only marquee skill players, the staff at UT recruits the big uglies first and then goes after the marquee players. You cant be a stud QB with out a bunch of mean, hardworking O boys in front of you. Same goes for RB, etc.....

Bring Mangino back and let him recruit the big uglies - it takes one to know one.
Every once in a while let him help with offensive schemes.

Do not bring back Long. He will only be here until he can find his next job and he wants to teach QB's how to throw deep. That means staying in the pocket most of the time and that means you better have some studs upfront.

The clock is ticking, go get us some linemen (on both sides) or the next 2-3 years are going to be very difficult for us Sooner fans.
Happy Turkey Day,
CS
