OSU Notebook: Weeden's moment

OSU quarterback Zac Robinson is expected to play against OU on Saturday, but backup Brandon Weeden said he's ready to step in if needed. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

Because of his second-half performance against Colorado, Brandon Weeden went from being a mostly anonymous backup quarterback to being viewed as the favorite for Oklahoma State's starting job in 2010.

In last week's ESPN-televised game at Boone Pickens Stadium, Weeden rallied the 11th-ranked Cowboys from a 21-10 deficit to a 31-28 victory.

In relief of Alex Cate, who had been ineffective in starting for the injured Zac Robinson, Weeden was 10-of-15 passing for 168 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

After the game, "I had 137 text messages," says Weeden, a 26-year-old sophomore. "My Facebook was going crazy. I don't know how (Robinson) does it. He gets it a lot more than I do."

During the first half, Cate was 0-of-9 passing with an interception. The Cowboys trailed 14-10 at halftime.

"Coach Matthews (quarterbacks coach Robert Matthews) told me that I would take the first series (in the third quarter)," Weeden recalls. "Obviously, I was excited and looking forward to the challenge. I felt bad (for Cate). He threw some good balls. Things just didn't go his way.

"If you're an athlete, you want to compete. You want the ball in your hands. I had fun. I had a blast."

Bedlam uncertainty: Continuing his recovery from a deep shoulder bruise, Robinson has practiced this week. Coach Mike Gundy says he expects Robinson to play in the Bedlam game. Last week, Gundy also expressed confidence that Robinson would play against Colorado. Robinson didn't.

Weeden, who was elevated to the No. 2 position after his Colorado heroics, says he'll be prepared if called upon.

"As a backup quarterback, it's your job to be ready," Weeden said. "They called my number and, fortunately, I was ready. This week, you're hoping that Zac can go. We'll see."

A Gundy Thanksgiving: On Thursday, at the Midwest City home of their parents, Mike Gundy and his brother, OU running backs coach Cale Gundy, will share a Thanksgiving meal.

Football and the upcoming Bedlam game will not be discussed, Mike Gundy said.

"It has never really affected Cale and I because we see it as a job," Gundy said. "We don't talk about football much when we're around each other in the offseason. The only difficult thing is (the family Thanksgiving dinner). We have to do that, which is the right thing to do."

After a Thursday morning practice, Cowboy players and coaches will gather for a Thanksgiving lunch. Players then are dismissed for 24 hours.

Black uniforms: For the Colorado game, the Cowboys wore all-black uniforms designed by Nike. Gundy says he wanted to have his players in an all-orange uniform, but decided on the day before the game to go with the black jerseys-black pants look. The Cowboys wore black uniforms for the first time since 1994.

All-orange uniforms equal a bit fat FAIL!!! Never go w/ that unless you're trying to get people to lose their vision. The all-black version could have been designed a lot better, Nike blows in general, look at TU's uniforms with that stupid back stripe, but I think white pants would go better w/ the black top.

Brandon, Alex Cate threw a lot of ducks, but it's good that you are so politically correct.
