Dramatic finale for TU
Tulsa ends frustrating season with OT victory

Tulsa's football players stormed the Chapman Stadium field like they had captured a national championship.

Smiles were abundant and tears were choked back after the Golden Hurricane closed its season with a 33-30 overtime victory against Memphis on Friday afternoon.

The weight of a six-game losing streak was lifted. However there was no talk about the past two months following this thriller.

Focus was placed on a senior class of 16 leaving the field as winners.

"This is a special group of guys," said coach Todd Graham, eyes moist and voice quivering.

Tulsa (5-7 overall, 3-5 in Conference USA) may have never celebrated if not for Kevin Fitzpatrick's strong leg and James Lockett's first career interception on the final play of his career.

Memphis — with its own problems following the late-season firing of coach Tommy West — tried to play spoiler. The team presented their outgoing coach with a letterman's jacket with everyone's signature. Curtis Steele, the team's star senior, gave his coach 232 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Steele's final score handed the Tigers a 30-23 lead with 4:04 remaining in regulation. The announced crowd of 19,552 was silent, perhaps preparing for another agonizing late-game loss.

But G.J. Kinne wasn't going to be the first TU quarterback since 2002 to let Senior Day end with a defeat.

"We wanted to win this one for the seniors," Kinne said. "That's what I told them on that last drive. We're not going to let them lose on Senior Day."

Kinne opened with a 27-yard completion to Charles Clay and ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Trae Johnson with 32 seconds remaining in regulation.

Johnson said the team's confidence was high rolling into the final series. Losing wasn't an option.

"I can't even tell you (what would have happened with a loss)," Johnson said. "This has been a long season and not the way we wanted it to go."

Fitzpatrick's extra point knotted the game at 30 and set up overtime.

In Tulsa's inaugural C-USA game, the Hurricane beat the Tigers in overtime thanks to a critical fourth-down tackle on DeAngelo Williams.

Four years later, another spectacular defensive stop in OT set up the victory.

Defensive back James Lockett is known for his hard hits and quarterback sacks. When Memphis quarterback Arkelon Hall tried a sideline screen to Duke Calhoun, Lockett yanked the bobbled pass out of the air on the first play of overtime.

"I was going to go up for the hit," Lockett said. "Then I saw the tip and grabbed it with one hand."

"We get it to our best guy who is probably going to score on the play and it pops out of his hands," said West, whose team finished 2-10 overall, 1-7 in C-USA . "It's just been that kind of year."

Tulsa ran three plays to set the ball up in the middle of the field for Fitzpatrick, who had no fear while lining up for the 37-yard attempt

What did he tell Graham before taking the field?

"Coach, I've been waiting for this moment my whole life," Fitzpatrick recalled. "I went in extremely confident."

How did Graham respond?

"He looked like he was about to go to Disney World," Graham said, with a laugh. "I turned around and handed my headset to the coach and said, 'It's over, we're going to win.'"

Fitzpatrick's perfect kick set off a victory party that has been nearly two months in the making. Graham dedicated the win to the seniors.

"It's not about winning the game or finishing on a positive note, but just about those seniors," Graham said. "These seniors have been a special, special group. Not just on the field, but off the field.

"I'm not used to being emotional, but it was a very emotional day for me."

TU got a win! Now, Todd Graham, get a defensive coordinator. How about Tim DeRuyter (Air Force) or Tim Banks (Central Michigan) or Tracy Claeys (Northern Illinois)? Sound good?

Helmets were obscene. Pick a uniform and stick with it...forever.

I am glad they won on Senior Day...The Seniors Deserved It - BUT I am still not happy with a 5-7 season - TU has too much talent to end with a record like that. Well maybe next year will be better for the boy's not sure what kind of changes are gonna come about but we all agree some changes need to be made. GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR TU

I guess because they won we'll have to see those ugly uniforms again next year. The slogan is Wear blue, Go TU! but they never do. Oh, well, if it makes the players happy, go for it.

3-0 This year wearing blue helmets. 2-8 in other games. Not saying that the uniforms have any sort of effect on the outcome of the games. And for the record, I think the Yellow uniforms are a good look.

Another important win for this season's team.

Tu needs to get to the end of this season, and then the athletic director and Coach Graham are need to have a long,...... deep discussion about some of the assistant coaches.

........The team needs some changes. Too late this eason. Not to late to change for next year. The kids deserve better than what they're getting.....

The special teams still look just........lost.

maybe their ST coverage looks lost, but they have one heckuva punter and the kicker isn't too shabby either...

the defense is just too inconsistent, and the offense is too one dimensional. in the end, TU has too many playmakers to only win 5 games. every coach and every player needs to hit this off season hard and come back next year with a vengeance!

I agree with you TheFoundOgle but when they do come back next year with a vengeance, then what since the ball is being thrown to one person almost every play of the game. I just don't think the team is feeling like a team and that's what Graham lost most of all....all the team building skills he talks about and sends the boys to before and during the season.
And then they practice just as hard and then game day - NOTHING......I really dont think that's fair but it's just part of life I guess.

Way to go Todd Graham for making a team that was at least a 15 point underdog to have a chance to win and earn your 7 loss in a row. It is obvious to many that you have no capacity to coach the University of Tulsa and instead of focusing on proper elements of game planning and scouting you choose instead to apply change to the uniforms at a level of ridicule to demonstrate how screwed up your focus has been this past season.

Congrats, Tulsa for closing out the season the right way. Better luck next season.

Can we get past unis, please, and just talk football. The 2009 season is in the books and I am sure everyone on the team and those coming into the program are fully intent on righting this ship. Todd Graham it's your call to determine if major coaching changes are required. I don't think it's any secret where improvements must be made, which include the offensive line, defensive pressure, defensive play calling and challenging whoever is the QB to spread the ball around more often to all the receiving corps. The faithful within TU Nation can't wait for next season and are confident that the adjustments that need to be made will be made.

Agreed, TheFoundOgle,

very good punter, and kicker.

One of the most important positions in speacial tems is the "gunner". Those who are coached, to race downfield, evading blocks..... and get to the player who has caught either the punt, or kick-off.

A very key element to winning football, and virtually 100% dependent on excellent coaching of technique. I played this position many, many decades ago, as a fast sprinting defensive back.

TU is the very weakest is special teams in my opinion. Secondly,....... a one-dimensional offense, as you described.

TU needs some changes in the assistant coaching ranks. I hope the Athletic Director realizes this................
.........The head coach seems to be missing this weakness. He can't do it all. No head coach can.

TU played with alot of heart. As the school with the least enrollment in D1, they deserve props just for competing (And overachieving on a regular basis) So they had a bad season, I don't think we will see too many of those in the future.

TU should see if Malzahn wants to come back as the head coach.

The players need windshield wipers on their face masks to clean off all of Todd Graham's spit from him yelling at them all the entire season. I don't like coaches who scream at everyone of their own players right from the first kickoff to the last tick of the game.

Who gets motivated to play for a guy like that? None of the players ever try to spend more than a second longer than they have to around him.

I know guys like that who have little man syndrome.

Tulsa bloggers get real and focus on going to the game and supporting Tulsa's team through the good times and the losses.

Uniforms, Graham, should'a, could'a, would'a.

It should be all about blocking and tackling and the X's and O's and what happens on the field.

Who cares what they wear, show some innovation, and class.

Football is about emotion, yelling, screaming packaging, entertainment, fun!
