OSU Football Notebook: Footnote

Sharp

Oklahoma State punter Quinn Sharp became the leader in a national category Saturday. And that wasn't good news.

OSU's usually potent offense was so poor in a 27-0 Bedlam loss that Sharp punted 14 times — most by an FBS (Division I-A) player in any game this season. San Jose State's Phillip Zavala was the previous standard-bearer. He punted 12 times in a loss to USC this season.

Was Sharp's 14 punts a school record? Not by a long shot. OSU punted 22 times in a 1923 game against Kansas. The Cowboys hadn't punted more than eight times in any pre-Bedlam game this season, but Sharp punted nine times in the first half.

Targeted: Receiver Ryan Broyles has been OU's most reliable playmaker for much of the season. Stop Broyles and stop the Sooners? Broyles got loose for nine catches and 103 receiving yards.

"We knew where he was at all times," OSU defensive end Jermiah Price said. "We just couldn't get to the quarterback like we have been coached to and we didn't cover up their receivers like we wanted to today."

Down and distance: OSU was 0-of-14 on third-down conversions. The average distance the Cowboys faced in third-down situations was 8.57 yards.

"You are kind of in the Tigers' teeth when you go third-and-long against those guys," co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said.

Not so special: Mike Gundy said his team has won the special teams battle in many games. He was disappointed that the Cowboys lost the special teams battle against Oklahoma. Return yards (209 to 29) were heavy in the Sooners' favor. As a result, OSU's average starting field position was the 18. OU's average starting field position was its 45.

Ascending: Senior running back Keith Toston moved into ninth place on OSU's all-time rushing list. He has 2,684 career yards.

Taking blame: OU has a patchwork offensive line. OSU defensive coordinator Bill Young regrets he wasn't able to exploit it.

"A big part of that is I should have made some different calls obviously. The calls didn't work to the extent that we wanted them to," he said. "We didn't execute the way we wanted to and that falls right back on my shoulders."

Making history: Senior linebacker Andre Sexton became the first OSU player ever to start 50 career games. Sexton is the 11th-leading tackler in school history and is one shy of the top 10.

Blanked: OSU was shut out for the first time in 46 games. The Cowboys were last blanked in a 2005 game against Colorado

"Momentum is a funny thing and we didn't create any," Brewer said. "We had opportunities. Our defense created a lot of things for us, and we couldn't do anything with it. We'll go back and see why that wasn't happening, whether it was calls or whether it was coaching or whether it was dropped balls or probably a combination of all those things."

Suck it up. Go to a good bowl. And, play your hearts out. OSU has had a great season and we have no reason not to think that the football program will not get even better in the future. Houston we should have won and were the better team. Texas game should have been closer...too many interceptions. OU the offense just could not get cranked up and did not execute with the intensity needed. OSU just needs to keep the intensity and focus no matter the opponent.

I am interested that the coaches are saying that they did not have a very good game plan.Could they have not looked to the Texas Tech game and used some or part of their strategy they used to beat OU?Seems like a no-brainer to me.
