OU Football Notebook: Comet comes through

Matt Moreland, the walk-on from Bishop Kelley, may have had his best game as Oklahoma's kickoff specialist on Saturday against OSU. He certainly had his best single moment.

Moreland sent his first kick of the second half through a 20-mph wind, over the head of OSU's Perrish Cox and into the end zone for a touchback. Jogging off the field, Moreland was met by coach Bob Stoops, who raised both arms and gave his kicker a double high-five.

Most of the special-teams kudos after the game were given to Tress Way, the OU punter whose 59-yard average broke Michael Keeling's school record. But not all of them.

Said an appreciative Brent Venables, whose defense benefited from the high-placed kickoffs and the ensuing coverage: "Matt Moreland was huge today."

"Matt and I had a blast," Way said. "I remember one where Matt kind of had a shorter kick to the 15, and we had an offside. It backs us up and he kicks it even further."

OSU took Keenan Clayton's offside penalty, thinking it would get better field position than its own 16. That's as far as Cox got, before being hit by Demontre Hurst and Ronnell Lewis, on Moreland's original kick to the 15.

Moreland's second kick, however, reached the 9. And while Cox fared better on the return, he only made the 22 before being tackled by Sam Proctor.

Iron man: Jonathan Nelson made his second straight start in place of Proctor at safety and never came off the field. Nelson began subbing for Proctor on passing downs against Texas Oct. 17, but Proctor played against running formations.

That wasn't the case Saturday, and Nelson responded with three tackles and an interception, his third in as many games. His pick of Zac Robinson's underthrow over the middle, and 37-yard return to the OSU 13, set up DeMarco Murray's 12-yard touchdown run and OU's 20-0 lead.

"Jonathan covers a lot of ground back there," Stoops said. "It gave us some breathing room. It gave us momentum."

Reynolds wrap: Freshman wide receiver Jaz Reynolds replaced Dejuan Miller late in the first quarter and immediately awoke the Sooners' slumbering offense. On his third play, Reynolds beat cornerback Andrew McGee on a seam route for a 29-yard catch.

Reynolds never left the lineup after that and finished with three receptions for a career-high 59 yards. A breakout game, perhaps?

"I need to get a 100-yard game for someone to say I've arrived," he said. "I'd say I played pretty well, but I missed a couple blocks besides those catches. We take pride in our blocking, and I missed a couple that got Ryan (Broyles) hit on some of those bubbles. If I had gotten on those, I'd tell myself it was a breakout game."

If we had this play from special teams against BYU, Texas, and Miami we might have done better. Maybe it will carry over into next year? All we need now is a consistent FG kicker.

Don't sour on O'Hara yet. That kid is good.

I agree. O'Hara is going to end up being pretty good. I don't think he would have made that 52 yard kick anyway, the wind was pretty wicked Saturday.
