Investors seeking to bring a WNBA franchise to Tulsa have scheduled a press conference for 5 p.m. Tuesday to announce Nolan Richardson as the team’s head coach, pending their ability to secure a franchise, the Tulsa World learned Monday.

David Box of Cameron-Box Sports, one of the primary investors in the project, has had ongoing discussions with Richardson the last few weeks.

The two parties apparently reached an agreement late last week, but neither would confirm the announcement.

The public is invited to attend the Tuesday event, meet Richardson and place deposits on premium season tickets.

Richardson has coached at the junior college and college level, winning national championships at each.

He guided the University of Tulsa men’s basketball team to a NIT championship and three NCAA Tournament appearances in the 1980s and won an NCAA Tournament title in 1994 while at Arkansas.

This would be his first time to coach women’s basketball, although he has coached girls basketball camps in the past.

The 67-year-old Richardson is coming out of retirement to coach the team.

“I think it’s awesome,” said former WNBA player and coach Nancy Lieberman late last week when word started to surface about Richardson.

Lieberman is a women’s basketball analyst for ESPN.

Investors are continuing to work to secure a franchise and Richardson’s hiring is contingent upon approval of a franchise by the league.
