Is OU's Sam Bradford NFL bound?
Sooner QB might make big bucks as a pro, but one adviser says stay in school
Sooner sophomore quarterback Sam Bradford, shown throwing a pass to DeMarco Murray against Kansas State, has said the chances that he would leave OU early to play in the NFL are "very slim." mike simons/Tulsa World

WHEN SANFORD Wurmfeld stepped to the podium Saturday night in New York City, the Hunter College professor said the words Oklahoma fans dreamed of hearing for weeks.
"The winner of the 2008 Heisman Trophy," said Wurmfeld, a member of the Heisman Trust, "is Sam Bradford."
Four months from now, another gentleman could approach a podium in the Big Apple and utter the words that would turn next April 25 into an utter nightmare for Sooner supporters.
"With the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft," some predict commissioner Roger Goodell will say, "the Detroit Lions select quarterback Sam Bradford from the University of Oklahoma."
The OU faithful want Bradford to become the fourth Sooner to be the NFL's No. 1 overall pick, just like they were thrilled when he became the fifth player in school history to win college football's most prestigious individual award.
They just don't want to see it happen before 2010. And they'd prefer 2011.
After all, Bradford has only played 27 games in a Sooner uniform. What's the rush? Why push the redshirt sophomore out of the Memorial Stadium door when he has the potential to play 29 more games as a Sooner, starting with the Jan. 8 BCS national championship game?
Well, depending on who you believe, Bradford could risk losing a fortune if he opts to remain a big man on campus instead of becoming a big-time NFL multimillionaire.
Bradford is eligible for the 2009 draft because he redshirted his freshman year and has spent the required three seasons in college. Jake Long, the Michigan offensive lineman who was the 2008 No. 1 pick, signed a five-year contract worth $57.5 million, with $30 million guaranteed.
So many questions, so little time, is the problem Bradford faces as he attempts to decide what he wants to do with the rest of his football life after OU plays Florida for the national title at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Fla.
Should he go? Should he come back? Does he really have a shot at being the No. 1 pick? Or a top-five pick? Or even the first quarterback drafted?
Gil Brandt knows what he'd advise Bradford — just say no to the NFL and stay in school.
It's the same thing Brandt told Bradford last August, when OU coach Bob Stoops invited the former Dallas Cowboys executive to address the Sooners on several draft issues.
"I told Sam he should stay in school," Brandt said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "Believe me, I still think that (decision) is in his best interests.
"He's a hot prospect right now. He's a good player who will only get better with (college) experience."
A lot of agents are using scare tactics to urge underclassmen to declare for the draft. They predict the NFL Players Association will fight for a draft salary cap starting in 2010, thus allowing veterans to reap the rewards of their experience instead of those millions of bucks going to rookies.
"They've been saying that's going to happen since 1965," said Brandt, who was the Cowboys' vice president of player personnel from 1960-1988. "Do I think it's a reality? No."
Brandt does acknowledge that the depth of senior quarterbacks in the upcoming draft is shallow. He predicts former Sooner Rhett Bomar, who transferred to Sam Houston State after Stoops booted him off the team for breaking NCAA rules, could be the first senior quarterback drafted.
"It is definitely a less-than-spectacular senior class at quarterback," said Brandt, who now writes for
NFL.com
.
Most analysts will rank Georgia junior Matthew Stafford and Bradford as the top two prospects at the position if they come out early. Some NFL experts believe the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Stafford's frame is more NFL-ready than the 6-4, 220-pound Bradford.
Brandt and Archie Manning, the father of NFL quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning, met with Stafford's family and advised him to play his senior season for the Bulldogs. Peyton Manning played four seasons at Tennessee, while his younger brother was a fifth-year senior when he completed his career at Mississippi.
"If you study the hits and misses in the draft," Brandt said of quarterbacks, "the ones that seem to do the best are the four- and five-year guys. And the ones who do the least are the ones who come out early and don't have enough experience playing the game."
Brandt said Stoops is one of many college coaches who has him address his team each season about the draft and life as a professional.
"Coach Stoops really tries to work for what is in the best interest of his players," Brandt said. "He's done all kinds of research. He knows more about it than most agents."
Bradford has said he will submit a request this week for the NFL's official assessment of his draft status. He will gather that paperwork and huddle with his parents, Stoops and quarterback coach Josh Heupel to help him make an educated decision by the NFL's Jan. 15 deadline.
While on the awards circuit last week, Bradford told the Tulsa World that the chances he'll leave OU after the national championship are "very slim."
OU fans will hold their collective breath and hope Bradford steps to a podium in Norman next month and says these words: "The chances of me leaving OU early are slim and none. And slim just left town."

No way he should go now. He'll have a little less to work with next year which in turn will only help him develop even more. The NFL and the money are going nowhere, if Sam continues to do what he's doing, he'll get his, no question. I know the greedy out there are saying go go, but fortunately Sam appears to have a knack for making the right decision.

I think he should stay in school, and finish his degree. And that is what I think he'll do.

I guess we'll just have to see how this supposedly smart business major sizes up his life options. If it were me, I'd milk the Indian connection now, and the NFL later.

Sam has a chance to make history at OU if he stays another year. His NFL stock will only go up and he'll only get better and bigger if he finishes and gets his degree. Yes, the lure of the huge dollars is immense, but the statistics around those men that enter the draft early speak volumes.
Hope he listens to Heupel, his Dad, and his heart! Stay home in Norman, Sam! Your degree will be priceless, as will the example you'll be setting for all the kids that look up to you. Your NFL payday is going to be humongous anyway, regardless.

Dear Sam,
The Sooner Nation is extremely proud of you and it would be selfish of us to talk you into staying for your junior and senior years. I do think the pie in the sky will still be there for you whenever you chose to take a bite.
I will say that there are merits to staying in school, maturing as an adult, and developing your skill level even more so than it already is.
Whatever you decide and whenever you choose to do it, please remember your humble beginnings and try to remain so. I feel it is your greatest quality. You do us proud!!! Boomer Sooner

The signing bonus money is only important IF he fails as a pro quarterback. Sam has all the tools and will get the money just like the Mannings. He needs at least another year just to get stronger. Plus, he has to come back to beat texas next year!

How many of you would continue your current life path if there was an option to change 'employers' and get a 40 million dollar raise and keep doing a job you really like, guaranteed?? Get real people.

I'd hate to see Sam drafted by the Detroit Lions - another outstanding OU/OSU player wallowing in futility with the Lions franchise (Billy Sims and Barry Sanders). Stay another year Sam, finish your degree and hope that some other team gets the first pick next year!

If he can go to the NFL this year, he better go. As bad as the economy is, you would have to be a fool not to go and get millions of dollars. Let's turn all of this around and say this is your kid, would you really be that stupid and say hey let's turn down a million dollars. When that player sign a contract, just by signing, he will make more than their parents or just the average Joe will make in a life time. To Bradford, NFL will stand for Not For Long, so yes go and get the big money. He will always be able to finsh his degree. You know most people that say's stay in school is the same people that make excuses for other people that quit school, (school is not for everyone). What's the difference in this case, oh money. And the people that is saying for Bradford to come back, they are OU fans. Well guess what OU fans, now you get a small feeling of what these other programs have to go through. Miami Hurricanes for a couple years in a row had to lose 12 players to the draft in one year and 14 the next year, not because of seniors, but because of talent. This is what happens to the LSU's, Florida's, Florida State's, USC's, Ohio State's etc. on a yearly basis. It's almost like they are juco teams, but they are seeing their players for 1 more extra year.

I think he should stay in school, give up $30mm guaranteed, and enjoy his days at OU behind a horrible offensive line next year with one returning starter. It will get him used to running for his life the next several years in Detroit. Face it gooners, if you don't win this year, your out of contention for at least 3 years.

Sam Bradford has a reported 3.95 grade point average as a junior in Finance and wants to be a corporate attorney. He sounds like an intelligent young man who's also very grounded. Smart money will have him remaining at OU for at least another year, so he can finish his degree and add to his growing awards, which will boost his position in the 2010 draft.

I am confident that Sam will make the choice that suits him the best.Only he can make the decision that suits him, no matter what the rest of us say. So I say good luck to him on his selection the choice is on his shoulders.

I predict he will stay and further his college education and become the second Heisman winner to win the award two times.
Maybe that prediction is wishful thinking, but I really believe he was raised with more than the thought that he would one day make millions.
Regardless of when he leaves, he will be wealthy and he certainly did not invision all of this success when he signed with OU. If Bohmar were still there, he would just now be getting his chance.

Newshound, he can get insurance now to take care of a possible injury if he stays. He can also stay and continue on with his degree program, with his 3.9 GPA in finance and make even more money in another career.....one that he will want regardless of when he leaves.
I think those of us that say he "would be foolish to stay" are thinking what WE would do and NOT what SAM CAN DO.

A little less to work with? He is losing his entire offensive line. The same O-Line that gives him 12 seconds to throw the ball. He can come back and finish his degree during the off season and online--it's what Jammal Brown did. He's not coming back. You're deluding yourselves.

Our cupboard isn't going to be as bare as most think next year. We have a very deep OL, so the drop off won't be as much as most expect. We also have some nice playmaking receivers and a defense that will be much improved. Like it or not, we will most definitely be in contention next year. Texas may be the favorite to win the Big 12 next year, but they will have to get by us first, and we owe them!

It could depend on the O-line OU will have next year. The line looks like it will be good, so he may be protected well. If he is drafted by the Detroit Lions, he will be in a lot of trouble.
The following season may bring the same situation, but who knows.
