OU linebacker Lewis: He's "tired of people dogging on our defense"

Oklahoma football players watch the news and they read the papers. And linebacker Travis Lewis says the Sooners are tired of what they’re hearing and reading about their defense.

“We’ve got a lot of guys going out there with chips on their shoulders,” Lewis said of what he, and teammates, perceive as media criticism of OU’s defense. “We do listen to the media. We do read some of the articles. It's great to see that everybody expects us to just go out there and two offenses show up and one defense (Florida's) shows up.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think this is the best stage we can play on to go out there and prove to the nation that Oklahoma does have a defense. And we're a big part of why we’re here right now.”

Oklahoma plays Florida in the BCS National Championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday on Fox (KOKI 5/23). OU brings a record-setting offense that leads the country in scoring, at 54 points per game. But on the other side of the ball, OU ranks 58th (out of 119 schools) in scoring defense. OU ranks 63rd in total defense.

The Sooners and Gators attended media day this morning, and Lewis said, “I love the fact that we're the underdog. I love the fact that people expect us to lay down to these guys and not play any defense.”

Lewis leads OU’s defense with 137 tackles, a school record for a freshman. He said OU’s defense made big plays when it counted this season.

“Look at the Big 12 championship,” Lewis said. “Look at the Texas Tech game. We would like to think we're a big-play defense. There's nothing better than to go out and prove all these guys wrong, to win a national championship and say, 'Look at this guys.'"

Lewis said he believed that part of the reason Sooner sophomore Dominique Franks was outspoken Sunday when he was asked about Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was frustration. Franks, a defensive back, said Tebow would probably be the fourth-best quarterback in the Big 12. Franks declined interview requests today.

“You get tired of people dogging on our defense like everybody is,” Lewis said. “We’re gonna show up. I guarantee you that. We would like to think that they’re going to score zero. We do have the defense, and we’re going out to prove it.”

Steven I hope you're right, but I'm a little more conservative with a 42-21 OU win.
