'Elite' defensive end picks OSU over Sooners, Gators

By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

Last week, Chase Rome toured the facilities of the 2008 national champion Florida Gators.

A junior defensive lineman at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Mo., Rome had been offered a scholarship not only by the Gators, but by Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State. He says his high school is "within walking distance" of Mizzou's Faurot Field.

But on Monday, when the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Rome announced his commitment, he pledged to sign with Oklahoma State.

Rome plans to graduate in December and enroll at OSU for the 2010 spring semester.

"At Oklahoma State, I found a program that was a good fit," said Rome, who has his own Web site, chaserome.com. "(New Cowboy defensive coordinator) Bill Young was a big factor with me going there."

Rome is ranked by Scout.com as the nation's No. 27 defensive end prospect but is expected to play a tackle position in college.

"It has been very difficult for OSU to get the elite interior defensive recruits, so this is a huge commitment," a source close to the Cowboy program said. "(Rome) can have an impact at Oklahoma State like Tommie Harris and Gerald McCoy have had at OU."

Rome's father, Wade Rome, played high school football with OSU's Joe DeForest at Titusville, Fla. DeForest is OSU's associate head coach, special-teams coordinator and safeties coach.

Five players — including Sand Springs quarterback Johnny Deaton — have committed to OSU for the 2010 recruiting class. Verbal commitments are non-binding. Recruits may sign national letters of intent in February.

Great, but. Every year, every school seems to have its best recruiting class of all time . . . which cannot possibly be the case, can it?

W.O.W., nice. Bill Young already earned his salary with this signing, hah hah. Just kidding, Coach, but keep up the good work. Chase, you'll love the whole Ok State atmosphere.

Righton, by your comment you admit that other schools, including OU, offered to pay Chase to go to school there. Good job!

As usual, righton is not right on. What a clown. He's still stewing from his OU Gooners loss in the tourney and their annual big choke in football apparently. OOOOOOO....SSSSSSS.....UUUUUUU COWBOYS!!!!!!

I had the same initial thought 'Strangelove'. I suppose it will become a more common trend with kids competely so hard for a very limited number of scholarships. It is actually a pretty practical way one can stand out from the rest. Instead of sending in a tape of yourself to sit in a box filled with video of other kids, send a web link for the coach to check out that includes everything...not just a couple seconds of highlights. When you look at it that way, it is actually pretty smart.

Nice going Pokes. Great name too, "Chase", perfect for a defensive end.

baro,

Had your post resembled something written in English I may have possibly been able to understand it. Since it is not, and I can't, I'll just take it as a congratulations to Oklahoma State.

Your comments certainly have been civil and usually entertaining. You can consider yourself exempt from any remarks of mine from this point forward. I know, I know... you'll sleep better tonight knowing that.

Perhaps the kids GPA had more to do with him headed to Stillwater, than Norman or Gainsville.

You need to go back and pass elementary school before you're ready to discuss matters pertaining to universities.

baro,

The answer to your question is in the article. The kids father played ball with an OSU coach and probably trusts that the school will do right by his son. Most son's want to please their father. T.Boone isn't a booster with a car lot that over pays athletes to work--he buys world class facilities that players like to play in. Are you getting all of this or would you like me to draw you a picture?

TK1,

I'd like you to draw baro a picture. We can give him some crayons, and maybe he'll be out of the way for a couple of days.

Poor Baro, the hampster in his head has fallen off the wheel and died. I know this isn't really fair and honestly Baro, you never stood a chance in this argument. You set yourself up for failure with your less-than-remedial grammar attempts and your hypocritical accusations.

If this were a Harlem Globe Trotters game you would be the lowly Generals. Sure, you try to put on a good show but in the end, the players dribble circles around you while everyone watching laughs at your expense.

Have yourself a good cry, tell yourself you did your best and sleep tight, cupcake.
