Humble Tisdale was Sooners' best

Among those who played with or against Wayman Tisdale, there seems to be a unanimous opinion that he was the best player in University of Oklahoma basketball history.

Tisdale, typically modest and generous, tried to push that distinction to another Sooner, Blake Griffin, who wore Tisdale's No. 23 while becoming the 2008-09 national player of the year.

Tisdale's college career ended 24 years ago, but the big lefty remains OU's career leader in scoring (25.6-point average) and rebounds. But when asked about Griffin in April, Tisdale said, "Blake is better in a lot of ways."

Numbers alone do not define a player's value, but consider this:

During his two Sooner seasons, Griffin had six 30-point performances.

During his three Sooner seasons, Tisdale reached the 30-point mark on 32 occasions.

He erupted for a school-record 61 points against Texas-Antonio. He dropped 55 on Southwestern (Texas) and 51 on Abilene Christian. But Tisdale wasn't prolific only against the cupcakes. He scored at least 30 points in 13 Big Eight games. He had 39 against Georgia Tech, 34 against Illinois and 33 against Syracuse.

His trademark shot was a turnaround jumper, and even the biggest and best low-post defenders were overmatched by Tisdale's quickness.
