Sooners gain one but lose another
Embattled Chaisson joins team and Justin Johnson transfers.

BOB SPEAKS
Bob Stoops: The Oklahoma head coach said the Sooners will honor a scholarship offered to Justin Chaisson, and confirmed that Justin Johnson intends to transfer.

Oklahoma has officially gained the services of high school defensive end Justin Chaisson, while sophomore running back Justin Johnson has elected to transfer.

Chaisson last month had multiple felony charges — including coercion with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon — pleaded down to gross misdemeanors.

On Thursday, OU released a statement that read, in part, "all allegations of the use of any weapon have been dismissed and are not the basis of any charge against or plea by him."

Chaisson was on the team's official roster as of Thursday. He was originally charged with four felonies stemming from an incident with his former girlfriend, during which she told police that he forced her into a car, held a screwdriver to her neck and threatened to kill her.

Chaisson's attorney, Michael Cristalli, explained after his successful plea agreement on May 5 that Chaisson's future at OU had hinged on pleading the felonies to misdemeanors. He was sentenced to three years probation and 120 hours community service and must attend domestic violence counseling.

The statement by OU confirms the program's intention to honor its scholarship offer to Chaisson.

"We have thoroughly reviewed the facts and disposition of any and all allegations against Justin as determined by the independent assessment of the district attorney's office and the court system," reads the statement, issued from the athletic media relations department through coach Bob Stoops. "Based on their investigation of the facts, all allegations of the use of any weapon have been dismissed and are not the basis of any charge against or plea by him. Our decision is appropriately based on the independent determination and action of the district attorney's office and the court system.

"We take these matters of conduct very seriously. Justin fully understands our expectations and his responsibilities of exemplary behavior and professional counseling. He knows the consequences if he does not meet those requirements."

After days of speculation and Internet rumors about Johnson leaving, Stoops confirmed to reporters during the Sooner Caravan in Dallas that Johnson was gone.

"Right now we anticipate him transferring, which is fine," Stoops said. "We'll give him a full release and wish him the best. We wish him the best. Certain guys seek certain things and he feels that's best for him. We want it for him as well."

Johnson was a fourth-string fill-in behind DeMarco Murray, Chris Brown and Mossis Madu last season, rushing for 24 yards on 14 carries. With Madu's move to receiver this season, Johnson was again expected to be behind Murray, Brown and redshirt freshman Jermie Calhoun.

Johnson was ranked the No. 2 high school running back in the nation by Scout.com at Gilmer (Texas) High School and was a U.S. Army All-American. He reportedly told an Austin radio station he intends to transfer to Division II Abilene Christian.

Chaisson sounds like a real winner. OU fans should be extremely proud that they have a guy like this on their team.

Man I had always heard really good things about Justin Johnson, it would have been nice to see him out there in '11.

Chaisson has been given a second chance and it is entirely up to him to either make or blow the opportunity. Coach Bob will cut this guy in a heartbeat if he goes the wrong way.
Johnson probably thought he wasn't going to get any playing time.......too bad....his decision was a poor one.

I believe you are correct Graybeard. If this kid makes another "mistake" (for lack of a better word), there's no doubt Coach Stoops will show him the door.

Kid is incredibly young and deserves a 2nd chance just like the rest of us to redeem himself. Obviously any type of transgression and he'll end up at Nevada State or somewhere else real quick(reference Josh Jarboe). As far as Johnson, too bad, wish him the best. Could see it coming though, we are so deep at RB...with more coming in. Terrible problem to have.

It' a shame Chaisson didn't go ahead and transfer to osucku. That way he'd already have one foot in the penal system.

Geez, here we go again i heard this same story last year about another recruit of OU's. What's the deal? All the criminals are really knocking down the doors to get in.....literally. If Crybaby Stoops was so hard nosed, and stern with his decisions about these kind of players/people the why would he let him slide onto the team? Was the thought of not being able to save face and losing two guys really be that bad if your only other choice was to let a kid like this onto your squad? Nice coaching. It won't matter anyway in the end. Same year ending disease will plague the Gooners again........you can set your watch to it sports fans. "So deep at running back"?, ya we'll see. Don't forget who led the big twelve in rushing last year... that'd be OSU's Kendall "Spud" Hunter who's already garnering preseason recognition around the country. What a great year this will be for the POKES. Eight home games and a beautiful new stadium. Great year in store for the POKES, truly wish i could say the same for the Gooners.

WWJD,

This KID already has his both feet fully planted in the penal system. I agree with you in that both schools have had some bad seeds. But this kid has MULTIPLE FELONY counts, the season hasn't even begun, and your joke of a coach STILL lets him on!!!!!!! Just shows you how desperate OU is. That's my point.

There are QUALITY individuals out there who play football, so why take a chance on "borderline" criminals such as this guy....I wrote borderline but "coercion with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon" on a woman seems way beyond borderline to me....

Sure people deserve second chances in life, but free education, free high quality room & board, adoration by mindless fanatics and access to alchohol driven college parties appears to be a bit too much for me....

Let him do this at another school not the University of Oklahoma....

Problem is: how many OU coeds are going to be hurt (or worse) before Stoops "shows him the door".

Forgetting to pay a parking ticket, driving without a seatbelt, etc. are all minor infractions that deserve to be counted as "he's a kid" infractions. But Justin Chaisson is abusive to women. Sure, he pled down to misdemeanor charges, but he acts remain unchanged.

Giving a guy like this scholarship money to play ball is one of the many reasons OU has such a shabby reputation.

I am a lifelong sooner fan and this story won't change that. However, I am disappointed with this kid being on the team. Football players, in general, are dominant type A men. And the good ones have a mean streak a mile wide when they are on the football field, but learn how to control that rage when off the field. Tommie Harris is a great example of this. But a young man such as Chaisson that takes his rage out on a young lady has deep seeded issues with anger. I don't know if there is enough professional help in the world to even begin solving his problems given the distractions he will face in football, college life, and being a student at the same time. We don't need any one player so badly that we should risk such convtraversy.
Who knows, though. Coach was right with Dusty Devorechek and his ability to get his act together. Hopefully, he is right here too.

GOP,
That's ok, i just picked myself up after ROFLMAO over this article!!!!! Wake up Chokelahoma booster, and pull your head out. OSU didn't let his looser on their team....... OU DID!!!! You have no b**ch, so you resort to correcting a spelling error. LOL!

OSU has a good chance at having a decent record this year with all those home games in that beautiful new stadium.
Let's see if the Cowchokes can beat the Big Boys: OU and Texas. OSU has yet to win a Big 12 Championship in football, much less play for a National Title.

Oh, and seems like I recall a fella that was given a second chance at OSU recently.....Prentiss Elliot......he turned out well, didn't he? Stoops isn't the only coach to give a kid a second chance....some turn it around, some don't.

Ottley,

Saying that "OSU didn't let his looser on their team," while showing incredibly poor spelling, assumes that OSU could have had this kid in the first place. Not so, my spelling-challenged friend, not so.

Graybeard,
As i recall he was booted off OSU's squad after he messed up. Am i wrong? Way different than being let on the team after you've commit the crimes don't you think? Spare me. However, that was awhile ago....but the criminals keep rolling in OU's doors don't they. Letting a kid onto the team after he fouls up IS different than kicking one off after the fact. Trying to fill roster spots is what it equates to and that's pitiful. Stay tuned. A SOONER IS A THIEF but i don't have to tell you that Moses.

Ottley,
I gotta admit both schools do have their share of trouble players. But you gotta wonder if the talent pool is running lay for descent kids. You can look all across the nation and see nothing but sports figures in trouble. I think winning has gotten too important.

Ottley,

The use of the word "looser" in the context of that sentence was absolutely wrong. That implies that the kid is a whore, or a prostitute. So I can infer that you are either too stupid to know the difference between 'looser' and 'loser' or you just made a 'typo'. BUT you used up your one 'typo' when you said 'his' instead of 'this'. See, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt once, but when you proved your ignorance by screwing up a second time, you deserved to be called out on it.
Also, your spelling wasn't the whole issue in my previous post. If you could comprehend what I was saying, you would understand that OSU wouldn't have had a chance to sign this kid in the first place. So when you said that OSU didn't let "..his looser.." in, you were being intellectually dishonest in implying that Chaisson would consider going to OSU in the first place.
Finally, as far as the kid being welcome at OU, I agree with you. It shows a lack of judgement on Stoops' part in my opinion. I think it relays a message that we don't care how bad of a person someone is, if they can play football they are good enough for OU. I wish Stoops would have politely rescinded the kid's scholarship.

You see it everytime a player has conflict, the media goes wild. Something sensational to grab a headline. And if you think these darlings of the reporting world are saints and above fabrication, well wake up dummy. Then the howling begins by the opposition, who only read what is online or in print. Wake up, these reporters get paid for juicy stories that make the front page. NO One Knows the whole truth, but Chaisson, the young lady, and the police. Stoops gave Jarboe a 2nd chance and he lasted..........about that long. Stoops again did his best to obtain all the facts, not just the media version. Chaisson will be watched very closely, one little screwup and he's gone too. YOu just can't stand back and run your jaw about how awful the kid is without knowing the facts and giving him another chance. It has nothing to do with his talent which is considerable.

Many people believe in second chances, which I also do, but this youngster faced some pretty serious charges and he should be closely watched. UO's reputation is not the shinest in football and this decision might tarnish it more in the eyes of football recruits. Lets hope he doesn't screw up.
