Suns select Taylor Griffin in second round

Taylor became the second Griffin to come up big on NBA Draft night late Thursday when the Phoenix Suns made him their second-round pick, No. 48 overall.

It’s good news for Griffin, who averaged 9.6 points to help Oklahoma win 30 games and reach the Elite Eight last year. He was weighing options including playing overseas prior to the draft, and had even been picked No. 1 overall in the Harlem Globetrotters’ player draft earlier this week.

Now, the 6-7 forward will report to the Suns’ camp and try to make a roster that includes several frontcourt players, but aside from Amare Stoudemmire, no proven stars.

He’ll report to the Suns’ camp and compete for a roster spot with a bevy of forwards including Earl Clark of Louisville, the Suns’ first round pick.

“Phoenix was actually a favorite team of mine growing up, so that’s kind of cool,” the older Griffin brother said. “I loved watching them play when I was in high school.

“I think I can fit in well there. I’m not sure what they want to do with me. I’ll have a chance to show them what I can do on their summer league team. They’ve also talked about possibly sending me overseas. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”
