Jenks senior Lake commits to Sooners

Jarrett Lake already had a scholarship offer from the University of Oklahoma. So on Monday, during a trip to Norman to watch former Jenks High School teammate Gabe Lynn's summer workouts, Lake decided to make it official and verbally commit to playing for the Sooners in 2010.

"We went up to see Gabe practice and work out, kind of get a feel for how the summer workouts go," said Lynn's father, Tyrone Lynn. "He knew he wanted to go there anyway and that just really reinforced it."

Gabe Lynn will be a freshman cornerback for the Sooners this season. Lake transferred to Jenks last year after moving in from Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy. Tyrone Lynn said Lake at first lived with an aunt, but has since moved in with the Lynn family.

"She travels quite a bit, and he and Gabe became close friends," Tyrone Lynn said. "In between her travels, it just kind of worked out that he stayed here a lot. He's like another son. He's got a room and he's part of the family."

At OU, Lake is projected to be a defensive back or linebacker. At Jenks, he'll play wide receiver this fall. Rivals.com ranks Lake as the state's 12th-best prep prospect.

"The greatest thing about Jarrett is his upside," Jenks coach Allan Trimble said. "We've had him just for a year and a half and he has grown and gotten so much faster and better. He's still learning how to play. They got them a tremendous athlete. He ran track and ran (100 meters) in the 10.6s. You're talking a kid who's 6-2, 195 pounds, and will be at 215 when he gets to OU. He's a tremendous football player. Good versatility."

Lake also had offers from Arkansas, Wyoming and Tulsa. He also was recruited by Oklahoma State and North Carolina. He attended OU's football camp last month and over the weekend participated in a passing tournament in Springdale, Ark.

"He said if he was offered by OU, he was gonna take it," Trimble said.

Lake is OU's 16th verbal of the '10 class. Verbal commitments are nonbinding until prospects sign a letter of intent next February.

There is still a ton of time before signing day in Feb, but this class is shaping up pretty nicely. Another good haul for OU. I think it would be awesome if Gabe Lynn became a starting corner opposite Dom. Franks. Pretty impressive Jenks and Union tandem.

Lynn will probably dawn a redshirt this season, and be groomed for the future. As far as this class, the thing it says to me is that our coaching staff has been putting in some work!
