Pokes look to bench for replacement

This story misspelled the name of Oklahoma State basketball player Malcoln Kirkland.
STILLWATER — In honor of final exams week at Oklahoma State, here's a multiple choice question for basketball coach Travis Ford:
Now that starting post player Ibrahima Thomas and the Cowboys have officially parted company, who will plug the hole in the middle?
A. Senior forward Anthony Brown.
B. Freshman center Teeng Akol.
C. Sophomore forward Malcoln Kirland.
D. Sophomore forward Marshall Moses.
The answer? All of the above.
"It's going to be by committee," Ford said before a Tuesday practice at Gallagher-Iba Arena. "Whoever is playing well will get to play."
Ford indicated his team has experience playing without Thomas because the 6-foot-11 sophomore was frequently in foul trouble. In the Cowboys' first seven games, Thomas fouled out twice and picked up four fouls three times.
OSU starts four guards. As the team proceeds forward minus Thomas, Ford said he could go with a smaller lineup and utilize Obi Muonelo and James Anderson at the four and five spots "if we needed to do that."
Brown said the Cowboys will be fine. He started in Thomas' place in a loss to Washington last week and, listed at 6-6, was OSU's tallest starter. Brown told reporters he thinks he is 6-8. Regardless, he vowed to play hard and do whatever he can to help the team.
But is Brown so outsized at the five spot that OSU will be at a disadvantage?
"That's not going to be a problem," Brown said.
"I can deal with the big guys in the post."
Brown said a lack of size will be more of an issue on defense than on offense.
OSU could get immediately taller by employing Akol, who is 6-11, but he didn't start practicing until last week, when he was finally declared eligible by the NCAA. Ford said Akol is "a long way away" from being game-ready.
"These other guys are so far ahead of him, I don't know if he will actually catch them this year," Ford said.
Ford said Akol is behind in conditioning and doesn't know any plays.
"From what I have seen in the last week, I am really excited about him," Ford said. "He just hasn't gone against competition in so long he is still just adjusting."
Akol accompanied OSU to Seattle last week, but did not play. Ford said he did not consider using Akol against Washington. But Ford would like to get Akol on the court Sunday, when OSU plays a road game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Akol indicated Tuesday he will be closer to game shape in about a week. Asked whether he wants to share the burden of replacing Thomas, he said, "Definitely. I was surprised. I didn't know he was going to leave. I need to step my game up and be responsible."

Travis Ford is not doing well, this year we may not even see the NIT

I was one of the biggest proponents of keeping Sean; however, I do think Coach Ford is doing just as well as Sean has in the past. There have been two games where I was really disappointed (mostly just with Washington). The other games showed promise and seemed as if all we needed was at least a little bit of consistent post play. The season isn't falling apart yet. He's doing a decent job so far.
Taking over in a situation like Travis Ford did, is extremely difficult. Most of the players loved Sean (Marshall Moses excluded) and almost all of the fans love the Sutton family.
Lastly, he's only been on the job for about 8 months, and the first few were spent mostly recruiting as it was recruiting season. His first two years, unlike Sean's, need to be almost judgment free and if he can't produce results by his third year, let's have this conversation again.

We may not see the NIT this year given what Ford has to work with and that's at the feet of the Sutton's. Coaching under the Sutton's went steadly down hill for the last few years.

Get a clue "Snoop". Coach Ford is working with leftover Sutton kids. From everything I read in the off-season, he came in and locked up some key recruits. He is putting together the best team he can given the type of players he has in hand. So far I've liked all that I've read about Ford and what he is doing despite being strongly against the handling of Sutton's dismissal.
He's not even out of non-conf schedule in 1st year. You're just looking for reasons to hate. We may not make the NIT but that's still on Sutton in my eyes. Next year it's all Ford.

Good comment, Dave in Houston. He's taken over this program and done a heck of a job with what he has to work with. And not once has he complained about anything. If people are really Pokes fan, give the guy a chance. Don't crucify him unless he deserves it.

The season has just started. Give Ford a break, wait until the end of the season to start slamming him. I don't look for much out of this season. I was a Sutton fan, but what has been done has been done. I will support Ford and give him time to prove or disprove his ability to lead the program. Ford really didn't have much to work with when he showed up.

I understand what everyone is saying about Ford needing more time but honestly, I never liked his style from the beginning. We already shot way too many 3's as it was in the past two years and now it seems like the guys have a green light no matter what the situation is. This leads to worse shot selection, which leads to fast breaks for the opposing team, which leads to more fouls called on us, etc. This may have worked at UMass but we have all seen what happened the last two years when all we did was jack up 3 after 3. I hope the results change but I don't see it happening under this style.
