SAN DIEGO — Dez Bryant’s knee injury, Zac Robinson’s shoulder injury, a surprising inability to rush the football and defensive breakdowns doomed Oklahoma State to a 42-31 Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon.
After leading 17-7 at halftime, the 13th-ranked Cowboys were crushed by the Ducks’ ground attack. Oregon, 10-3 and ranked 15th nationally, rushed for 307 yards and averaged 7.7 yards per attempt.
Duck quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, voted the game’s offensive MVP, rushed for 106 yards and three third-quarter touchdowns. Running backs Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount gashed the Cowboy defense for a combined total of 193 rushing yards, with Johnson scoring on a 76-yard, first-quarter dash and Blount on a 29-yarder in the fourth period.
After halftime, Oregon rushed for 172 yards. OSU ran for 49.
”I think it’s a very simple explanation,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “Oregon was a much more physical football team in the second half.”
OSU was bidding for its first 10-win season since 1988, when the Gundy-quarterbacked Cowboys closed that season with a Holiday Bowl triumph over Wyoming.
The 2008 Cowboys, having surged to a 7-0 start and a No. 7 national ranking in October, were beaten in four of their final six games to finish at 9-4.
The OSU offense had a hot first period against Oregon, getting points on its first three possessions, but Bryant — OSU’s All-American sophomore wide receiver — sustained a left-knee injury during the second period. He closed with 13 catches for 167 yards and one touchdown, but clearly was hobbled during the second half.
At one point in the game, Robinson was 15-of-21 passing for 180 yards. But he sustained what Gundy described as a shoulder separation during the second period, and Robinson’s accuracy was affected during the second half. He finished 27-of-50 for 329 yards, with two interceptions.
Robinson was not immediately available for comment. OSU officials explained that he was getting treatment on the shoulder. Gundy did not speculate on the severity of Bryant’s injury. ”The physical nature of the game affected (Bryant). He got hurt a little bit,” Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. “Their quarterback (Robinson), I don’t think he was the same quarterback (after the shoulder injury). He could not shake my hand at the end of the game. He gave me his left hand when I went to shake his hand, so, obviously, he had gotten hit a little bit. That’s part of the game of football.”
With 383 yards of total offense, Robinson did break Gundy’s school record for career total offense. With one remaining season of eligibility, Robinson’s total stands at 7,786 yards.
Most glaring was OSU’s failure to effectively run the football. The Cowboys entered with an average of 256.0 yards per game, but on Tuesday mustered only 119 (3.2 per attempt). Kendall Hunter, who rushed for 1,518 yards during the regular season, ran 13 times for 37 yards against Oregon.
”We just weren’t effective enough running the football,” Gundy said. “Ultimately, (the Ducks) were more physical than we were.”
Oregon had a 565-469 advantage in total yards. The Cowboys were only 4-of-15 on third-down conversions.
OSU took a 17-7 lead to the halftime locker room, but its momentum dissolved on the opening kickoff of the second half. Oregon’s Walter Thurmond III broke a 91-yard return to the Cowboy 3-yard line, and Masoli scored on a 1-yard plunge.
A shootout then developed as there were five lead changes. The Ducks led 35-31 when the OSU defense stuffed Oregon on a goal-line stand, but the Cowboys did not capitalize and were forced to punt.
Oregon answered with Blount’s 29-yard, tackle-breaking touchdown run with 3:01 left to play, giving the Ducks an insurmountable cushion of 11 points. ”We are not making excuses for anyone who had an injury,” Gundy said. “Oregon had a good team. It came down to us not being able to run the ball.”

Even though few pokie state fans root for the Sooners and many root against them, I was rooting for pokie state. Good showing though.

Once again, OSU underwhelms and underperforms. Senior all-world tight end Pettigrew went the ENTIRE season WITHOUT a single TD...why? Because the coaching staff doesn't have a clue on how to use the best talent ever fielded by Halloween U. Gumby needs to become a man, and hand the reins over to a real offensive coordinator. It has been 20 years since the pokes have had a 10 win season...20 freak’n years! OSU is in the fifteenth year of their five year rebuilding plan. Same song (High Hopes), twentieth verse! Poooooor aggies…

I don't think these were Pac 10 officials. Officiating crews in bowl games come from a conference not playing in the game.

Hmmm...establish a lead. Lose a lead. Pattern vaguely familiar. Rumor: Mr. Pickens canceled flight, dispatched team in wind-powered Studebaker.
Makes you wonder if state teams intend to turn bowl season into re-enactment of the Dust Bowl.

Plumb bob - you need to add another o to bob. We had a great game until a HARD hit on our QB - not a bad hit, just one of those ouch moments. He never played the same after that and I can't say I blame him. Throwing into the grass and missfires all over the place. It was a 13th ranked team and a 15th ranked team, hardly an embarrassment. Only a stuck up OU fan like Gene would think so. Better fortune to OU.

I was in San Diego the last time OSU played the Holiday Bowl. Great fun! I don't even remember if they won or not.

OSU, stick to what you do best: basketball!
Their football team is better than their basketball team. Maybe wrestling is what they do best.

OK there were at least three late hits not called (the ESPN announcers even pointed them out)
but that's beside the point the defense takles and OSU wins by two touch downs.... I believe they missed defensive coach alot more then they let on.... GO POKES young team that will be even better next year!!

What do you do when your QB just gets the crap knocked out of him, call two consecutive pass plays. Brilliant Gundy! What do you do when your star WR is injured and you have a under-used 1st round NFL TE ready and waiting...keep throwing to the hurt WR. Brilliant Gundy!! What do you do when your QB is still showing signs of injury from that previous hit and us unable to throw more than 10yrs...run deep pass routes over and over. Brilliant Gundy!!! Way to have your finger on the pulse of the game.
This "L" is squarely on Gundy's shoulders.

Officiating is always the 12th man against you. Just wait until the OU/Florida game. Those refs hate Stoops. They have called him on some rather stupid things. Bob called a time out during a play. When the team lined up they threw a flag for changing the play. Bob had to take that one to the NCAA. If changing the play is illegal, Sam Bradford would be in jail.

To the poster who said it was an embarrasment to lose to Oregon and should quit playing football, I guess UO should have quit football about 2 years ago.
There was at least one late hit, and having Dez Bryant and Zac Robinson injured really hurt the team, but in the end, Oregan just ran over OSU.
Let's see if the OSU president starts a letter writing campaign like the UO president did after a loss to Oregon.

Next year will be the year. The cowboys have had a great season. I too hate to see you guys end it with a loss.
But hey look at the big picture. This time next year will be for the national champship with a couple of breaks along the way.

Typical whining fans from the state of Oklahoma. The refs were from the Big 10 not the Pac 10. Y'all got out muscled by the "soft" Pac 10 and are looking for an excuse, look no farther than the mirror!
