Holiday blues
Injuries plague Pokes in Holiday Bowl loss
OSU quarterback Zac Robinson gets hammered by Oregon's T. J. Ward during the second half Tuesday in San Diego. Shane Bevel/Tulsa World

SAN DIEGO — Dez Bryant's knee injury, Zac Robinson's shoulder injury, a surprising inability to rush the football and defensive breakdowns doomed Oklahoma State to a 42-31 Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon at Qualcomm Stadium.
After leading 17-7 at halftime, the 13th-ranked Cowboys were crushed by the Ducks' ground attack. Oregon, 10-3 and ranked 15th nationally, rushed for 307 yards and averaged 7.7 yards per attempt.
Duck quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, voted the game's offensive MVP, rushed for 106 yards and three third-quarter touchdowns. Running backs Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount gashed the Cowboy defense for a combined total of 193 rushing yards, with Johnson scoring on a 76-yard, first-quarter dash and Blount on a 29-yarder in the fourth period.
After halftime, Oregon rushed for 172 yards. OSU ran for 49.
"I think it's a very simple explanation," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "Oregon was a much more physical football team in the second half."
OSU was bidding for its first 10-win season since 1988, when the Gundy-quarterbacked Cowboys closed that season with a Holiday Bowl triumph over Wyoming.
The 2008 Cowboys, who surged to a 7-0 start and a No. 7 national ranking in October, were beaten in four of their final six games to finish 9-4.
OSU's offense had a hot first period against Oregon, getting points on its first three possessions, but Bryant — OSU's All-American sophomore wide receiver — injured his left knee during the second quarter and was clearly hobbled during the second half.
Despite the injury, Bryant set Holiday Bowl records for catches (13) and receiving yards (167, breaking the old record of 163 set by OSU's Hart Lee Dykes in 1988). He also had a touchdown on a 33-yard catch in the first quarter.
At one point, Robinson was 15-of-21 for 180 yards. But he had what Gundy described as a shoulder separation during the second quarter, and Robinson's accuracy was affected in the second half. He finished 27-of-50 for 329 yards, with two interceptions.
Robinson was not immediately available for comment. OSU officials explained that he was getting treatment on the shoulder. Gundy did not speculate on the severity of Bryant's injury.
"The physical nature of the game affected (Bryant). He got hurt a little bit," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "Their quarterback (Robinson), I don't think he was the same quarterback (after the shoulder injury). He could not shake my hand at the end of the game. He gave me his left hand when I went to shake his hand, so, obviously, he had gotten hit a little bit. That's part of the game of football."
With 383 yards of total offense, Robinson did break Gundy's school record for career total offense. With one remaining season of eligibility, Robinson's total stands at 7,786 yards.
Most glaring was OSU's failure to effectively run the football. The Cowboys entered with an average of 256.0 yards per game, but on Tuesday mustered only 119 (3.2 per attempt). Kendall Hunter, who rushed for 1,518 yards during the regular season, ran 13 times for 37 yards against Oregon.
"We just weren't effective enough running the football," Gundy said. "Ultimately, (the Ducks) were more physical than we were."
Oregon had a 565-469 advantage in total yards. The Cowboys were only 4-of-15 on third-down conversions.
OSU took a 17-7 lead to the halftime locker room, but its momentum dissolved on the opening kickoff of the second half. Oregon's Walter Thurmond III broke a 91-yard return to the Cowboy 3-yard line, and Masoli scored on a 1-yard plunge.
A shootout then developed as there were five lead changes. The Ducks led 35-31 when the OSU defense stuffed Oregon on a goal-line stand, but the Cowboys did not capitalize and were forced to punt.
Oregon answered with Blount's 29-yard, tackle-breaking touchdown run with 3:01 left to play, giving the Ducks an insurmountable cushion of 11 points.
"We are not making excuses for anyone who had an injury," Gundy said. "Oregon had a good team. It came down to us not being able to run the ball."

Dang it! I fell asleep and missed the end of the game and now see the score. Fourth quarters have not been kind to the Cowboys. They'll be a really good team next year, and I'll bet Gundy gets those players in some serious conditioning drills. Football is also an endurance contest.
Hope my Sooners fare better!

Yeah Krypto- more well reasoned OSU commentary that is especially laughable considering OU's bowl record of late. The only thing I can figure is maybe you failed to graduate from there? Most of your posts (including sports articles that don't even mention OSU) somehow take a swipe at the Cowboys. It almost appears obsessive looking at your profile activity. Dr. Phil out there?

O bama, I dont know what game you were watching in the first half. I saw nothing but well nothing as far as a run game goes. Kendall Hunter could not get his footing on that awful field.

What do you do when your QB just gets the crap knocked out of him, call two consecutive pass plays. Brilliant Gundy! What do you do when your star WR is injured and you have a under-used 1st round NFL TE ready and waiting...keep throwing to the hurt WR. Brilliant Gundy!! What do you do when your QB is still showing signs of injury from that previous hit and us unable to throw more than 10yrs...run deep pass routes over and over. Brilliant Gundy!!! Way to have your finger on the pulse of the game.
This "L" is squarely on Gundy's shoulders.

I get so tired of the bickering between OU/OSU "fans." The young men out there that play the game on both teams deserve better than that. Why are the fans the ones that are such poor sports?? I went to OU, both of my kids attend OSU and we also support TU! (I haven't missed a home game in 4 years!) I'm all for healthy competition but why does it always have to get ugly? Shame on you both "Strangelove and krypto-whatever.

Once again, OSU underwhelms and underperforms. Senior all-world tight end Pettigrew went the ENTIRE season WITHOUT a single TD...why? Because the coaching staff doesn't have a clue on how to use the best talent ever fielded by Halloween U. Gumby needs to become a man, and hand the reins over to a real offensive coordinator. It has been 20 years since the pokes have had a 10 win season...20 freak’n years! OSU is in the fifteenth year of their five year rebuilding plan. Same song (High Hopes), twentieth verse! Poooooor aggies…

Although the injuries were bad for the Pokes...the real culprit was OSU's inability to capitalize on three drives into the Duck's territory uring the second quarter. If they'd scored on those three drives (perhaps a couple of TD's and a field goal) the score would have dramatically changed the Duck's game plan during the second half- forcing them to throw more (something they're uncomfortable doing). Robinson missed a wide open WR, overthrew Pettigrew and Bryant both during that quarter.
Gotta make plays boys. Playmakers make plays. That's the difference in the game.
Oh - and by the way - Both teams played on the same crappy field...don't make excuses.

All of you people should see the game for what it really is, and quit the bickering... What it says is maybe the BIG12 isn`t as good as we thought.. A number 2 from the Pac 10 beats big 12 number 4.. We need to watch all of the big 12 games and root for those guys.. I do agree with Dave in Houston this loss is clearly on Gundys play calling.. Im convinced he pulls plays out of a hat and they all say the same thing first look at Dez, and if thats not there run.. Plus Oregon just out Played us on the physical side of the ballgame.. The Cowboys couldnt score in the red zone , no surprise its been that way all year. But hey there`s next year by golly, we`ll show em then ..We will keep getting better , and we might even have some guys that can tackle and not get run over , by their QB come on .... You have some offense .hire a def coach to go with that off.. Any way it as usual Cowboys Choked . thats why they are named choke a poke..

Since ESPN chose to air the final minutes of the Humanitarian Bowl the first few minutes of the Holiday Bowl were missed - I would be interested in knowing what conference the game officials represented. We witnessed late hits, holding, and blocking-in-the-back plays that were not flagged. To the goofballs that have nothing else to do but downgrade the Cowboys - get a life.

Had the game been played anywhere than on the west coast half of the hits Zac took would have been called unnecessary roughness or late hits on the q-back. OU had trouble with that same team for the same reasons. The NCAA needs to do something about the PAC TEN.

Boise State (what conference)? West Virginia (horrible Big East)? At least we made it a game with the second ranked team in the Pac 10.
I was at the game last night and what you could not see on tv was the play that separated Zac's shoulder. He threw a completion and was just standing after the throw. Well after, a Oregon player came in a took Zac down. The head official just looked at the palyers and called nothing. Even the Oregon fans told us that was an obvious late hit. Hey, that happens in football and it just shows how tough our guys are. Even though we had two stars hurt for the second half, we still had the chance at the end. I was disapoitned with the defense effort (as usual).

IMO...everyone should root for 1) their school, 2) whatever helps their school, 3) their state/region, 4) their conference, etc.
The "whatever helps their school" is the gray area. If an OU loss helps OSU, well, I become an OU Opponent fan. Use of this caveat beyond that is just juvenile.

Was OSU's kicker hurt as well? There were a couple of drives in the first half when a field goal attempt would have been warranted. 23-7 at half looks a lot better than 17-7. Maybe Oregon would have been forced to pass the ball a bit more in the second half if there were a few more points on the board. There was ONE late hit on Robinson that should have been called. Wasn't the reason the offensive and defensive lines stunk it up though. Clearly the poor tackling and lack of adjustments on defense were to blame for the loss but sometimes Gundy makes me scratch my head with the way he calls a game.

Wow, what a game. Back and forth the entire day. Both teams played great, Oregon just put enough hits on Zac, Des and the running game to stop the Cowboys when it mattered. And, Oregon's running game was awsome. Oh well, better luck next year.

It was painful just watching Dez and Zac try to perform with injuries that were obviously crippling their performance.
And they kept showing over and over the series of clips of Zac getting slammed including the CLEARLY late hit that was never called.
ziggycat, let us have a few good shots like those at you and then see how you perform afterwards. Oh heck, I'd just like to have a few good shots at you, regardless....

I'm a Duck fan in Eugene and a former Oklahoman.
OSU was beaten by the U of O (not OU) because the Ducks simply outplayed the Cowboys. Plain and simple. All of the crybaby comments I have seen on OSU forums give me a few yucks. Man up! This Duck team overcame tremendouse adversity early in the season after losing several quarterbacks to injuries. Also, out coach only makes a little over a million per year. I think we got a better deal than OSU. Lastly, why would your coach keep playing players who were injured. I question his ethics for that. Good luck next year, Cowboys.
