Gundy searches for coordinator

When Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy arrives at his office on Monday morning, his No. 1 priority is expected to be the identification of candidates for the Cowboys' defensive coordinator position.

The job was vacated by Tim Beckman, who became the new head coach at Toledo. Four current Division I-A coordinators are believed to be possible candidates at OSU. They are Tyrone Nix of Ole Miss, Bill Young of Miami (Fla.), Dick Bumpas of TCU and Greg Hudson of East Carolina.

Nix, 36, just completed his first season as the Ole Miss coordinator. He spent one year at South Carolina and 10 seasons at Southern Miss (his alma mater). Nix was a Southern Miss linebacker in 1990-93.

Ole Miss closed the 2008 season with a six-game win streak, including a 47-34 Cotton Bowl win over Texas Tech. Nix's defense twice sacked Tech quarterback Graham Harrell (including once for a safety) and had a pair of interceptions.

The 64-year-old Young is an Oklahoma City native who played linebacker and end at OSU in 1965-67. The well-traveled Young has been at Miami for one season. His first coordinator position was at the University of Tulsa in 1980-85. He was a coordinator also at Ohio State (1988-95), Oklahoma (1996-97), Southern Cal (1978-2000) and Kansas (2002-07).

Bumpas, 59, is a Fort Smith, Ark., native and was a finalist for the 2008 Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach. In TCU's 17-16 Poinsettia Bowl victory over previously unbeaten Boise State, Bumpas' defense limited the Broncos to only 28 rushing yards and 250 total yards.

As an Arkansas defensive tackle, Bumpas was the 1970 Southwest Conference defensive player of the year. He coached at Arkansas, Notre Dame and Tennessee, and also at all three Division I-A service academies.

Hudson, 41, is a former Notre Dame linebacker who coached at Minnesota, Cincinnati and Connecticut. He just completed his fifth season as East Carolina's coordinator. The 2008 Pirates captured the Conference USA title, winning at Tulsa in the league title game while forcing the Hurricane to commit seven turnovers.

In OSU's 42-31 Holiday Bowl loss last week, Oregon rolled up 565 total yards. Since 2002, no OSU team has had a national total-defense ranking of better than 74th. Entering the current bowl season, OSU was 86th in total defense and 110th in pass defense.

The East Carolina defense was pretty stout. They did a good job against TU's spread. I would go after Hudson.
