Cowboys recruit has talent, toughness

OSU beat writer Bill Haisten interviews Lowe.

On any recruit's bio, there are the basic measurables — height, weight, 40-yard time, statistics.

By those standard measurements, Daytawion Lowe is regarded a blue-chip prospect. He is rated by Scout.com as the nation's No. 11 safety prospect.

But when an intangible like toughness also is considered, Lowe's value increases. In three seasons at Midwest City Carl Albert High School, he started in all 41 of the Titans' games and was a difference-maker in all three phases — defense, offense and special teams.

A four-star national recruit and a Tulsa World first-team All-State selection at safety, the 6-foot, 180-pound Lowe announced his commitment to Oklahoma State on Oct. 30 (the birthday of his mother, Lueretia Lowe). Recruited primarily by Cowboy associate head coach Joe DeForest, Daytawion Lowe made an official visit to the OSU campus on Jan. 16-17.

In 14 seasons as Carl Albert's head coach, Gary Rose has recorded seven Class 5A state titles and 144 victories. Rose says Lowe is the best defensive back he has coached and among the toughest players he has coached.

"We were aware of Daytawion when he was in middle school," Rose says. "We knew he was a great athlete and we expected him to be a great high school player. He was."

Lowe sustained a right-shoulder injury during the 2008 season, but did not inform his coaches about it until after the Class 5A championship game — a Carl Albert loss to Booker T. Washington. Lowe underwent surgery in December.

"I'm going through rehab (and) I'm doing pretty good," Lowe said. "It feels great now. I'm working on getting stronger now."

On his distinction of never missing a game in high school, Lowe said, "I think I was fortunate that I didn't get injuries. I thank God that I didn't get injuries where I couldn't play. If I was hurting, that was no excuse not to play. The only reason I wouldn't play is if I was really, really injured.

"If I was hurting, I wouldn't tell. I practice all week. I wasn't going to (miss) that game."

As a Titan senior, Lowe finished with 127 tackles and four interceptions. Carl Albert had another four-star recruit, David Oku, at tailback, but Lowe occasionally was used out of the backfield and averaged 10.2 yards per carry. As a receiver, he totaled 16 catches for 373 yards and four touchdowns. On 14 punt returns, he averaged 19.3 yards. Driven by Lowe and Oku (who remains undecided on his college destination), the Titans had a three-year mark of 36-5 and captured the 2006 state title.

Lowe's first name is mispronounced "a lot," he says. It is has two syllables and is pronounced day-TWAN. Lowe owns and regularly rides a horse — a 3-year-old Tennessee walker.

Competing for the Carl Albert track team, Lowe runs in the 400- and 200-meter races and is a member of the 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relay teams.

Ricky Price and Quinton Moore, OSU's starting safeties in 2008, were seniors and have graduated. The Cowboys have a pair of promising sophomores in Victor Johnson and Johnny Thomas. Lowe, as a first-year freshman, would seem to have a chance to play his way into the two-deep rotation.

"I come in with the mind-set that if I can help, I want to help," Lowe said. "I'm ready to come in and do what I've got to do. (OSU coaches) tell me that I have an opportunity, and I'm willing to take the opportunity."

I'm happy a fellow Titan has decided to also become a fellow Cowboy.

Sounds like great athlete. But OSU better sign Wharton HS athlete Jarius Jones before Mich ST does this kids the real deal. He played SS, WR, RB, PUNT and K returner and will just blow you up a real thoroughbred

The audio interview would have been a lot more enjoyable without the screaming morons in the back.
