He served in Iraq, made the OSU football team and now wants to be a TV star

Jason Evans, a walk-on football player at OSU, is also a candidate for MTV's "The Real World." Stephen Pingry / Tulsa World

OKLAHOMA STATE'S football team was on television 10 times last season. Walk-on defensive back Jason Evans is ready for his close-up.

Evans, a Hale High School graduate, auditioned for the MTV reality show "The Real World" and expects to find out soon whether he will be invited to join the cast.

Evans is a reality show veteran (he has appeared on the MTV dating show "Next") and is a veteran, period. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps after high school and twice trekked to Iraq.

What that means is this: Whether Evans gets chosen for "The Real World" or not, he has real-world experiences that can't be learned in a classroom or locker room. Meet perhaps the most interesting OSU football player you've never heard of before.

Evans, 23, wrote on his MySpace page that his story could be a book. Let's skip past birth, diapers and early years in California (and Sperry) and go straight to 9/11.

"They had the coverage on TV in our class and I just remember being mad and wanting to get revenge for our country," Evans said.

At one point in high school, Evans fancied himself going to college to play football. But knee and ankle injuries wrecked his junior and senior seasons at Hale, so he took it as a sign that he should join the military. He became a Marine, just like dad.

Evans wanted action. He wanted to kick down doors and find spider holes. The closest he got to combat was twice escorting cargo to Iraq.

Buddies weren't as fortunate. In March of 2004, two pals were in a military vehicle that was attacked in Iraq. James Crosby came back in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down. Andrew Brownfield didn't come back at all. Evans said he and other Marines got tattoos in remembrance of Brownfield.

The tragedies weighed heavily on Evans. Family issues back in Oklahoma led to an honorable discharge and he became a student at OSU.

Know how everyone yells "Norm!" when George Wendt walks into Cheers? When Evans visits Stillwater night spots, girls yell "Next!"

Blame it on MTV's random discovery of Evans. It happened when he and friends road tripped to the west coast and attended a pro volleyball tournament at Manhattan Beach.

"I was literally just walking to my buddy's car and a guy walks up to me and says 'hey' and starts talking to me," Evans said. "I thought he was just a weirdo."

The stranger was a casting director for MTV. Evans did a quick on-camera interview, one thing led to another and he was invited to appear on the dating show "Next."

The premise of the show is this: A guy gets his pick of five gals (or vice versa). Potential dates get off a bus one at a time and you say "next" if you are ready to move on to the next candidate.

"I ended up not picking any of them," Evans said. "I guess I'm too picky. Four of the five, I turned them down as soon as they got off the bus. They didn't do a very good job of recruiting for me."

The national TV gig (and perhaps being hard to please) enhanced Evans' standing among Stillwater's eligible bachelors. He said his social life, on a one-to-five scale, is a five. Know what could bump it up another notch? Joining the jock-ocracy.

Because of high school injuries, Evans never got football out of his system. He didn't want to be one of those people who, 20 years from now, wonders if he could have played college football. Evans scratched the itch. He said he took part in an OSU walk-on combine prior to last season.

Evans said he hadn't touched a football in three years, but he met or exceeded standards in measurables (40 time, bench press, vertical leap, etc.) at the tryout and was allowed to stick around.

"He showed that he had enough ability and desire that we thought he would be a good member of our walk-on program," OSU assistant Robert Matthews said.

Evans — 6-foot and 180 pounds — lined up at strong safety the first day the Cowboys put on pads. He thinks coaches tested him by running the same sweep over and over. His task was to take on a fullback that was built like a bowling ball.

"I guess they were just trying to feel me out to see if I was just some punk and I didn't back down one inch," Evans said.

"We just blasted each other. I didn't knock him over, but he didn't knock me over. Ever since then, ever since the first 30 minutes of the first practice, everybody has been real cool to me. They found out real quick that I wasn't just some kid out there for a name tag and a jersey. I was actually out there to play."

Evans is still waiting to play. He didn't get in a game and, midway through last season, he re-injured the knee that he hurt in high school. He intends to rejoin the team, but would miss a chunk of summer workouts if he gets sent to some exotic locale for "The Real World."

Evans wants to get chosen for the show so he can catch someone's eye in Hollywood. He said he's always watching something — TV, movie, whatever — and saying "I could do that."

Evans wants to make enough money to someday support his parents (he said his dad is battling cancer) and he can't see himself ever being a suit-and-tie, 9-to-5 guy. He's not interested in that kind of real world.

"I think there's something else out there for me," he said.

Great story and he sounds like a cool guy. I wish him the best and hope to see him on the field this season.

MTV? It's still around? all I see is reality TV shows. Real World? Does anyone actually watch that show anymore? Good on him for joining in the fight, but like most Marines he seems a bit too cocky. Hope things work out for his dad though.

Next? The Real World? My social life on a scale from 1 to 5 is a 5?

Somebody should have nicknamed this kid, "Summer's Eve."

Kev, while he sounds like a self-absorbed teenager he's in his 20's. I guess 23 is the new 13. I used to think the Sooners paid their players well, but get a load of the conspicuous consumer crap in his room.

He was in the Marines for at least two tours of Iraq - I would say that he probably earned enough money for a plasma television through that service, not through walking on to the OSU football team. You have to respect a kid that goes out and gets a job to pay for college and then tries walking on to a very competitive football team, not asking mommy and daddy to empty their bank account or applying for a dozen credit cards to get stuff like that.

I would be more impressed if he was trying out for American Idol or something of that nature. The Real World? That show is a joke. They will have anti-war people on there too just so they can add some drama. Then they will have few gay people, and some sluts. Same old crap

How does a guy that hasn't touched a football in three years get invited to walk-on? Is this a testament to his ability or a lack of team talent?

Why is this newsworthy? I love Jimmie Trammel but this article is a waste of paper. Regardless of his military service, he's still a tool in my book. Maybe some day he'll grow up and quit chasing candy like a little kid.

wow everyone's so hateful. Who cares? Well obviously alot of people b/c the real world is still on of the most highly rated reality shows on tv after 20 years. This guy unselfishly gave up a chance to go do something he wanted in the best interest of OUR COUNTRY, thats for ME, YOU, and our families so that alone gets my respect. Then after fulfilling his obligation he decided to pursue a dream of his (which he has certainly earned the right to do) and made a football team that, may i remind you, was ranked 6th in the country last year so there's certainly no lack of talent, and if he can perform at that level after a 3 year layoff and multiple injuries then good for him. And Jimmie I applaud your choice with this story. We always here about athletes that do the wrong things, it's nice see a story about one doing something positive. Good luck son, see you in the fall....GO POKES!

OMG, I had to create an account just to post on this topic. The right thing? I am an OSU alum, a veteran of the US Armed Forces, Posse member, all that. Maybe it was Jimmie's style of writing but I don't like this kid at all... Next challenge? He escorted cargo and turned down girls because in his mind he is all that... Those are accomplishments? Serve in the military, raise some kids, get two masters degrees, start a couple successful businesses... Those are real life challenges, not looking for the quick fame and fortune buck. I hate to say it about a Cowboy, especially a young man but this article makes him out to be everything I hate about the young, cocky, how I get mine doesn't matter society we live in today. Challenges? The Right Thing? I know OSU has better to offer. Good luck on the Real "act like a whiny, sniveling bitch so the rating are up" World.

Jealous much?!
Wow. Some of you guys..and it's all guys..are so chicky jealous it's ridiculous.

He's getting some spotlight and you can't handle it. You wish you could get a fraction of the ladies attention he's getting.
Well, get used to it, fellas, because there's always going to be someone who's better looking, smarter, more athletic and luckier than you.
Deal with it, hate mongers.

Jealous? Only thing i'm jealous about is he is able to see Oklahoma games easier than I am. I honestly don't think he is better looking, smarter, or luckier than I am, but hey, that is why people are entitled to thier own opinion. The Marines certainly didn't teach him any humility.

This whole thing is hilarious. First of all, he didn't enlist in the military to serve our country. He enlisted for "revenge." Revenge, simply put, is irrational and self serving. There is absolutely no honor in revenge.

Secondly, mbrant02 is absolutely correct. The only "challenge" this guy is looking for is how many girls he can pull in after his 15 minutes of fame are up if he is indeed cast on The Pathetic World. Maybe the challenge should be to hold himself to a higher standard.

Danny, you have zero clue what you are talking about--as usual. Stick the Oklahoman website where everyone is already accustomed to your remedial ramblings.

This has nothing to do with jealousy. In fact, had this been an OU athlete you would have been first in line to rip this article apart...especially if it had been on the other website. Don't try to deny it either. Everyone knows better.

ok first of all, anyone who remembers what 9/11 was like knows that we all felt that hate in our heart for who was responsible. And "revenge for my country" doesnt mean he's some animal that wanted to go kill woman and children, it means that he wanted to be a part of punishing those responsible. And all this stuff about "real challenges" like starting a business or what not. He's still in college idiots. I wish we could fast foward 10 years b/c i'm sure he will be more sucessful than you and have better things to do that rip a young man over a newpaper article. You can't hate on someone for trying to move on to bigger and better things and not just settling for the same old 9 to 5. He's pursuing his dreams not just talking about them like most people do. And nobody in the Navy, or any other branch of our military for that matter, has the right to say anything about a marine so unless you were a seal or something you need to just watch your mouth "Sooner". And how does bein on a gameshow make him "cocky". Seems to me that's part of the show. And someone who put's there country first, and want's to make it big to make enough money to support their parents definately is'nt self absorbed. Sounds like his family did a hell of a job rasing him to me, and all of you haters should take some notes. Don't hate thoose people that go for their dreams just because you may have lost sight of yours!

Should I take the opinion of somebody who uses phrases such as "hate on" and "haters" seriously?

Survey says: No.

Coupled with horrible grammar and hypocritical judgement, it's no coincidence that you are his number one fan.

With that being said, call me crazy but I think I'll stick with my original assessment of the guy.

Never had a bad run-in with any other military service member. I actually have many friends in the other branches as well as friends in other nations' militaries. I was just pointing out what I have witnessed in my 13+ years of service. Don't get me wrong, there is no one else i'd rather have next to me when in the "sand box". There is a certain attitude that they, as in most young marines, have and it's usually a "i'm better than everyone eles" one. I stand by my previous comments. He just seems a bit immature and "high school"-ish.

Are you guys are seriously being critical of the kid for wanting "revenge" after 9/11? Who didn't? I suppose all those service men and women who enlisted after Pearl Harbor were self-serving too. Pretty lame critique folks.
