Cowboys gain a Kentucky transfer

Former Kentucky basketball player Matt Pilgrim said Saturday that he has committed to play at Oklahoma State.

Pilgrim, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward, began his college career at Hampton. He transferred to Kentucky and sat out last season per NCAA rules. Pilgrim became the equivalent of a college "free agent" after John Calipari replaced Billy Gillispie as Kentucky's coach. Calipari oversigned when he brought in his first class of recruits and chose not to renew Pilgrim's scholarship.

Pilgrim, who visited Stillwater in June, said he chose OSU over Maryland, Memphis and his hometown school, Cincinnati. He said he liked the OSU program and said he and head coach Travis Ford "just kind of clicked."

"And I saw how hard the players worked and I can definitely relate to that, so it seems to be a good fit," Pilgrim said.

Pilgrim will be a junior on the court and a senior in the classroom next season. He is transferring for the second time in two years and, because he didn't play last season and because of the circumstances that caused him to leave Kentucky, he hopes to win an NCAA appeal that would allow him to be eligible for the upcoming season.

"I'm staying positive about it," he said.

Pilgrim said Hampton is a good program, but he transferred to Kentucky because he wants to be a pro someday and he wanted to challenge himself. He averaged 11.0 points and 5.3 rebounds as a Hampton freshman, earning MEAC rookie of the week honors four times. He missed nine games that season with
a broken foot, then scored 13 in his collegiate debut against Virginia. He averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in his other season at Hampton.

We'll see, we'll see,
The proff is in the playing.

(Bobdog hopes he is good, but doesn't get excited about talk, he wants to see the walk.)

Bobdog, word has it that he'll be strutting instead of just "wants to see the walk" as you put it. Word had it he pretty much held his own aganist Pat Patterson in UK's practice. I don't think it's fair that he'll have to sit out another year. he should get to pay this year because Cal took his scolly away from him.

I aam a KY fan thru and thru and I would have just as soon as taken Travis as Cal as my pick. Travis is one tough little SOG. I believe in 4 to 5 years he'll be a top 10 or so level college coach. GO Travis and kick some butt.

If Cal did not want him - why should Ford?

His scholarship wasn't renewed ???

I was told on these posts that scholarships were good for 4 years' when I explained about how the TU coach let one of his players go, so he could recruit another player more to his liking....

SO, are scholarships worth 4 years' or are they just up to the coaches' discretion ???? Someone answer please....Thank you....

ukhoppithpopity,
"'word has it that he'll be strutting instead of just "wants to see the walk" as you put it.'"

You have to be a long time Cowboy fan to understand my less than enthusiastic responce that a hot dog is coming to town.

(Bobdog would love to see him strutting his stuff. Bobdog will get excited if he does.)

Look BobDog, the guys name is Pilgrim, he is more than likely going to turn out to be a Turkey, so the chicken coment may have been pretty close.

If he's a Pilgrim I hope he comes armed with more than a blunderBUST.

(Bobdog will wait and see. In the meantime pass some more of that chicken.)

BobDog, check out some of his highlights on youtube. The guy has TONS of talent. Cal ran him off so that he could clear room on the UK squad for "one and done" recruits. This guy will make an immediate impact in the middle.

"tulsandn"... Athletic scholarships are not like a 4 year contract as some folks think. They are essentially (4) 1 year scholarships renewable each year at the school's discression.

It's pretty lame really. The school can choose to cut ties without penalty. If the kid opts out though, he has to sit out a year.

"He averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in his other season at Hampton". We're talkin' 'bout Hampton folks...don't get too excited. Most kids who go pro as he stated he wants to do some day, don't get there by going thru Hampton > Kentucky > OSU > ??? You get the idea.

Tony Allen, Joey and Steven Graham, and to a lesser extent John Lucas II have all made NBA rosters despite switching schools midway thru their collegiate careers. And they were all on the same OSU team!

They all would probably like to go pro but very few actually do. You never really know how kids will develop athletically or how much their desire and work ethic will increase. I don't think it has much to do with what school they went to. Just ask Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, etc., etc.
