Mike Gundy's new contract specifies that the Oklahoma State football coach will be paid $1.8 million this year, the Tulsa World has learned.

Over the course of the seven-year, $15.7 million contract, Gundy's average pay is $2.2 million. The Cowboy coach is scheduled to receive $1.8 million this year, $1.925 million in 2010, $2.1 million in 2011, $2.275 million in 2012, $2.45 million in 2013, $2.5 million in 2014 and $2.65 million in 2015.

If Oklahoma State captures the national championship, Gundy collects a bonus of $500,000. It is not yet known what other bonuses are written into the contract, which will not be released to the public until it is signed by OSU President Burns Hargis.

Hargis is expected to sign the contract next week.

Gundy and athletic director Mike Holder reached agreement on the basic terms in December. The contract took effect on Jan. 1, but Gundy did not sign it until last week. Gundy also gets the use of a new vehicle, and his family is provided a membership at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater.

When promoted to the head-coaching position in January 2005, Gundy was paid $700,000. Now, he is the highest-paid coach in OSU history. Travis Ford had held that distinction, having made $1.3 million during his first year as the men's basketball coach.

Gundy's new contract includes a $3 million buyout clause. If he leaves OSU while still bound to the terms of the contract, the university would be due a payment of $3 million.

Gundy's previous buyout sum was equal to the amount that he was being paid at the time. If he had left OSU last year, for example, the buyout sum would have amounted to $1,053,000, which was Gundy's 2008 compensation figure.

At midseason last year, OSU was 7-0 and ranked seventh nationally. Not since 1988 has a Cowboy team reached the Top 10. The 2008 Cowboys finished 9-4 overall, 5-3 in the Big 12. They were No. 16 in the final Associated Press poll.

As Gundy enters the 2009 season, which opens with OSU's Sept. 5, ABC-televised showdown with Georgia at Boone Pickens Stadium, his overall record is 27-23. He has taken the Cowboys to three consecutive bowl appearances.

Various national magazine rankings suggest that OSU may be, for the first time in school history, a presence in the Top 10 of the AP preseason poll. The first AP poll is released on Aug. 22.— BY BILL HAISTEN, WORLD SPORTS WRITER

I'm a Sooner fan, but when they mention the head coach salaries, I think it's only fair that they also mention how much money they've brought to their respective schools from Bowl games and TV contracts beside the year's salary.

Coaching isn't all w's and l's, a coach better be bringing in some revenue as well.

Borrowed Modem, so real football consists of coaches making tirades and rants every Sunday? Or players staring in their own reality shows? Or maybe the fact that the stars are constanty babied with multi million dollar contracts themselves? That's "real" football?

Fire Gundy, come on. Even you have to be a little excited about this season!

Borrowed Modem, where exactly do you think that NFL players come from? Was Peyton Manning pretending to be a football player when he was at Tennessee? Was Adrian Peterson pretending at OU?

Please stop posting. Your gibberish is laughable at best.

BM, that's like saying the NBA is more entertaining than college basketball. It's no contest. The No Fun League pales in comparison to college football. Don't get me wrong, I watch it and appreciate the talent level but at the end of the day I can take it or leave it, just like the NBA (until the playoffs).
