Union rolls in road rout in Canton, Ohio.

CANTON, Ohio -- It took the Union High football team two days to get a victory in Ohio, but the extra day was well worth it.

In a game that started late Saturday and ended in the early hours Sunday morning, Union routed three-time Canton McKinley 31-0, a traditional power in Ohio.

Playing in the third annual Kirk Herbstreit Challenge, the Redskins scored 10 points off a pair of McKinley turnovers and another touchdown following a blocked punt in the shadows of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The impressive performance from Class 6A's second-ranked team gave Kirk Fridrich a win in his first game as Union's head coach.

After an 11-yard touchdown by Jeremy Smith gave the Redskins a 17-0 lead at the 6:07 mark of the second quarter, Union delivered the knockout blow just before halftime. The Redskins used just two plays and eight seconds to cover 58 yards for another score. Quarterback Brandon Rogers tossed an 8-yard touchdown to Jeremy Smith with just eight seconds left in the second quarter to give the Redskins a 24-0 halftime advantage.

Smith rushed for 107 yards and scored three times -- twice on the ground and the other through the air.

"We are Union, and we played like we are," said Smith. "We just wanted to represent Oklahoma and show everyone we can win.

"It was a good experience to come all the way here and beat a good football team. We were just more hyped up than them and got the job done."

Rogers tossed a touchdown pass and scored on a 1-yard run. He finished 8-of-16 for 125 yards passing. Tracy Moore had three receptions for 71 yards.

"I couldn't think of a better way to start my head coaching career than to represent the state of Oklahoma at this event," said Fridrich. "The kids are thrilled to death to have an opportunity to do this. We couldn't have been treated any better; it's been first class all the way."

Union continued its dominance in the second half. After a scoreless third quarter, the Redskins hit paydirt again in the fourth quarter, with a 5-yard scoring running from Smith. The drive began inside the McKinley 10 after Union recovered a fumble. It was the third Bulldog turnover forced by the Redskins' defense.

"It's just Game 1, and we have some tough games ahead," Fridrich said. "But it was a nice trip and winning was a bonus for the kids."

Leading the defensive charge for Union was Randy Stanley, who recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass to set up two Redskins' scores.

The defense forced McKinley to punt six times.

Union plays top-ranked Jenks at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Chapman Stadium on the University of Tulsa campus.

WAY TO GO UNION! What a great way to start the season! Even though my kids have graduated and are in college it's hard "not" to still follow the games. Congratulations Coach Fridrich on a fantastic beginning!

I'm sure it was because the other three games that day had finished late and it just kept moving back the other games, they were scheduled to play at 7:45.

Union sucks! Jenks and Union are good because they recruit from the surrounding schools, a la Kejuan Jones from Hale.

It is always funny to see the jealousy towards Jenks and Union, they are good because they have winning programs who know how to do it the right way. I love that Union went up to the Hall of Fame stadium and dominated the home team on their field. Everyone should be proud of the way they represented OK football.

Very good job Union! You guys really surprised me i didnt think you guys could win, i actually thought that Jenk should be in the Ohio vs USA Challenge. But you guys proved me wrong, you guys dominated, and showed everyone that Oklahoma football is a FORCE!!!!

P.S. Fred i see TPS High School coaches at middle school football games asking kids to play for them. Only difference between TPS schools and Union and Jenk is that the kids want to play for Union and Jenk.

TO THE PERSON WHO INDICATED UNION AND JENKS RECRUIT, DO YOU REALIZE KIDS ARE DRAWN TO THESE SCHOOLS BECAUSE OF THE FACILITIES AND THE EDUCATION. THE COACHES DO NOT REALLY GO AROUND TOWN RECRUITING. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO PLAY SPORTS AT THESE SCHOOLS AND NOT LIVE IN THE DISTRICT? DOESN'T HAPPEN.

This was a great win for Okla! We had approx 300 union fans here and we were loud and proud. Coach fred had the kids ready and the game proceeded with a very business-like attitude by the kids. It was awesome to be here and even more awesome to shut a team, that some have said has NEVER been shut out. The game started about 2 hours late, because of the previous 3 games went over.

Samuel, you are right about the TPS coaches recuiting from middle schools but the kids do get to pick what school they want to go to. Last Year East Central had MANY kids that lived in Rogers school district playing for them, but like I said the kids get to pick what school to go to. Rogers or East Central, Returning State Champs or a team that had not made the playoffs since 1974, what school are you going to pick if you are a football player?

As an Ohio native, I am familiar with Ohio high school football, and it is among the best in the nation. Canton McKinley has always had one of the best programs in Ohio for almost 100 years, and they usually challenge for the Ohio state championship, if not win it(not to mention being highly regarded nationally). Because Oklahoma football is so great, and Union has always had one of the best programs in Oklahoma, I knew Union would not be intimidated by the Bulldogs. For them to so dominate them is a testament not only to Union as a team, but to the quality of football here in Oklahoma, as McKinley is absolutely NO pushover. Congrats to Union, and all the best the rest of the year.

First, way to go Union. You represented Oklahoma high school football well. The Canton paper said you were too fast and physical for McKinley. Way to go!!!

Second, thank you TW for having this late game on your website this morning.

Congtratulations to coach Fred and the Union players. You represented the state with a great deal of class as we knew you would. Everyone in the state should be happy about this accomplishment. It makes the whole state better in the eyes of everyone outside the stat. Good luck vs Jenks Friday night.

FRED, I am interested why people like you just have got to try and find the negative in absolutely everything. The world is NOT out to get you. I went to Hale with Kejuan and if you were in his situation, you would have done the same. He went to college and got a degree. That may have never happened had he stayed at Hale. Be proud of all that Oklahoma football is and HAVE FUN with it. Boomer Sooner and Go Union!!!

I graduated from Massillon (OHIO) high school, many years ago. McKinley was our biggest rival. Sure am glad to see the way Union handled the Bulldogs. My dream game would be for Oklahoma Sonners to play my Alma Mater Ohio State for the national championship. I'd enjot it no matter who won. Good luck Redskins.

Jenks and BTW and East Central recruit from other schools. I think that is called "stacking the deck" or actually, saying that your own local kids are not "good" enough so we have to go outside to get better players. Because when you start acting like you are playing on the college level, by recruiting, that is really what you are saying to your local kids. Would Jenks have won the State Championship if they had not had Kejuan Jones? We will never know now will we. I heard Union doesn't recruit, that they believe in their local kids. Good for them.

MDM, Tulsa- Now Jacksonville (9/2/2007 9:33:55 PM)
I graduated from Union in 2004. #1- Redskin is not offensive so get over yourself. I'm Cherokee. And I am PROUD to say that I am a REDSKIN at heart. #2- A lot of teams recruit their players. It has nothing to do with if they believe in their locals or not. Tulsa is a big city and Union covers a large area. Another thing about that is there are SO MANY amazing players all across the state and one of the ways for them to be recognized is to go to a school that is known nationally. If they are stuck in a "po-dunk" 4C school, their chances of getting a football scholarship are slim to none. So A LOT of them go searching for schools (Union, Jenks) in order to help themselves out.

I was friends with Snider, Blankenship, Peterson, Huntzinger, Webb, Robison, Spavital... all of the guys. I knew the coaches b/c I grew up with their kids. With my graduating class and the ones surrounding, no kids were recruited from out of the 918... the kids that played football that didn't live in Tulsa had their parents either teaching at Union or Coaching at Union and those are rules at all schools...That if a parents teaches or coaches at a school but lives outside of the district, their kids can go to that school. But I CAN promise you that Union does NOT play students if they do not meet the GPA requirement. Kejuan Jones on the other hand graduated from Jenks without being able to read. And had a coach with him on the ACT AND the test was untimed. That's why Stoops quit playing him b/c he realized he didn't know how to read. You think I'm kidding? Do your research.

And way to go Union on your victory! I'm out in Jacksonville, Florida now but I already have my recording scheduled for the replay. And good luck against Jenks, but I don't think you'll need it!!!!
