Prolific Tech could stump OSU defense
OSUs No.92 Tonga Tea, Jr. tackles Florida Atlantics No.20 Charles Pierre during the first half of the football game at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., on September 8, 2007. JAMES GIBBARD/Tulsa World

A downtrodden Oklahoma State defense is matched, in Stillwater, with a surging Texas Tech offense that once again ranks among national leaders in yards and scoring.
It happens Saturday, in a 2:30 p.m. Big 12 opener televised by Fox Sports Net.
The Red Raiders are No. 2 nationally in pass offense. The Cowboys are 93rd in pass defense.
For OSU to record a desperately needed victory, its defense must be significantly better than it was in road losses to Georgia and Troy. In those games, Cowboy coach Mike Gundy said, OSU had a combined total of 36 missed tackles.
With OSU having allowed 562 yards in the 41-23 defeat at Troy, first-year Cowboy defensive coordinator Tim Beckman now must formulate a game plan for Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell and dynamic wideout Michael Crabtree, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound redshirt freshman.
Harrell leads the nation in total offense. Crabtree has a share of the national lead in catches per game (12.7) and is No. 2 in receiving yards (179.3 average).
"If you were to tell me that before the season, I would have said, 'There's no way that will happen,' " Harrell said. "(Crabtree) is a really good player and he's made me a lot of yards, so I appreciate it."
The Troy spread passing attack is comparable to Texas Tech's spread offense, masterminded by eighth-year coach Mike Leach.
Gundy and Beckman insist their defensive schemes were good in advance of the Troy setback. OSU's demise, both say, was a simple matter of flawed execution.
"Guys have to do their jobs together and we have to coach them better. It's a family thing," Beckman said. "It's not the kids' fault. It's not my fault. It's not (cornerbacks coach) Joe DeForest's fault. We're taking it as a family and we all have to get it corrected."
Said linebacker Donovan Woods: "There is no confusion in knowing what we have to do. We just have to go out and do it."
Because Harrell gets rid of the football so quickly, it's nearly impossible to sack Tech's junior QB. Through three games, the Red Raiders have given up only two sacks on 178 pass attempts.
Still, Gundy says, it is important to at least pressure Harrell and disrupt his timing. And for that to happen, he adds, OSU must get stronger play from defensive tackles Jeray Chatham and Maurice Cummings.
"You have to be solid inside to stop the run game. And if you don't get pressure on the passer, anybody can throw a completion on you," Gundy said. "Our interior tackles, it's not all their fault. But we have to get more push."
Saturday's game sets up similarly to the contest played on Nov. 12, 2005, when the then-13th-ranked Red Raiders entered Boone Pickens Stadium as a 23-point favorite. OSU entered with a five-game losing streak. By season's end, the 2005 Cowboys would rank 95th nationally in total defense. But on that day, as the Cowboys prevailed in a 24-17 upset.
That Red Raiders had averaged 47 points and 541 total yards per game. Against OSU, Tech mustered only one offensive touchdown, had only 338 total yards and was 0-of-10 on third-down conversions.
In 2005, Tech attempted 42 passes. This season, the Red Raiders average nearly 60 per game. Cowboy cornerback Jacob Lacey expects to be directly challenged.
"You love that kind of a ballgame," he said. "You know you're going to get tested 10 to 15 times alone, by yourself. It's a good game to see what you've got personally."
Beckman's bottom line: "I don't like losing. I hate losing. Nothing good comes from losing."

New route for The Walk
Because of construction at Boone Pickens Stadium, the Oklahoma State football team will alter its route for The Walk — the team walk that precedes every home game and attracts hundreds of fans.
The change takes effect Saturday, when the Cowboys host Texas Tech for a 2:30 p.m. Big 12 opener.
The Walk will still begin at the Student Union, heading north on Hester. But instead of turning east onto Athletic Avenue, The Walk will continue on Hester before turning east into the stadium’s south parking lot.
On Saturday, The Walk begins at 12:15 p.m.

It is going to be an ugly game. Save yer money, stay home and watch a better match-up on the tube.
Maybe "The Walk" ought to be to the Student Union for refreshments and TV.

Cowboy fans used to complain about not being on television enough. Well, you have your wish, and now you can see your team get embarrassed in living color.

OSU would LOVE to have OU's national prominence. I would much rather lose a national championship game than be the third-tier team in the state behind OU and Tulsa....good thing you've got Pickens to keep you in the news.

That's funny. OSU fan talks smack to OU using "Game of the Century" as the basis for said smack. If all OSU fan can do to try to rile up OU fan is remind them of playing in two MNC games in a row, and taunt them for playing in one of the greatest games ever (twice) that's pretty lame.
OU fan: "We're pretty good."
OSU fan: "Huh-uh! You lost in the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, and Boise beat you in one of the greatest games ever by one point, and that's the second time you've been beaten in a 'Game of the Century.' You guys suck!"
OU fan: "Wait, you say we suck, but list positive things about OU and say they're negative, but OSU has never been close to such 'lows.' What's your point, again?"
OSU fan: "Uhhhh...what's the question?"
OU fan: "What?"
OSU fan: "What."
OU fan: "HUH?!?!"
OSU fan: "What."

Most OU fans have never stepped foot in Norman, and could not even afford a season ticket, and probably never even went to college. That's fine, at least OSU funs are mostly alumni and loyal whether our team loses or wins. Rome wasn't built in a day, and our team may need a few more years to reach prominence. The important fact is that the rivalry divides the state, and its adolescently pathetic. Oklahoma has never required unity like we do in these times of globalization and the US turning into a service driven economy. Anyway, I'm going to the OU vs TU game tonight, and the tech OSU game tomorrow. That would be a hat trick for me! even though 2 out of our states' 3 teams will have a "L" on their records by sundown tomrrow.

Yoda: Please provide basis in your accusation that "most OU fans have never stepped foot in Norman." That sounds like something you pulled out of your *ear*. The first two sentences of your post are completely subjective and absolutely ridiculous. But you're entitled to your opinion, and yours it is. Wait, when did this thread turn political? Did I miss something?
CA: Who said I was an OU fan? I'm just pointing out the lack of logic in your attempt at smack-talking OU fan.

CA: Don't make assumptions. This "everyone's out to get OSU" shtick is a little old by now. So anyone who disagrees with you is an OSU hater and an OU fan? Yeah, right. Maybe, in fact, I'm an OSU grad, alumnus, and fan. How would you know any different?
Just because I said your logic was dumb doesn't mean I hate OSU, or even love OU. Think more before you type, otherwise you make the rest of us look bad.

If we're gonna tell OU fans to "CHEW ON THAT" when referencing two of the greatest games ever played, we might as well tell them that their seven mythical national championships are as good as our zero. Even though OU lost both of those so-called games of the century, what game of OSU's can any of us recall where the stakes were as high, the outcome as hotly contested, and the national interest as great? All I'm saying is that if you're gonna talk trash to OU fan, come up with something other than recognizing things OSU has otherwise never experienced as a school, in terms of football. If you don't you deserve to have them laugh at you. I laughed when I read it.
Come on; you gotta have more game than that.

Yoda: As an OSU alum and fan, I cannot afford season tickets. And we're not even any good. So how is that a criticism of OU fan?
And what if my parents, who live out of the country, have never been to Stillwater? Does that make them bandwagoners or something? Get real, Yoda.
All I'm saying is there's lots of Cowboys fans that are not alums as well. Just because you don't go to school there, that doesn't mean you can't have a rooting interest. Gooners and Cowboys are all the same. There are as many non-alum OSU fans as there are non-alum OU fans (percentage-wise). And would it hurt to have some of those non-alum OSU fans show up at games? It's hard enough now to get the stadium full, maybe we need more people who are NOT graduates of the university. I can tell you, playing anything sports-wise at any level in front of any number of empty seats is very discouraging. Surely someone out there wants to watch the game. Why don't they come? Oh, yeah. OSU fans say you can't go unless you graduated there. And it costs too much anyway.

I'm puzzled by the recent elitist, private country club attitude of a lot of OSU fans. I say all are welcome. College sports are for everyone, not just students and alums.

Yoda...Yes, I HAVE lived in Norman, Graduated from OU, Did have season tickets for several years. I have been a Sooner fan since the early 1950's, own a football autographed by the 1956 Sooners (those mostly responsible for the 47 game streak). Do you know why the number 7 is significant to both OU and OSU? It is the number of National Championships at OU, and the highes AP ranking ever achieved by OSU...

Actually, judging by the number of people I see at the fair with OU garb on, I have to think that Yoda's commentary is pretty much on target. The bandwagon is a curse of success. That's not being critical, it's just a fact. As an OSU fan, I hope our team can someday be good enough to attract that type of fan base. I mean lets face it, when you're clothes shopping at Sam's you want to pick the color of a winner......

When I read the headline "New Route for the Walk", I naturally concluded that OSU got beaten on the way to the stadium. Upon further reflection, if Gundy is leading them, they probably have.

I was going to write this anyway but it's easier after an exciting win over Tech. What A Game!!! Just wanted to say that the Cowboys may never have a really good football team. That's OK I guess. It is my school, my alma mater, my team, and good or not so good, I'll stick by them. I won't disappear from the radar screen when things aren't going well (like "some fans" are prone to do). You're a fan or you're not. So whether we have a good football team or not (and more than likely, we will not), I will be cheering on the Cowboys.
