Win may have saved season in Stillwater

The New Tulsa World Sports Extra:
For the latest scores, stories, photos and stats on OU, OSU an TU football, as well as the rest of college football.
STILLWATER -- Saturday's Oklahoma State- Texas Tech football game will be remembered for a lot of things by the Cowboys and their fans.
The Pokes found themselves a quarterback, saw the return of their most important offensive player and watched a freshman running back act like he's been playing college football for years instead of weeks.
But most of all, Sept. 22 could go down as the day the Cowboys saved their 2007 season with a white-knuckle, come- from-behind, 49-45 win over the Red Raiders that featured some mind-boggling numbers by both teams.
And if ever there was a place that the clich?, "it's better to be lucky than good," was a perfect fit, it was this Big 12 Conference opener in front of 37,850 spectators at Boone Pickens' stadium.
Because if it wasn't for two lucky breaks -- a pair of gifts from the Red Raiders -- the Cowboys would be 1-3 and on the brink of collapse instead of 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12.
No matter how anyone tries to spin it, the Cowboys know they were fortunate as heck to win. But OSU was also due for a last-second game to go its way after being on the short end of several heartbreakers last season in the game's final minute.
Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree personally handed the victory to OSU. The sure-handed redshirt freshman, who had a sensational game, dropped the potential game-winning touchdown pass when he was wide open in the end zone with 11 seconds left.
The inexplicable drop by Crabtree, who had 14 receptions for 237 yards and three touchdowns, came a series after a bonehead decision by Tech coach Mike Leach. With 2:44 left in the game and Tech holding a three-point lead and the ball and OSU down to one timeout, the pass-happy Leach kept right on throwing the ball instead of running it and running time off the clock.
Three incomplete passes later, OSU had the ball back and an opportunity to win it. It took sophomore quarterback Zac Robinson just one play to hit Brandon Pettigrew with a short pass that the junior tight end turned into a dazzling 54-yard, catch-and-run, game-winning touchdown.
It was the last of several exciting plays by Robinson, who was outstanding in just his second start. If he can avoid injury, Robinson left no doubt that he deserves the starting job the rest of the season after he rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing for 211 additional yards and to more scores.
Senior Dantrell Savage and freshman Kendall Hunter also rushed for more than 100 yards. Savage, who sat out OSU's disheartening loss at Troy because of a groin injury, proved when he's the offensive MVP as he jump-started the unit with 130 yards rushing.
And Hunter, who is a Savage clone in size and running style, looked more like a veteran than a true freshman with his nifty and powerful style while running for 113 yards.
The Pokes need Savage to stay healthy and for Robinson and Hunter to continue their rapid progress if they want to have a chance. It was obvious Saturday that OSU's struggling defense is going to force the Cowboys' offense to win a lot of high-scoring shootouts.
Thanks to Crabtree's drop and Leach's goofy play-calling, Tech lost even though the Red Raiders amassed 718 yards of total offense. That included quarterback Graham Harrell having the fourth-best performance in NCAA history when he shredded OSU's shaky secondary for 646 yards and five touchdowns.
"We won, they lost," said first-year OSU defensive coordinator Tim Beckman. "That's the way I look at it."
Uh, the offense won it, coach.
Beckman's defense improved in the second half, allowing only 10 points after putting OSU into a 35-28 hole at halftime. And it took every one of OSU's 610 yards of total offense to write a happy ending to what had been an embarrassing afternoon for the defense.
"They (defense) made the stops when they had to make them and that's why we won the game," OSU offensive coordinator Larry Fedora said. "That's the difference in the game right there."
No, it wasn't. The difference in the game was Crabtree dropping the ball, Leach letting his team down by his macho attitude of continuing to throw the ball and Fedora's excellent play-calling.
But Fedora, being a good team player, called the victory a "total team effort."
There is no way this OSU team can reach its preseason goal of winning the Big 12's South Division and going to a second straight bowl if the defense doesn't make drastic and immediate improvement.
"We have to get better," acknowledged Beckman. "It's a new defense and we've got a lot of things we're asking the kids to do.
"We've got to stop the pass better, and we've got to create a better pass rush."
If Beckman can't get that out of his defense, Saturday's amazing effort will be just one memorable win instead of a season-saving victory.

I was there and saw a defense that looked like a high school team against Tech in the first half, but one that held Tech scoreless on six of eight possessions in the second half. It appeared to me that OSU made the halftime adjustments that were necessary and Tech did not. Also, it appears that Leach is as crazy as a sack of ferrets. I am an OSU homer, and a donor, but I left the game feeling very badly for a bunch of Tech kids that were completely failed by their coaches.

Defense? Neither team had a defense! It was a wild ride and a sad loss for Tech and a moral victory for OSU......and they needed a W.
But they are gonna get smacked on the road.

Are you kidding me??? Leach should have run the ball to run out the clock??? Did you ever see Tech run the ball for positive yards last night? If he made a mistake, it was not throwing over the top of the linebackers in the middle of the field more.
Way to take a hard fought win by the Cowboys and call it lucky. You are bitter and it shows.

Way to find the negatives, in an otherwise positive game! When OSU has a chance to win at the end of games, do you call the other team lucky? Was OU lucky to win last season in Stillwater? Try harder next time.

You gotta admit that Tech got lucky several times, too. Simple example: we handed them a touchdown at the end of the 1st half, we could have run out the clock for a 7 point swing, or much better we could have thrown a decent pass and scored, which would have been a 14 point swing. There are breaks throughout the game and focusing on the one at the end may seem right, but in reality they all count.

Sittler,
Breaks! Both teams got breaks in this game. But your paper reported elsewhere today that Ricky Price barely touched the ball that Crabtree missed in the endzone. I call that making your own breaks and you would too if you were reporting on an OU game. As for Leach, the mad pirate only knows how to throw the ball.

Fedora's excellent play calling? Huh?
As proud I was of that victory, I was aghast when OSU opted to throw the long ball at the end of the first half when tied 28-28. It essentially gifted Tech time to go score -- it died -- and take the lead.
OSU had ample time to drive the field for a score and knew it would get the ball to begin the second half. The chance for a 10- or 14-point lead was aborted, in great part, by Fedora's "excellent play caling."
Come on, Dave. I love you, man, but you're off the mark on this one.

The only way to settle this argument of "was it the offense or the defense" is to allow your Sooners the opportunity to play both teams, then see what are the outcomes. I am looking forward to seeing Venables having a chance to school Tim Beckman on how to stop Tech, then to give him a chance to stop oSu. I will anxiously await your analysis on both games. . . right here.

Leach's bad call (throwing three times instead of running the clock) pales in comparison to Gundy going for it on fourth down near mid-field with seven minutes left in the game ...

You suck Sittler. We won period. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts Tulsa would have beaten OU. Get over it. The defense stopped Tech from scoring 6 out of 8 times in the second half. That is what saved the game.

I get it dave, we are not supposed to win games against teams like Tech. They lose, we never win.
Oh and good job on calling out our cordinators after a win...classy move Dave.

Crabtree dropped the ball that would have won the game. Otherwise, not one play defines this game. Both coaches made bad decisions and they both made good ones too. This was the best "W" for Gundy, and has lifted up every OSU fans' spirits! You can't dis on OSU's D because they did perform well in the second half, and Tech's offense is mechanically precise although unbalanced. Hooray for the Pokes! Its good to have some Orange Power.

Give Dave a break. Mike Gundy ripped into his girlfriend Jenny Carlson.
Granted it was a great defensive play by Ricky Price to dive in front of Crabtree to change the view of the ball. But hey, we all know if this would have been an OU game, Dave would be celebrating the incredible defensive turnaround in the 2nd half

I thought Tech got nearly all the breaks:
a. When under extreme duress in the first half, Harrell heaves a prayer deep ball that Crabtree turns into a sure TD
b. The interception at the end of the first half was a virtual Tech gift. At worst it should should habe been tied at halftime.
c. TT puts the ball on the ground on a second half kickoff, and it rolls out of bounds with TT touching it.
d. We got two bad spots on back to back 3rd down chances that went against us. I overcame one on a 4th down try and not the other.
The implication that the breaks went just one way, is silly.

Let's give the Pokes a little credit where credit is due. The won the game and both teams got breaks.....If I didn't know better, I would think you were from Lubbock.

OSU won because Seth Newton threw a touchdown pass to Broadway on a trick play.
That makes as much sense as saying the game was lost on that last drop by Crabtree.
This is the kind of journalism OSU fans have come to expect from you.

Nathan Peterson sacked Harrell as many times yesterday afternoon as he's been sacked in the first 3 games. Wow, how did Nathan get so lucky? Maybe Harrell just stood there so #13 could flatten him. Pathetic story.
