NORMAN — Oklahoma might have found its formula for success in Bedlam wrestling.

For the second consecutive season inside OU's McCasland Field House, the Sooners did the necessary things Sunday to pull out an 18-15 triumph over No. 9 Oklahoma State.

After going 27 consecutive Bedlam bouts without a team victory, No. 20 OU has now won the last two meetings.

"We're certainly not proud of our (overall) Bedlam record, but we are proud of two wins in a row over a great program like that," OU coach Jack Spates said.

"I'm proud of our guys. Bedlam is a funny meet. It's an emotional experience and it does things to people that makes you sit back and shake your head."

Spates and his OSU counterpart, John Smith, left the 159th Bedlam battle shaking their heads for various reasons.

For Spates, it was the victories by 125-pounder Joey Fio and 184-pounder Pat Flynn. Fio, whose win at 125 pounds over Tyler Shinn last February sparked OU's first Bedlam win in 13 years, was unable to generate any offense against OSU's Obe Blanc. Tied at 1-all in the second 30-second tiebreaker period, the OU sophomore got an escape with 13 seconds left to pull a 2-1 win.

"It was not pretty, but I got myself a win," Fio said. "As we found out, three (team) points was a big difference."

Flynn, according to Spates, looked "half asleep" sitting on the bench leading up to his match.

But the OU sophomore was simply preparing himself mentally to face Jared Shelton.

When Flynn took the mat, his mental work paid off.

Flynn scored a late first-period takedown and recorded a 5-point move late in the second period for a 7-2 win that gave OU an 18-9 lead.

The Sooners were able to hold on after OSU's Clayton Foster and Jared Rosholt picked up wins at 197 and heavyweight.

Outside of those triumphs, there was nothing pleasant about Sunday's result for the Cowboys.

Shinn had to default his 133-pound match to David Armstrong midway through the second period with an injury to his right collarbone.

Other results left Smith less than pleased and had the OSU coach vowing to make lineup changes.

"This team can't afford to give up six points at (133). I didn't care for the way we competed today," Smith said.

"Very disgusting with the way we lost and how we lost. Looked like we were dragging in the third period of some key matches. Just unacceptable. Period. I'll be surprised if you see that team together again."
