Questions and Answers: OSU basketball Opening
Money provided by boosters like Boone Pickens (above left) could help OSU athletic director Mike Holder land a top-notch men’s basketball coach. Holder talked to Kansas coach Bill Self about the opening at his alma mater last week, but Self, who guided KU to the national championship this season, chose to remain with the Jayhawks. Oklahoma State lost a basketball coach, tried to hire a new one and is in the Plan B phase of the search for Sean Sutton's successor. Following are questions and answers related to OSU basketball:
Q: How soon will athletic director Mike Holder make a hire?
A: Holder didn't wait long -- two days after the national title game -- to meet with Bill Self. The search would be over if Self wanted the job. Indications are that Holder will prioritize other candidates on his wish list and get moving, but he would rather win a mini-marathon than finish fourth in a sprint.
Q: OSU is conducting its first search for a head basketball coach in this millennium. What has changed since the last millennium?
A: This is how much the lay of the land is different in Stillwater.
In 1990, after basketball coach Leonard Hamilton departed, then-athletic director Myron Roderick told the Tulsa World that he doubted OSU could afford to hire an established Division I coach or a rising star in the profession.
OSU came out smelling like a rose nonetheless because the Cowboys didn't have to bust the piggy bank to hire established alum Eddie Sutton, who immediately breathed life into the hoops program.
Now, with Boone Pickens and a surplus of basketball supporters as tag-team partners, OSU seemingly has the resources to pursue most anyone it wants. This is not 1990.
Q: OSU's first target was Self, a former Cowboy player and assistant coach. Here's a what-if: Would Self still have found a way to rise to coaching stardom if Oral Roberts University hadn't taken a chance on him in 1993?
A: ORU was Self's first head coaching job. Self took ORU from 5-22 to the NIT in four years, then guided Tulsa and Illinois to Elite Eights before winning a national championship at Kansas.
Self's body of work suggests he would have found a way to a big-time stage even if ORU had gone another direction back in '93. Other finalists for the job Self got were Lonnie Spencer, Tim Carter, Doc Sadler and John Shumate.
Richard Roberts was ORU's president when the hire was made. Roberts chose not to comment last week when asked why he chose Self.
Q: Eddie Sutton told a reporter in San Antonio that Sean Sutton will get back in the game. What should Sean Sutton look for when trying to secure his next job?
A: Sean Sutton spent 17 of the last 18 seasons at OSU as a player, assistant coach or head coach. He spent the "other" season as an assistant at Mississippi. Sutton was once asked what he learned during his year at Ole Miss. He said you need a good homecourt advantage in order to have a good job.
Sean Sutton got the kind of buyout that will allow him to take his time when looking for a new homecourt advantage.
Q: If a strong candidate with OSU ties was on the horizon, might that candidate have a leg up on the competition?
A: Holder is big on the OSU brand. He refers to alums as "one of us." But, other than Self, is there another former Cowboy who has can't-miss credentials?
Master orator and former Missouri State coach Barry Hinson's resume would look considerably better if the NCAA Selection Committee used solely the RPI to select at-large teams for tournament fields. Regardless, Holder is more interested in selecting the right coach than hiring a coach who can "win" an introductory press conference. Holder values the big picture over initial approval.

Typical softball questions for head HOMER. How about asking these next time:
1. Since, it appears, the complete over reaction and harsh treatment of Sean Sutton (who most consider an insider) will prevent any top tier coach and probably most mid tier coaches from applying, what are you going to do?
2. How are you going to convince any coach they will have a year or two to modify the program and players to fit their style of coaching? Particularly since, you did not give that luxury to Sean Sutton

Sean was as close to a failure as you will find. He seemed to not have the skills to continously motivate his players. Perhaps if he had been required to earn his job, rather than gaining it through masterful use of nepotism, he would have learned it as he progressed up the ladder.
Nepotism is an ugly thing and shame on Eddie for using it.

Sean was perfect for OSU and had the team moving in the right direction. As this past team matured, they were motivated and playing as good at times at the National Champions, whom they beat.
I would have loved to have seen Sean coach this Cowboy squad next year, who undoubtedly would have easily made the Big Dance.
I hope Holder can make a GREAT hire, but he really hasn't done anything "great" since his arrival... not ticket prices, not moving the students in Basketball AND Football, and not dismissing a great head coach who was undoubtedly making much more progress than the football team who have never beaten the national champions... not even close (since our other favored Son took over that program).
Needless to say, I am more than a little disappointed in the way things have unfolded in Stillwater the past 3 years.

Maybe OSU needs an Athletic Director that understands "team" sports instead of individual sports.
We lose coaches that we didn't want to lose, and keep coaches too long that we didn't want to keep, but we can't get rid of Holder the Golf Guy. Sean would have made it next year.

YES YES YES #4!!!
Finally someone is getting close to "THE REAL PROBLEM".
For ALL of you Cowboys, I want to appologize for seeming desrespectful but I have, for a week now, been poking and proding trying to get anyone to see that. And ya' I am not the best at doing this. (just seems to make everyone mad at me). But, let's leave it this way. Holder is a REAL problem, in my view, and the money has made it worse.
Anyways, applogies and good luck, I really think you guys need it. 'God

One more thing Pokes. I bet if someone sent a REAL reporter over therer to ask some GOOD/HARD/REAL questions, Holder would colapse from the pressure, so the TW does not help any of you by asking him "smokin' the bullcrap bong" questions.
Why spend the time unless Tbone and TW are connected in some incestuous way. Know what I mean?

OK, what is it about complete failure some of you folks don't understand? OSU head coach is NOT!!! an affirmative action program for the incompetent. He will never have better talent than he had and their skills deteriorated under Seans leadership. He's a good assistant coach. Remember Sam Aubrey? Nice guy, great assistant, lousy head coach.
Also, the last 3 years consisted of what? Eddie getting drunk and Sean attempting to be a head coach
Some of you folks are obviously jealous of anybody who is successful support unsuccessful dolts like Sean.
NEPOTISM IS ALMOST ALWAYS A DISASTER AND IS ALWAYS UNETHICAL!!!!!
End of story.
NEW STORY
Cowboys will be at least 10-3 next year.

OSU has to realize that history will repeat itself. Think of all the years before Eddie took over without a losing season. Sean may not have been the answer but deserved more of a chance considering how they've handled Gundy. OSU with Holder and Pickens in charge are destined for years of downfalls and losing seasons. It is crooked what's happening up in Stillwater and sad that money is taking it's toll on college athletics as well. OSU can have all the money in the world but until they have intelligent people running the show again, they're a complete joke of a program.

Hey all I can say is that I hear OSU fans all the time saying that all OU fans are bandwagoners.. Well guess what the wheels have fallen off the wagon up in Stillwater and I"ll bet they leave in droves. TBOONE and Holder are incompetent. Tboone and more money than sense and Holder is a puppet. Say what you will about OU but they've got more going for them in Norman than OSU will ever dream of.

#10- you make a good point, but I think the difference right now is that OSU has never really had a bandwagon. The discontent that Holder (Pickens?) has caused over the last few years now reaches deep into the donor base. Many long time fans that have supported OSU through thick and thin are fed up. I predict home attendance in football this year will be an embarrasment, particularly in Club Level, which was never high to begin with.

It is ridiculous to think Sean didn't get a chance. He coached their for the last decade. We have had three disappointing years in a row, should we wait for a fourth than a fifth??? Plus, you can rag on Holder all you want but the reason you haven't heard a big outcry from the other Suttons is they know there was more to the story, more than the Tulsa World and Daily Joklahoman would published out of respect to the Suttons. Sean got off easy, three years paid for nothing and no bad press.

#10- you have good points, but you have seriously bad points! Yes, OU has more. More NCAA investigations, more fines, and more problems, and more want- to- be coaches possing as fans. Holder has made a mistake, I do believe Sean deserved 1 more year. As far as Pickens... People who aren't Cowboy fans are just jealous no one is donating that kind of money to their university! Cowboy fans can have a problem with it, everyone else is just jealous! Cowboys will land on their feet. How can they not with incredible facilities, fans, and more!

HOlder is nothing more than a puppet for BOone and they are both jealous of the the university being nationally known because of the suttons. #12 says that 3 disappointing years is enough. Well if he thinks that 39-29 for Sean compared to 18-19 and a conference record of 8-16 for Gundy is not disappointing. GUndy gets an extension after that crap. He is safe because he is Boone's boy and Sean is fired after beating the national champs because of his last name. WOW! GUndy is a joke and has a record against the big boys(TExas, OU, A&M) is 0-9.

Read the Yahoo article on OSU and T-Boone. It sums it up perfectly. There is not a single top-tier coach who will come to OSU because they don't want to be owned by Pickens. Pickens is our worst enemy when it comes to getting a big-name coach.
