Gundy: Reid got a fair shot
By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

Last Modified: 4/13/2008 3:18 AM
Gundy responds to the ex-QB's interview with ESPN.com, where Reid criticizes his former coach.
STILLWATER -- In an interview with ESPN.com, former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid says coach Mike Gundy's infamous September tirade "basically ended my life" and was a factor in Reid's decision to leave the Cowboy football program.
'Our relationship after that kind of faded away," Reid told ESPN.com. "When that rant happened, I was like, 'Blugggh, I don't think this is for me anymore.' "
After two games last season, Reid was benched by Gundy. Reid had been the veteran of 20 career starts. His replacement, Zac Robinson, went on to break the school record for single-season total of fense and led OSU to an Insight Bowl victory over Indiana.
On Saturday, following OSU's Orange-White spring game, Gundy said he had not read the ESPN.com story, but is familiar with its content.
"When you're in a situation like that, nothing good is going to come out of it," Gundy said. "You have a young man (Reid) who wanted to be the quarterback. You can say what you want, but he got beat out.
"We make decisions on who gives us the best chance to win. I don't care who it is. I don't really see what the issue is. I guess there are some concerns on (Reid's) side that he didn't get a fair chance. I hate that he would feel that way. We put a guy (Robinson) in that had earned it, and then he never gave the job up."
Reid now is a senior quarterback at Texas Southern, a Division I-AA program. In January 2004, he arrived in Stillwater as perhaps the most nationally renowned quarterback recruit in OSU football history. In December, Reid graduated with a degree in education.
In the ESPN story, Reid's mother, Rajika Reid, was critical of Gundy: "Being 40 doesn't make you a man. It's your character that makes you a man. Your integrity. That's what makes you a man. Not how old you are. I read a Chinese proverb one time in a restaurant, and it said, 'A fool at 40 is a fool always.' That tells you everything."
Robinson made his first home start in a 49-45 victory over Texas Tech. Following the game, Gundy used his press conference to angrily renounce an Oklahoman newspaper column that the coach felt was unfairly critical of Reid. Gundy's rant ("Come after me? I'm a man! I'm 40!") has been viewed more than 1.5 million times on the YouTube Web site.
Reid told ESPN.com that he felt Gundy's press conference "was all a big show. It didn't feel genuine."

Reid wasn't the spread offense type of QB. Unfortunately, he should have just moved on and been happy he got a degree. Sounds like OSU is better off without him.

Wow. The ESPN article is a must reid! Bobby's mama said it best, "A fool at 40 is a fool always." Gundy is an absolute joke.

The issue isn't whether Reid was the right QB for the offense or OSU is better off without him. It's about what a phony Gundy is and how contrived his tirade against Jenni Carlson was. Gundy is indeed a fool. He's the one OSU would be better off without.

If Gundy was acting then I think he should move to Hollywood. He didn't need to do that for Reid and in fact he would have been crucified either way. If he did nothing he's not sticking up for his players. it's kinda like Pres. Bush, if you're a democrat you are going to hate the man even if he finds a cure for cancer.
I think a lot of Sooner fans would like to see Gundy gone. Hmm?

Gary, why as Sooner would I want Gundy gone? We beat his butt as a player and we have beaten his butt as a head coach.
I hope he sticks around forever!

Reid get a fair shot? You've got to be kidding... right? Gundy unseated a proven winning QB in Donovan Woods just to make this guy "the future". "The future" went on to lead OSU to a 2-7 record after he was named, "the future". They had to replace him with Al Pena time and again... and yet... kept moving Gundy's "future" back into the starting role week after week... season after season. Few if any get such a "fair shot" at anything. What other coach would sacrafise 3 seasons for one kid that played like a deer in the headlights? Only Gundy.

I agree with richard. I thing Bobby got more than a fair shot. I got tired of watching him half way it through games and not making plays. As for replacing Donovan Woods, Donovan is a great athlete but he could only hit a reciever when he was totally covered. If the man was wide open, the pass was waaay off.
As far as Bobbies mother goes, she should have just kept her mouth shut. Airing personal differences in a public forum is tacky.

Richard is dead on! All I have to say if Troy State. After watching that debcal he (Reid) earned a third string QB position. I believe in Gundy and applaud his heart. This is his year to make the next hurdle or I might start to questioning whether he is really the man for the job.
Congrats to Bobby for graduating and best of luck. It was definately time to move on but it should have been done in a more tasteful manner.

I am sick of people bashing Gundy. TRhe program is headed up and he is doing it the right waY. Will it ever be a top 10 no like about a hundred other xchools. It has and will continue to be competitive in the big 12 and natinally. Reid got a more than fair shot. He is too slow and can't make good decisions under pressure. I really wish it had worked ou but it didn't. There are hundreds of good kids who play sports but aren't always good players. Being a good person does not earn you playing time by itself. Reid will find that out. He will not go to the NFl and soon he will be a working man like most other people. i hope he suceeds as a teacher, but this type of lashing out will never be a good thing.

The article was rather "harsh" in my opinion of Coach Gundy and sounded more like "sour grapes" on a kid who just basically got beat out, plain & simple, by a kid that had more "grit & moxy." Look, I harbor no ill feelings for Bobby Reid. I wish him nothing but the very best in his future. It's a little frustrating he would take a "cheap shot" at Coach Gundy, in this article. I think the article said it best, in that there's a big difference between high school football & not taking "big hits", when your physically a man among boys, then versus being in the Big 12, and making plays happen & taking some "hits." Bottom line, I seriously doubt Reid would have started for any other Big 12 or SEC team, in my opinion, after watching him for 1 1/2 years as the QB. He just didn't make "consistently" good decisions in knowing when to run & not force a pass. Plain & simple, he was beat out for his position!!!!

Although I thought that Jeni Carlson's editorial, regarding Reid, was completely inapropriate and garbage. I thought that it was just complete junk for an OU Alum to slam a young man from OSU.(questionable objectivity)
I have to admit, she may have been right. Bobby Reid was average at quarterback. He jumped ship when he got benched. Now he's on espn slamming Gundy who probably should have benched him earlier.
God forbid Gundy should aggressively defend one of his players at a press conference.
And, Bobby Reid's mom is taking shots at Gundy? I guess Jeni Carlson was right about Reid and his mother.
Gundy benches the below avegage qb. Replaces him with a qb that helps OSU break single season records. Goes to a bowl game and wins. Also, Gundy stands up for his players.(even if they are momma's boys) Not saying that Gundy is perfect, but it looks like he's doing alot of thing right.

Mike, that is classic!! Frank must mean "WE" in the terms of his support and purchase of beers and hot dogs somehow propelled the sooners to victory. I just wish Frank could have showed up during the Gibbs/Blake/Schnellenberger era to get the boys through those dark days. Least he is there now, thak God for Frank. P.S. Reid is a choke artist and a crybaby, mama needs to cut the cord (I wonder if she will key the car of the principal that does not hire him?), and Gundy actually WON a bowl game little bit better than Les Miles could muster for the Pokes. Ayways, Go Hurricane!!!

#13 - Jenni Carlson went to school at KU so there was no "OU alum" slamming Reid. The article would have gone largely unnoticed had Gundy not gone ballistic and made a complete fool of himself. Too bad this didn't happen when MG was 39 - perhaps he would have handled it better.

I really can't stand OSU, Gundy or their halloween colors of orange and black. But, Gundy is getting screwed.
Here is Gundy who goes out on a limb to defend Reid and it ends up in the national media. Now here is Reid and his momma screwing him over on ESPN. Talk about back stabbers. Geez. Sounds like Reid wanted everything handed to him on a silver platter without doing the work. Maybe Reid was going to be a good quarterback, maybe not. But he sure didn’t show it. You can wear a beanie with a propeller on your head, but that don’t make you an astronaut.

That article on ESPNs website comes across as Reid whining in my opinion. He was hurt half the time he was there and then performed poorly half the time he played. In sports, the best player plays, PERIOD! Who wants to argue that Reid was a better QB at OSU than Robinson is now? No one except Reid and his Mom. Ask Paul Thompson about the best player getting the job. He waited THREE years to be OU's QB just to have Bomar beat him out. Did he whine and throw fits and quit the team? No. He sucked it up and moved to receiver and then moved BACK to QB when Bomar got the boot! Reid wants to gripe about Gundy's rant, but how would he have felt if Gundy would have come out and said "Good job, Jenni Carlson. This article is completely true. Bobby is mentally weak, folds under pressure and can't take a hit. We definitely are a better team with Zac in control. I only wish i had seen this coming so i could have named Robinson the starter in the fall so that Bobby would have had time to transfer. His whining and complaining on the sidelines is annoying and distracting. I'm a man, i'm 40, and i'm tired of having to feed my QB chicken at the training table. You have hands, Bobby, use them!"

#5 Frank...thank you very much. We all know that Gundy is extremely in over his head. The Sooner fans love him because he is no threat. Never has been, never will be...I am still laughing at the remark gary made. Why would ANY Sooner fan want Gundy fired. He is not even qualified to be a O-Coordinator at OU. Bob Stoops wins road games - Gundy does NOT!!

What a Mamas boy, grow up junior and move on,you could'nt cut the mustard on the field in conversions or quarterback aptitude and management.I stood by you as a fan until I saw your immature behavior on the sidelines after you were shown the bench.Robinson's was definitely the right one as the starter.Apparently you and your Mom drank too much of the charisma kool-aid they poured you in high school.Hope you enjoy Div. 1-AA flag football.

#19 As an OSU fan I would love to be in a position like OU is in every year. However, Stoops' teams have not fared well on the road the past couple of years. Last year I believe you lost in Boulder and in Lubbock. I believe you were on the road when you were utterly embarassed at the bowl game. Like I said I am not a hater because the OU program is in good shape. Just don't open your mouth and say retarded things. So go get your baseball Warren.

A coach can't put players in the game out of pity or because in the Mama's eyes her boy is the best.
The harsh reality was and still is - Zak was better.
Reid acts like he wanted to be quarterback real bad - just didn't want it bad enough to work harder to get it. He thought it should be his because his mama said so.
I was proud of gundy for taking up for the boy - maybe if Reid's mama lets him he can be a man by 40 too... but right now that isn't looking good. LOL

So, I don't Gundy's rant was the best thing to do. Could have been handled better, at least with less yelling. Come on, you're 40. Be a man and handle conflict as such. Men can handle conflict without turning it to a screaming match.
That being said, I still hope Bobby Reid does well at Texas Southern but I don't think anyone can argue that we weren't better without him. I didn't think we would be. I even bought a Bobby Reid jersey because I thought he would win the starting spot back. Apparently I was wrong, very wrong. Zac didn't pass for 411 yards in one game, but he had more total yards a few times and broke the total yards record and beat Reid's total passing yards from the previous season. Reid is just upset and has been the star. He hasn't had to deal with this type of rejection yet. He'll grow up and realize how dumb this was. That is assuming that he doesn't just spiral into blaming others. I hope that's not the case.
On another random note, Jamie Dixon for the next OSU basketball coach!

B.R. must not have been thinking. Oh, he got a fair shot. And then he got it shot down. I'm not an OSU fan. I want them to lose every game they play. But Gundy gave him a shot, he stood up for a player that obviously was not grateful, and Gundy never once talked bad about B.R. What an idiot?!?! Even after this article, Gundy has no harsh words to say. Gundy may not be able to coach football, but he seems a like nice guy.
