The defense stayed solid throughout, right up to Lavine's late interception.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Patrick Lavine had seen it before.

This time, the Oklahoma State junior linebacker made sure this game had a different ending and much more pleasing result.

Lavine's interception of Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel's pass at the Cowboys 31-yard line with 1:41 remaining capped the No. 17 Cowboys' stunning 28-23 victory over No. 3 Missouri. But it also exorcised demons of last-second comeback wins by OSU opponents and late meltdowns by Cowboy defenses of past seasons.

"Earlier in the week, everyone said our defense was going to have to step up big," Lavine said. "They said that was going to be the hard point for us.

"What happened tonight just showed who we are."

Daniel got his passing yards — 390 of them, in fact. But he also got to experience something he and the Missouri offense hadn't yet in the Tigers' first five games.

OSU forced Missouri into two punting situations after holding it without a first down.

With Daniel at quarterback, Missouri had 84 consecutive possessions to open the season without having a three-and-out series.

Daniel had one interception entering the game. Lavine's was the third the Cowboys defense had on the night.

Ricky Price had one in the third quarter at the OSU 22 to thwart a Tigers drive. Andre Sexton's 39-yard interception return into Missouri territory set up Damian Davis' 31-yard touchdown with 6:30 left, putting OSU ahead 28-17.

"The kids executed what we called," defensive coordinator Tim Beckman said. "They're just calls and the kids have to perform the calls. I'm proud of the way they did that."
