Bouncing back: Dez Bryant took two bone-jarring hits from Missouri defensive backs in the first half of last week's win.

The physical approach used by Missouri is something Bryant's position coach, Trooper Taylor, would not be surprised to see more the remainder of the season.

"I've never had a kid get up from the blows that Dez took. They went after him," Taylor said. "If people try to continue to do that and take Dez out, we'll need to have others step up and make plays. That happened at Missouri."

Taylor applauded Bryant for staying in the game mentally instead of trying to retaliate.

"He wanted to fight back, but stayed calm," Taylor said. "He told me, 'Even I can't run full speed, they still have to put two guys on me and that'll open the run game.' Now, you got him believing that he doesn't need to get every ball. That's a team player for you."

Turf wars: Saturday's game against Baylor has a little hometown pride at stake for Taylor and junior cornerback/kick returner Perrish Cox.

Taylor was a defensive back at Baylor from 1988-1991 and an assistant coach from 1992-1997. Cox hails from Waco, Texas.

So, for whom is the game bigger?

"If you ask his (Taylor's) opinion, he'll say him," Cox said. "For my opinion, it's me."

More symbols: Tim Beckman's job title is defensive coordinator. He also is a motivator supreme.

Beckman has given out black practice jerseys for worthy defenders. The players also are given an orange chain link, and the game MVP gets to carry a bright orange chain - used to lock up opposing offenses - onto the field for the next game. The defender who has the biggest hit in a game earns a 5-foot stick to carry onto the field.

The latest rewards are dog tags with the letters BEATT ("Ballers Excel All The Time"), which are given to the top defensive lineman, linebacker and defensive back in each game.
