Oklahoma State is looking for a new women's golf coach.

Citing professional and personal reasons, Laura Matthews announced her resignation as the Cowgirls coach Friday afternoon after three seasons. Men's golf coach Mike McGraw will oversee the women's program on an interim basis.

"Over the last three years, I have enjoyed my time working with many wonderful ladies. The standing relationship with my players, both current and future, is the only factor that makes this decision difficult," Matthews said in a released statement by OSU. "I am very proud of the work that was done to make Oklahoma State's women's golf team a national contender again."

Matthews declined additional comment when contacted by the Tulsa World. She did tell Golfweek.com that athletic director Mike Holder "has decided to take the program in a different direction. I'm going to respect his decision, and therefore I'm resigning."

In the statement released by OSU, Holder thanked Matthews for her work at OSU and wished her all the best. Holder did not return a message left for him seeking additional comment Friday evening.

Matthews replaced McGraw in the fall of 2005 after McGraw took the reins of the men's program following Holder's hiring as OSU athletic director. The 28-year-old Matthews took the Cowgirls to three straight NCAA Championship appearances and led them to last year's Big 12 Championship.

The Cowgirls are ranked fifth nationally in the latest Golf World/Women's Coaches poll and are viewed as a national title contender.

The Cowgirls, under the direction of assistant coach Alan Bratton, started play Friday in the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. Behind the 6-under-par 65 from freshman Caroline Masson, the Cowgirls shot 6-under 278 and trail top-ranked UCLA by one shot after the first round of the 54-hole tournament.
