Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith has kept close tabs on the class of 2009 high school wrestling talent in Oklahoma for a few years now.

Smith soon will be the beneficiary of a lot of that talent. On Friday, Smith's OSU program received a commitment from the standout performer of the talented senior class.

Stillwater High School senior 189-pounder Chris Perry gave his verbal commitment to wrestle for the Cowboys. Perry is expected to sign his letter of intent Nov. 12, the first day of the early signing period.

Perry is regarded as one of the top high school wrestlers in the nation. Amateur Wrestling News lists Perry as the No. 1 competitor at the 189-pound weight class. Perry is 97-1 in his three-year high school career and will bring a 65-match win streak into his senior season. Perry projects to wrestle either at 184 or 197 pounds in college.

Wrestling is in Perry's blood. He is Smith's nephew; his father, Mark Perry Sr., was a two-time All-American at OSU in 1984-85; and his older brother, Mark Perry Jr., was a two-time national champion at Iowa.

Perry is not the only high-profile in-state commitment the Cowboys have received. Perry High School seniors Ladd Rupp and Stephen Swan already have pledged to the Cowboys. Rupp, a 119-pounder, is aiming for his fourth straight state title, while the 145-pound Swan seeks his third consecutive title this season.

Catoosa senior 171-pounder Dallas Bailey returned from his official recruiting visit to OSU on Thursday and expects to announce his college plans soon. The three-time state champ has also visited Nebraska and Penn State.
