STILLWATER — Oklahoma State basketball coach Travis Ford said many NBA scouts have been to preseason practices. He said they all leave loving Terrel Harris.
The 4,135 fans who showed up at Gallagher-Iba Arena for an exhibition opener Wednesday night found out why Harris is so darn loveable.
The senior guard collected 32 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals in a 112-75 triumph over Rogers State, the nation's 20th-ranked NAIA club.
All three of Harris' totals would have been career-bests if the game had "counted." Harris' regular season career-highs are 24 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals.
"Incredible stat line," Ford said after Harris made 11-of-16 field goal attempts and 6-of-8 shots from 3-point range. "Terrel is made for this system. He is very good in this."
The system Ford referred to is a warp speed style that helped the Cowboys launch 34 shots from 3-point range (the school record is 34, established last year against North Texas) and finish three points shy of a school record in an exhibition game.
"We still didn't play at the tempo we want to play at," Ford said. "Not even close."
OSU beat Rogers State 62-53 in a regular season game last season.
Harris was 0-for-4 from the field in that game, but Ford said the way Harris played against the Hillcats this time is "par for the course." Ford said Harris has been the team's most consistent player in practice.
Thirteen Cowboys saw action and 10 got at least nine minutes of court time. Harris, Byron Eaton, Obi Muonelo, James Anderson and Keiton Page all accumulated double-digit point totals.
"I give a lot of credit to OSU," Rogers State coach Lloyd Williams said. "I think they are a lot better than they were last year."
Williams predicted the Cowboys will surprise some people in the Big 12 and said Ford's system is perfect match for the players.
"They are so athletic and shoot the ball so well," he said.
Ford was overhead yelling "quit jogging" during the game and, even when his team had a 31-point lead with 3:12 remaining, he urged players to "go, go."
Harris said the game was a cakewalk compared to practices. He meant no disrespect to Rogers State. He was merely making a comment about Ford's grueling practices.
"He demands a lot of you, but it's not too much to handle," Harris said. Whatever he does, we know its out of love and him wanting us to do better."

Wow. I don't want football to end yet but, at least it seems like we have basketball to look forward to as well. Sounds like this is going to be a good year for OSU sports.
Go Pokes!!!

No brakes necessary Snoop. I wasn't commenting on just this article. So far I like all that I've heard Coach Ford say and I share his coaching philosophy of 'relentless pace'. I coach my soccer teams the same way.
