Robinson, Gundy up for honors: Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson has been named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the nation's top college football player.

Mike Gundy, who has taken OSU to an 8-1 record and No. 8 national ranking, is a semifinalist for the George Munger Award, presented each year to the national coach of the year.

Both awards are sponsored by the Maxwell Football Club, and the winner of each will be announced during ESPN's Dec. 11 College Football Awards Show.

Robinson leads the Big 12 and is No. 2 nationally in passing efficiency.

He is also a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, which goes to the national quarterback of the year.

Never give up: Texas Tech left tackle Rylan Reed has a great appreciation for the journey the No. 2 Red Raiders are experiencing this season. In two weeks, Reed will turn 27. Nicknamed "Pops" by his teammates, Reed signed with Arkansas in 2000 but signed a professional baseball contract later that year with the Chicago White Sox.

Three years later, Reed was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system that causes tumors to grow from white blood cells. After beating the disease, Reed decided to give football another try and enrolled at Texas Tech.

Today, he is a part of an offensive line group that has surrendered only five sacks in 444 passing attempts this year.

"It's been unbelievable how everything has worked out. It's almost a perfect story," Reed said. "I couldn't imagine anything like this. I'm a grateful person, I'll tell you that."

Tech's kicking situation: Texas Tech didn't need a field goal late to beat Texas last week. But the question remains who will handle that task for the Red Raiders if one is needed.

Matt Williams gained immediate fame by earning a roster spot after winning an in-game kicking contest earlier this season. He made 2-of-3 field goals last week against the Longhorns and all 13 extra point attempts since being promoted to game action two weeks ago.

But Williams had a 42-yard field goal attempt blocked early in the fourth quarter last week. Donnie Carona, who is just 4-of-9 on field goals, made a 42-yarder later in the fourth quarter.

OSU's kicking situation: OSU kicker Dan Bailey is 9-of-12 on field goal attempts. Two of his misses came from 50-plus yards right before halftime against Missouri State and Texas A&M, respectively.

However, Bailey's longest made attempt is 39 yards against Texas and Iowa State. Gundy, though, believes Bailey can handle a pressure kick.

"He's much better now than he was two weeks ago," Gundy said. "Part of that is going through that experience of playing on the road (at Missouri and Texas) and going through those situations. You can't coach or teach that. You got to go out there and do it."

Hopefully Gundy can win this award and others so people can talk about something besides the tirade last season that every other idiot in America tries to be funny with, but aren't!
