Garrett, Brown return to court

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State could get a boost from two basketball players who were essentially on the injured reserve list with shoulder injuries last season.

Junior guard Brad Garrett played a total of 12 minutes last season. Senior forward Anthony Brown missed the final 16 games.

Both players returned to duty in an exhibition opener against Rogers State, and that qualifies as good news. Said coach Travis Ford, "We are going to need everybody on this basketball team. We have very small room for error."

OSU plays an exhibition finale Saturday against Langston. After a 112-75 win over Rogers State, Obi Muonelo was asked about Garrett and Brown returning to action.

"Brad Garrett, he is a great shooter. He is one of the best shooters I have ever seen," Muonelo said.

"Anthony, when he wants to play, I think he can be one of the best post men in the Big 12 if he just puts his mind to it. I've seen him have days where I am like, 'Man, this guy is a pro.' And then I've seen him have days when he just doesn't feel like playing. If he brings his game, you all will see a real nice Anthony Brown this year."

Garrett played only the final 1:53 against Rogers State because he is recovering from a leg injury. The College of Southern Idaho transfer shot 41.3 percent from 3-point range at the junior college level.

Brown played in 14 games last season and made three starts. He played only nine minutes against Rogers State but was praised.

Said Ford, "I just thought for somebody who didn't play a whole lot the first half, and he was probably wondering 'Why am I not playing?' or 'Man, I wish I had played more,' he could have really sulked and not given it maybe his best effort because he was disappointed. But he came in there and gave us great energy and scored in the post a couple of times."

Getting along: Ford is monitoring attitudes. He wants players to have winning attitudes. He said it is a losing attitude when players argue or pout after a play.

"The way we play, you have got to move on to the next thing," he said.

Test tube: Ford started a four-guard lineup against Rogers State. He has experimented with a five-guard crew in practice that features Muonelo and James Anderson at the four and five spots.

"It has been pretty exciting in practice to watch that team," Ford said. "They are pretty good. We may not ever rebound the basketball with that team."

Showtime: Walk-ons Scott Warner and Garrett Thomas (one of four students to survive an open tryout) played the last 1:32 against Rogers State. "Those guys work their tails off every day," Ford said. "They deserve to get out there when they can."

Ford wishes they could have played more, but he wanted to get scholarship players as much court time as possible because they are learning a new system.
