Brown productive off Cowboys' bench

STILLWATER — Anthony Brown made the transformation from invisible man to sixth man.

Brown never left the bench in Oklahoma State's basketball opener against Texas-San Antonio. But he has logged more duty than any other frontcourt reserve in two games since, helping OSU to a 3-0 start under new coach Travis Ford.

"I didn't think he had been playing well enough to play in that first game, so I didn't play him," Ford said.

Instead of pouting after the opener, Brown went to the gym on his own, according to the coach. Brown dominated the next practice.

Said Ford, "I told him, 'You are going to play.' Then the next day he played even better. So he went from not playing to being the first sub in the game against North Texas and I thought he did well.

"Guys who are on the bench and come in and make multiple mistakes are probably not going to play. But guys who come in and are productive, I am not afraid to put them back in."

Ford said Brown played well again in a win over Tulsa. The 6-foot-6 senior forward enters a Sunday game against Grambling State as OSU's second-leading bench scorer (behind Keiton Page) and top bench rebounder.

"Anthony kept working hard and coaches said his work ethic picked up instead of slacking off," point guard Byron Eaton said.

"Strength-wise, he is definitely going to be able to help us down the road. We are going to need him."

Long time no see: OSU will go three and a half weeks between home games after facing Grambling State.

The Cowboys meet giant-killer Mercer on Dec. 17. Coached by ex-Oklahoma assistant Bob Hoffman, Mercer rocketed to collegerpi.com's top spot following road wins over Alabama and Auburn.

Scouting report: Grambling State is 0-2, including an overtime loss to Louisiana Tech. Former OSU center Kenny Cooper collected 22 points and 11 rebounds against the Tigers.

Dual threat: Grambling State senior forward Jamal Breaux was chosen as the SWAC's preseason defensive player of the year. He doubles as a relief pitcher for the school's baseball team.

Rebound machine: Junior guard Obi Muonelo averaged 3.3 rebounds last season. He is averaging a team-high 8.7 rebounds this season.

"Everybody is going to have to do their share," Ford said, adding that he doesn't have a great rebounder who is going to get 10 boards every night.

"As long as we can do it as a group, I think we can be competitive on the glass. I don't think we are going to lead the Big 12 in rebounding or anything like that, and that is not our goal. We're not going to try to lead the league in rebounding, but we don't want to be last either."
