The Picker: Excuses debunked, state hoops mourned

By THE PICKER

Check out the Picker’s Blog: What's wrong with the OU football team? Media hype.

WITH OU AND OSU off this week, we started to write about the Big Four college basketball outlooks, became despondent 10 minutes into the project, decided to move on.

As college football's most entertaining season ever turns toward the home stretch, few championship contenders will lose on merit.

There will probably be extenuating circumstances.

Here are the top 15 excuses for losing a big ball game.

15. Busted assignments got us.

(This usually means the other team was much quicker and better.)

14. Tall grass got us.

13.The heat got us.

12. The altitude got us.

11. The cook got us.

(Excuses 11, 12 and 13 probably have more to do with a lack of conditioning, or too much stomach, caused by too many turnovers of the apple variety, than anything else.)

10. The sun got us.

9. Football (not apple) turnovers got us.

(This excuse is universally given by contenders one and all, even if the opposing team drove 60 in four plays after a turnover; turnovers don't get you until your defense has failed to make a play.)

8. The starting time got us.

(Don't they still have 8 a.m. classes in college?)

7. Final exams got us.

6. The media got us.

5. Travel got us.

4. The dew point got us.

3. Complacency got us.

2. The refs got us.

1. The wind got us.

(Yes, it is a true freak of nature, sometimes the wind only blows when one of the teams is on offense.)

The Picks

THURSDAY

Boston College at Virginia Tech (-3): Everybody says here comes another upset.

Guess what -- the team ranked the highest (BC) is a solid underdog, proving once again that most polls are fiction.

Tech by 6.

SATURDAY

SMU at Tulsa (-14): This or raking leaves?

This.

But it's not the slam dunk it used to be.

TU is favored 14 -- for it to win by that, the defense is going to have to figure out how to hold somebody in the mid-thirties.

NCAA death penalty handed Mustangs in 1776 still seems troubling.

TU by 15.

Kansas (-3) at Texas A&M: Get the smelling salts: Kansas a top 10 basketball and football school!

The Nebraska football coach is good at one thing -- taking heat off people like Aggie coach Frannie.

KU by 1.

Colorado at Texas Tech (-13): Altitude (lack) could get Buffs.

Also troubling are the seemingly thousands of passes knocked down by opposing linemen.

Tech by 17.

USC at Oregon (-2-1/2): What's not to like about USC being in tough?

Oregon by 3.

Arizona at Washington (-3-1/2): Zona seems to have given Stoops about 25 last chances to do something, anything.

Wild offenses appear to have left another defensive genius gasping.

Washington by 3.

Georgia at Florida (-10): SEC winner should get an automatic pass to the national title game, the conference is that strong.

Also, the SEC probably has the top three Heisman candidates.

Florida by 13.

Nebraska at Texas (-22): Hillbillies pick up bottles from highway shoulders and bet it all on Tex.

Texas by 30.

South Carolina at Tennessee (-3): These SEC also-rans could finish 1-2 in Big Ten.

Vol fans again stuck with Fulmer because of just enough wins? Tennessee by 6.

Ohio State (-4) at Penn State: Don't adjust your set, these teams really are that slow.

But they are smart -- the league has no playoff.

JoePa fires up squad with leather helmet stories.

Ohio State by 7.

SUNDAY

Indianapolis (-6) at Carolina: Tough spot for Indy.

Tougher for Carolina.

Indy by 7.

Detroit at Chicago (-5-1/2): Munsters of the Midway.

Chicago by 6.

Eagles (-1) at Minnie: The Viking coach must be saving Peterson for the Letterman show.

Minnie by 4.

Jacksonville (-2) at Tampa Bay: Retirement Bowl.

Tampa by 2.

Washington at New England (-16-1/2): See if Washington has any intelligence to be insulted by huge point spread.

New England by 17.

MONDAY

Green Bay at Denver (-2): Denver's minor sport this year.

Favre shows about four-fifths of his age.

Denver by 5 .

USC at Oregon (-2-1/2): What's not to like about USC being in tough?

WHAT THE HECK DOES THIS MEAN?!

Arizona at Washington (-3-1/2): Zona seems to have given Stoops about 25 last chances to do something, anything.

Wild offenses appear to have left another defensive genius gasping.

STOOPS HAS BEEN A HUGE BUST AT 'ZONA.

I'M SURE MANY SWOONERS WOULD WANT HIM BACK...until the first loss. Then, they'd torch him, calling him an Arizona loser.

Silly, rabid Swooners.

Your "Excuses debunked..." section only proves that you've never played a down of football in your life. Actually, you've probably never stepped foot on a football field - unless it was as a band member, or perhaps as part of the pom squad.

" JoePa fires up squad with leather helmet stories." ahahahaha

Yeah, I predict a ton of defensive OU fans ranting. I'm so sick of this wind talk....excuses excuses

Rob was a water boy that lived for his coaches excuses, or he played at Booker T.

Bob, people who live in Missouri shouldn't throw stones...at anyone...for anything.(ever)

Someone in Missouri discussing football is kind of like someone in Wyoming discussing the finer attributes of surfing. In other words, stick to what you know.

What does not having played a down of football have to do with anything? You don't have to have played a game to be able to watch it and have opinions. I have never been president but I will vote in the election for one.

Rob - the picker never claimed to have played football. He's only suggested from time to time that he enjoys getting people's feathers ruffled that take him too seriously.

Danny - even sportswriters can make an omission or a typo.

The Picker's constant sucking up to the SEC is becoming a bore; actually, it became a bore long ago. In spite of his rare witticisms that register true, this act is wearing mighty thin.

First of all Max, it's no wonder you're jumping into the fray - seeing that you're in the SEC - the greatest football conference in the history of the sport, and one that should (according to The Picker) have an automatic pass to the BCS Championship Game.

Everyone has opinions, it's true. However the best opinions come from those who have experience with the subject matter. The so-called "Excuses" listed, as well as the debunkment claims don't hold water. The majority of those "excuses" are actual situations/conditions that CAN and DO impact the outcome of a game.

For one, weather conditions ARE a factor that can cause more problems for one team than another. I can give numerous examples to support this fact. (however, I won't unless asked)

Being President and voting in the election are 2 totally different animals - wouldn't you agree? What you're saying (Max) is kind of like saying, "I'm an Accountant and have never performed Neurosurgery, but my opinion on Neurosurgery is just as relevant as a Neurosurgeon's."

Under Tom O'Brien, at least 9 of your 15 excuses would be proffered BEFORE the game. This so as to protect O'Brien from any criticism for falling short.

This is a very different Boston College team. Jagodzinski mocking the questions about Lane Stadium. No excuses offered. Better conditioning. More aggressive strategy. Trusting smart players to run an intelligent game plan.

Sorry, but "Lane Stadium" doesn't rush for 200 yards, nor does "Blacksburg" throw for three touchdowns. BC wins, just as they did last year.

Just because I live in Louisiana does not mean I am an SEC fan. I was born and raised in Oklahoma and spend a lot of time defending the Big 12. If this column were limited only to those who have played the game it would probably be cancelled due to lack of readership.

Conference loyalties aside, the point is that; all opinions are NOT equal.

Informed opinion > Uninformed opinion

That everyone is allowed to have an opinion, doesn't make those opinions equal.

Tennessee just cant crawl back up that mountain to the top. You dont really here a lot from there fans, are they content with middle of the pack? I mean even if the vols were 9-3 it would prob be good enough. Do they really care?

Also, you never know with Georgia. Either way they would win the Big 10. Another top 10 excuse is "we were just Vanilla on offense"

Note: I just asked ten people about the Va Tech/BC game tonight. All ten said Va Tech would cover, would win by more than three!

Congatulations to Va Tech. Best choke since Minn/T-Tech game.

How many interceptions did VT drop? How many fumbles did they miss? Excellent good hands people up front for the on side also.

BC has a good quarterback and a good defense, VT has a good defense. Neither team is top ten material. Maybe no one is.

Looks like kids day in the comments section.

Rob, Tulsa (10/26/2007 6:53:12 AM)
Were those 10 people randomly selected, or did they all go to school in Blacksburg? By the way, that's quite a feat - it's hard to get 5 people to agree on anything, much less 10(11) people who get the same question wrong!

That first VT touchdown should not have counted - by the time he had control of the ball, his feet never touched the ground in the endzone.

If not for the BC heroics in the last 2+ minutes, that blown call by the Refs could have cost BC the game and their National Championship hopes.

I guess this is a clear case of the better team winning. (no "excuses", right?)
