The latest on this story:
Rice band director apologizes for performance during Tulsa game
The University of Tulsa has sent a formal complaint to Conference USA regarding Rice's halftime show during the Golden Hurricane-Owls football game on Saturday.
The performance by the Rice marching band was titled "Todd Graham's Inferno" and depicted a search for the former Owls coach through different circles of Hell, based on Dante's "Divine Comedy."
After taking numerous jabs at Graham, the show ended by calling the Tulsa coach a "d-----bag" over the public address system.
"We filed a formal complaint with the conference and that's where it stands now," TU athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. "I talked to their AD (Chris Del Conte) this morning. Our conversation was very cordial and he said to
do what we thought was appropriate."
Cunningham couldn't hear the performance in the press box, but caught the final moments when he was walking to the field.
When asked what he wanted the complaint to accomplish, Cunningham said, "We need to provide an environment where a student-athlete can participate and fans can enjoy college athletics in a very positive way."
Sportsmanship has been a point of emphasis in C-USA, the Tulsa athletic director said.
"When we don't meet those standards, we need to look at ourselves as a league and find how we can make that experience better," he said.

This was a very tastless performance by the Rice band. I could not believe my eyes and ears. TU fans were shocked.
But by the end of the game we let Coach Graham know that we had his back. Chanting - TODD GRAHAM, TODD GRAHAM

The fact is, Todd Graham is--unfortunately--a d--bag. It is a tragic statement of fact. He engaged in outrageously bad faith negotiations with Rice (and, frankly, TU); told several calculated, intentional lies; and generally demonstrated extremely poor character and an utter lack of integrity. It is one thing to take more money to go some place else. Those who think that is what this is about completely miss the point, as it is entirely another thing to lie, use, and defraud people--including young men who trusted him--for personal gain.
As for the Rice band, they have every right (and a long tradition) to make a joke out of the guy, or, actually, to simply point out what a joke he made of himself. Sportsmanship is important, and nothing that the band (it's a band, please get over yourselves) did wasn't in that spirit. What's more important is instilling student athletes with a sense of character, duty, and honor. What lessons has Todd Graham taught his athletes with his shameful behavior? That your word means nothing; that character, honesty, and integrity mean nothing; and that taking advantage of a situation through any dishonest means possible is completely acceptable. Talk about shocking and offensive, that's where the TU community should be looking.

hey rice homer get off your high, holier-than-thou horse. Todd Graham never wanted to coach at Rice, who would? You have an aging hole of a stadium, a fanbase that appearently besides you and your band could give a crap, and an administration with little commitment to athletics. Coach Graham took the job thinking that in a few years a better would open up for him, well sue him that Coach K took off one year later and Tulsa hired him back. A senior led team, stadium renovations underway, a new athletic faculty built, and a president and new AD who want to win championships. So get off his back with your so-called moral-fiber BS. He did what he thought was right for him, his family, and his career and he does not deserve to be called a douchbag by your stadium PA announcer. You should be thankful that this story is not getting much bigger than it already is, because this really makes your university look bad; being as they are supposely such a high academic institution. He was with Rice for a year and they finally want to a bowl game you should kiss his backside for that token, because your never going back until many years down the road, if you still play football.

I think TU's "senior-led" team may solidify TG's decision at the end of this season to go to another "opportunity". I'll be interested to see what TG backers say when he bolts TU for Georgia Tech in a few weeks.
TG does not stand for character, integrity and honesty. Let's face it.

he wouldn't be the first to leave TU for greener pastures and he won't be the last. WE are willing to accept that fact. Are Rice fans??? I think we got that answer on saturday.

Todd Graham is a despicable human being and should not be around college athletes. The MOB (Marching Owl Band) was too easy on him.
Todd was negotiating the extension to his Rice contract while he excused himself for stomach problems so he could call Tulsa. He lied to Rice administation several times and to several alums who had made major contributions at his request. All this would be forgivable when you consider the business aspect of college football, but he also lied (unnecessarily) to the players. That was unforgivable. We learned that Todd is a world class liar and treats his football players like dirt. He has only one goal and that is feeding his oversized ego and stuffing his pockets. I pity you Tulsa fans if this is who you want leading your young athletes.
Todd got off light. I can think of a lot of things I would like to call him.
Save your whining until he sticks it to you.

, why didn't TG prep TU well for the UCF game II (12/3/2007 12:37:10 PM)
TG and TU seemed to be NOT PREPARED AT ALL to play in as loud an atmosphere as there was at the CUSA champ game on saturday at UCF, they had 4 or 5 illegal procedures and wasted 3 or 4 time outs due to the noise generated by US, the UCF fans (I LOVE aluminum and steel stadium), when TU was on offense, at times it was as loud as at the TEXAS vs OU game in the Cotton Bowl, i.e. ear bleeding loud. and TG and his coaching crew seemed stunned that it was that loud, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS JUST AS LOUD ON OCT 20th WHEN UCF STOMPED A MUDHOLE IN TU's BACK THE FIRST TIME. There is NO EXCUSE for TU not being ready to play in a noisy atmosphere, NONE AT ALL.
TG's deficient "coaching" also cost TU a TD when they got CAUGHT with 12 men on the field and the TD got called back. I attribute that one to the noise also.
I predict that TG, if he has any sucess at TU will pull another Dennis Francione and depart for "greener pastures" and leave TU in the lurch.

The truth hurts, that idiot that can't read a road maps makes Tulsans look like idiots. If you're too stupid, which you obviously are, to tell then you're an idiot. Go to Wal-Mart and buy a 6 pack of brains, then start off easy with grade school all over again. Maybe you'll succede this time but I doubt it! Stop crying and grow up, your coach is a douche bag, your university is a joke, and your football team keeps loosing and loosing to any quality opponent! Yepp, you're an idiot!

To #59, The music ensembles at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University far surpass any musical ensemble TU will ever have. As for the quality of TU's band, multiple high schools in the Tulsa Metropolitan area are stronger bands than TU"s is. Whoever you are "Tulsa Kid" your knowledge of this subject is incorrect. TU is not in the league of academics nor does TU have the reputation of excellence Rice University does. Rice is the premier private university of the southwest.

What a bunch of sissies Tulsa is. Go tell your mommy someone was mean. Tulsa's actions interfering with a binding contract with coach Graham are probably still legally actionable, but you cry like brownies who dropped their cookies if someone takes a shot at you. Pathetic. Before I just thought Tulsa was a mediocre, boring school. Now I know it to be a mediocre, boring, spineless school.

"a real band like TU's"?????
oh please, them 12 people in them silly uniforms? did TU bring their whole band to UCF? if they did, it's absolutely tiny. and not too good, they did have that University of Texas fight song (we have several) March Grandioso down pretty dang good (well half of it at least) but for some reason the TU "band" quit playing it halfway through when I started doing the TEXAS FIGHT spell out and yell with the appropriate hook'em hand signals REAL LOUD. I was sitting right next to them and I know they could hear me ( because it was one of the few times when TU was doing something that it was quiet in the stadium). what the heck was that stopping halfway through the song all about, can't that band learn a whole song? very odd they was. BTW the MOB knows ALL the notes to March Grandioso, ever last one of 'em and THEY don't quit halfway through, neither.
You know after seeing TG coach, I'm glad he ain't at Rice no more. For some reason UCF seemed to know exactly what play TU was gonna run and what defense they were in, I wonder if it had anything to do with TU's absurd signaling system of HOLDING UP NUMBERS TO SIGNAL THE PLAYS AND DEFENSES FOR EVERYBODY IN THE STADIUM TO SEE.

Mike in Tulsa,
The MOB named Tulsa as the tenth level of Hell, because I believe they took a trip to Tulsa a few years ago. They're fully qualified to make that statement.
(Also, I believe one or more of them may now be banned from the ORU campus for trying to climb the praying hands...)

Scatter method is great for an occassional effect or for tiny schools that cannot field a real band. Of course, lazy band directors with undisciplined bands rely on it quite heavily, too. Maybe if Rice used a real band like TU's as a standard for performance instead of SNL, they might have something. Of course, they must first cultivate some maturity, a cool head and a clear eye. But the good news is, mob members, many of you will grow up, eventually, and when you do you can escape the sophomoric environment that utilizes filth, bathroom humor, name calling, bad sportsmanship and bitterness as methods and motivations for making one's self feel worthy.

59 - From the way I see it, Stanford isn't tiny and they field a pretty 'real' scatter band.
C'mon people, how is this news? Didn't the Yale band drop their pants at West Point during a halftime show once? So what if a scatterband insults someone, it isn't like this is the first time it's happened...

Sorry Cartography but you fail. A simple internet search will tell you that Interstate 45 used to be called Interstate 75 but was changed. In essence it is the same highway.
Per wikipedia... The first freeway in Texas was a several-mile stretch of US 75 (now I-45)--The Gulf Freeway, opened to Houston traffic on October 1, 1948.. Oh and you are the fool and you are from Tulsa.

"Sammy from MOBvania, you're an idiot. The numbers are offensive signals. And oh yeah, 600 yards and 48 points...we could probably tell your defense we were throwing the ball deep to Marion and he'd still run by all of them. You shouldn't talk trash about football when it's debatable if Rice could beat a good Texas HS team like Southlake!""
uh, what? I am not an Owl, duh!
oh and scoreboard, 44-23, with another pasting to be administerd by my team on your team come this Sat. at noon eastern time.
and as to them numbers, offensive signals, eh? your coaches were holding them up at the game while UCF was on OFFENSE, that would mean that TU was on DEFENSE, maybe that was part of the problem.
oh, and why didn't L, S, and A get to come to Disney world? were they bad or something?
one other thng, as far as the D'bag being that has been mainstream since the 70's heck, it was on national tv on SNL and nobody got upset, here's the transcript for your edification.

[ SUPER: SALISBURY MANOR - 1730 ]
Noblewoman: What a splendid party! I do believe everyone of any importance in England is here tonight.
Nobleman: Who would miss a party given by Lord Salisbury?
Butler: [ waiting at the door for guests to arrive ] Lord and Lady Wilkinson!
Lord Worcestershire: A marvelous entertainment, Salisbury! These chopped steaks are terrific, especially with this delicious mushroom sauce.
Lord Salisbury: Thank you, Coming from you, Worcestershire, that certainly is a compliment. [ turns to his guests ] Lord and Lady Wilkinson, welcome!
Lord Worcestershire: Tell me, Wilkinson, what the deuce is the purpose of two swords?
Lord Wilkinson: It's simple, really. Let's say you're an an attacker. My first blade straightens you upright, while the second clips you neatly at the ankles.
Lady Wilkinson: And there's Lady Wilkinson, for attacking your opponent's underarms and legs!
Butler: The Earl of Sandwich!
Nobleman: Tell me, have you seen Lord Cardigan?
Noblewoman: I understand he was turned away at the door..
Nobleman: Lord Cardigan? Why in heaven's name?
Noblewoman: He wasn't properly attired. Evidently, he came in a sweater.
Nobleman: Odd. I saw Lord Ascot, and he got in..
Butler: The Duke and Duchess of Argyll!
Lord Worcestershire: You know, Sandwich.. were the Sandwich Islands named after you?
Earl of Sandwich: Oh, no. Everyone asks me that, but I'm afraid nothing has ever been named after a member of my family.
Servant: Excuse me, your Lordship, but would you care for one of Lord Salisbury's steaks?
Earl of Sandwich: Yes, I would. Would you bring it to me with a couple slices of pumpernickel, please?
Servant: Yes. [ steps away ]
Butler: Lord and Lady Doucebag!
Lord Salisbury: Well, well, well.. I was just asking Lord Sandwich, "Where the devil are those Douchebags?"
Lady Doucebag: Well, it has been impossible to get him out of his workshop! He has been working day and night.
Lord Salisbury: You, Douchebag? Well, I wasn't aware you dabbled in that sort of thing. What in heaven's name are you working on?
Lord Doucebag: Well, I would be happy to tell you.. but perhaps after you have finished eating.
Lord Salisbury: Well, here is Chambers right now. Would you like something to eat?
Lord Doucebag: We're not too hungry right now - just a plate of raw vegetables.
Lord Salisbury: Would you like some dresing with that?
