Lee Corso lowers the boom
10/16/2008 9:09:52 AM

The only bad part about my college football gamedays is all the cool stuff I miss in postgame. The crazies who call the radio shows, or the breakdowns on the tube.

Perfect example -- I just now found out what ESPN's Lee Corso had to say about the Oklahoma Sooners a few minutes after their loss to Texas:

"They're a top-10 team offensively, but they don't have a pass rush. They make stupid mistakes on defense. They play poorly in the kicking game. They faked a punt that killed them. They had a kickoff return against them. That was not a number one football team's performance, particularly on defense. They gave up 45 points and 438 points."

Deep breath.

"There's no doubt in my mind that Texas absolutely wanted this football game more. The best players did not win this game. The best team won this game. They wanted it more. On the sideline, you could see they had leadership. Oklahoma has no leadership on defense."

Has to be the first time the GameDay crew has provided the Sooners bulletin board reading. Should be enough there to last the rest of the season.

Are you disputing any of that? Looks like Corso was on the money if you were watching that game without OU or Texas blinders. A rule on bulletin material: Usually, that stuff needs to be untrue or off base. If someone calls you out for a bad performance, and the performance was, in fact, bad...That is called 'calling it like you see it.'

Hardly accurate. When Reynolds left the game, Texas has -3 yards rushing, and other than the return for a touchdown, OU's deffense had nutralized the UT offense. Enough said.

See, here's the deal...bulletin board material is when someone says something that is pretty much not true.

I'm not a big Corso guy, but I think he kind of nailed this one.

I watched the game every play of it and the defense did not have a good game. But Corso did not talk this trash about USC 's poor performance against Oregon State did he?

When LSU gave up 44 points to Kentucky last year he didn't talk this trash! I quess a number one team can't have an off day? Can't wait to hear from Corso after Texas goes down to Missouri and OU rises above once again!

Corso sort of hit the nail on the head with our Defense. I don't know how everyone else feels but I'm sooooo sick and tired of watching us line in 15 yards off the receiver in soft zone coverage. Then the other team just nickle and dimes us down the field. Is being able to stop the pass too much to ask? Am I being unreasonable?

I am a die-hard Sooner fan and have been attending OU games since 1963. We moved out of state two years ago and have been relegated to getting our Sooner news from OU Insider, not discussing it with other Sooner fans. I urge each of you to step back and take a hard look at our program. CORSO WAS RIGHT! Our defense has given up 40-plus points in big games at least 4 times (Southern Cal, Boise State, W. Virginia, and now Texas--ugh). See a trend? We have lost our last 4 BCS bowls and 3 out of our last 4 Texas games. See a trend?
Our failure to effectively run block goes back to A.D. (yes, Adrian), where often we could not count on three yards for a first down when we had to have one. We had similar problems last year. This year--see a trend? And our special teams are, well, not so special.

Then there's the coaches. We won a NC in 2000 with many of Blake's players and Bob Stoops. We have better players now and still Bob Stoops. What's missing? Mangino-gone; Mike Stoops-gone; Leach-gone. Way past time to make changes with several assistant coaches. Either Stoops does that or we don't win another NC.

Case closed.
