'The Boz' is back
4/13/2009 6:37:44 PM

A few leftovers from Brian Bosworth's flag football appearance last Saturday, his first organized (well, semi-organized) game on Owen Field since Nov. 8, 1986 (OU 77, Missouri 0)…

He is blown away OU's facilities upgrade since his era.

"It's amazing," he said. "It would be an honor to come back and play when you have facilities like this. The kids that come into the program now need to take it for what it's worth. You've got a first-class organization, you've got a first-class coach, you've got fans that absolutely adore them. So they should come out here and work harder than they've ever worked, reach down and dig deeper than they ever thought they could.

"They've got something really special here, and they've just gotta keep working on it, create that chemistry that's going to get them that last game, put that last game to bed."

So yes, even "The Boz" is well aware of OU's BCS deficiencies. He's also aware of the Sooners' proficiencies.

"They're real deep at linebacker now. I like that, because the game has changed so much, the speed of the game," he said. "It's still physical, but when you compartmentalize the field the way they have, you've got to have athletes that are basically free safeties and strong safeties that can run and attack like linebackers. I like all of their linebackers."

Bosworth keeps up with the other side of the ball as well.

"Offensively, we've just got to keep doing what we've been doing," he said. "A lot of young receivers have to learn how to step up. A guy like Bradford, I think that he can show them what to do if they don't know already."

This was OU's first Varsity O Legends Flag Football Classic. Should there be more?

"I think there should be," Bosworth said. "I remember back in the day they had the real (alumni) game, when you had the old guys out here actually playing. That gets a little dangerous because you don't train all year long and you can get some serious injuries.

"But out here it's fun because you get a mix of the young and the old and you just have fun with it. I think the crowd enjoyed it. I think they should do it."

Bet this becomes bigger with every year. An OU official said the football office has been besieged with phone calls from former players since word about the game got out.
