Stoops Denies Notre Dame Rumors
11/28/2009 7:33:00 PM

NORMAN – Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops quickly shot down rumors that he has an interview set up with Notre Dame.

Several reports surfaced after the Sooners' 27-0 Bedlam victory over Oklahoma State that Irish officials would either fly to Norman sometime Sunday to interview Stoops or fly the OU coach to South Bend, Ind.

Asked in a text if he could confirm or deny the report, even if it was off the record, Stoops' return text to me read: "On the record, I am not (interviewing). First I've heard of this (rumor)."

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick also denied the Stoops speculation when contacted by the Chicago Tribune while he was attending the Irish's game Saturday at Stanford.

"Anything you hear about a contact with a coach is absolutely wrong," Swarbrick told the Tribune.

As of Saturday night, Notre Dame didn't have a job opening. Speculation is that Irish coach Charlie Weis could get fired as early as Sunday, but Swarbrick said the timetable for the meeting is "undetermined."

Here's one thing to remember: Stoops doesn't do interviews. He believes his track record at OU speaks volumes, and should do all the talking for him to any prospective AD.

As I've stated in recent columns, I don't think Stoops is going anywhere. And I'm not certain Notre Dame would be willing to shell out the millions it would take to even get Stoops to listen.

As competitive as Stoops is, I can't see him walking away from a school that has been extremely loyal to him after his 11th Sooner team has struggled through a mediocre 7-5 season.

Stoops strikes me as the kind of person who would like to leave a job when the cupboards are full and the team is winning big. He's obviously in the midst of a rebuilding job with the Sooners.

And then there's this: As it currently stands, OU is a better job than Notre Dame. It isn't even close. And that won't be changing anytime soon.

Perhaps Irish eyes will be shining on Stoops, but I just can't see it.

Hey Dave, you're wrong. ND is a much better job than ou is and if big blame bob is ever going to leave, he'd better do it while he still has a chance. This year is just a precursor to how bad the next few years will be in Norman. You can't win with 2nd level recruits and you darned sure can't be a prestigious team when you can't win on the road. Get used to 4th place in the South because you'll be there for several year to come.

kcc12 - Maybe you should get your facts straight before running your mouth. Rivals has us with the #4, Scout has us #1, and ESPN #8 in 2010 recruiting class. As far as ND being a better job than OU? Not sure how you get that. ND hasn't been relevant in years. The tradition and history between the two schools is a push. Sure ND was good during the sweater vest and leather helmet days, but nobody has dominated like OU has since the end of WWII. This includes recent history too, as we have the 2nd most wins this decade behind Boise State. I understand your bitterness from getting your tail kicked today......again.

Bob Stoops left Norman at halftime of today's match-up with OSU for Palo Alto, CA,where Stoops coached the Irish in the second half against Stanford. Thanks for 11 years, Bob.

He'd be a bigger fool than several of these posters if he'd leave OU for ND. What do you mean by "a school that has been extremely loyal to him......."? You mean they've been nice enough not to fire him for having a team struggle after being decimated by injuries and being in the NC game last year and having the 3rd best WP among actives and showing great character and on and on and on? Yeah. Nice of em to show so much loyalty when they could have gotten rid of him.??????? And rebuilding job? Puleeeeze. What happened last time after 5 losses? Pretty quick "rebuilding job" huh? You act like there's no talent down there, Dave, and he's gonna have to claw his way back to the top after 2 or 3 rebuilding years. Do you not know the team or the coach any better than that?

Leave it to Sittler to write about something that has nothing to do with one of Stoops' more impressive victories. If you wanna write about gossip, send your resume to the Daily News in NYC, otherwise cover the game you were paid to cover, not this ND crap.
