Overlooked success: Union QB Chase Boyce deserves spot among state's top QBs
Union's Chase Boyce passed for 2,300 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World file

All-World quarterbacks.
Let us know what you think:
This summer the World will rank the top players in the Tulsa area at each position, and we’ll ask you to tell us who you think is the best by voting online. Today, we kick things off with Union’s Chase Boyce and the area’s top quarterbacks.
Voting ends 5 p.m. Aug. 3. Results will appear in our football preview. Let us know what you think.
Sand Springs' Johnny Deaton, Booker T. Washington's Eric Bennett and Central's Demarco Cobbs are often the first names mentioned when fans and the media discuss the area's top high school quarterbacks.
All had outstanding junior seasons last year and all are highly ranked major college recruits, although Bennett and Cobbs are projected at other positions.
However, Union's Chase Boyce also deserves to be included high on any list of elite quarterbacks.
In his first year as a starter in 2008, Boyce was among Class 6A's passing leaders with 2,300 yards and 22 touchdowns with only seven interceptions as he helped lead Union to the Class 6A state title. He is No. 4 on the Tulsa World's preseason ranking of area quarterbacks.
"Chase
does get overlooked," Union coach Kirk Fridrich said. "I think that may be because he was surrounded by so much talent last year. But his statistics stand on their own. He was outstanding for us last year and we expect him to be even better this year. He's improved his size and strength. In spring practice, he picked up where he left off last year and didn't show any rust."
Boyce had his own answer during spring practice on why he's not regarded higher despite all of his accomplishments.
"A couple more inches," said the 5-foot-11 Boyce as he pointed just above his head.
Fridrich believes Boyce can be a successful quarterback at the major
college level if given the opportunity. Cincinnati, Purdue and Utah have shown interest in him.
"He can be the right fit for a college that doesn't believe you have to be at least 6-2 to be a great quarterback," Fridrich said.
Boyce's best performance last season came in the 6A state final against Jenks. After Jenks overcame a 17-point deficit to tie the game at 20 late in the third quarter, Boyce responded as a cool veteran would as he directed the go-ahead scoring drive, capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Roberson. Boyce added another TD pass early in the fourth period en route to a 34-20 victory.
"He plays well under pressure," Fridrich said. "He treats it as a game and he loves the competition."
Boyce also is an avid student of football video.
"What makes Chase so good is he's one of the biggest studiers of opposing defenses," Roberson said. "In fifth hour he's an office aide, so he'll pop in a tape and then right after practice he'll go right back in the film room. He always knows where the weakness is in the defense and he knows exactly what he's doing each play."
Fridrich added: "Chase couldn't have a better coach to work with than (quarterback coach) Josh Blankenship. Chase spends a lot of time working with Josh and he absorbs all of that time."
Fridrich also likes how Boyce has emerged as a team leader. That's been illustrated in the last few weeks as Boyce has welcomed senior tailback Colton Dost, who moved from Jenks.
"Chase has really made Colton feel at home," Fridrich said. "Chase is a great teammate and a senior leader."
In 2009, Boyce will have a chance to become the first quarterback in Union history to lead the Redskins to two state titles.

Overrated is probably the correct word instead of overlooked. Oberste is the only one of these QBs who made it to the final round of Saturday's Top Gun contest. Spencer Cobb of Madill was the winner and Edmond North's QB was second and they aren't even mentioned here.

Wow, yerout. That's pretty harsh. I would imagine that Beau has had some input on what he wanted to do and where he wanted to play. Apparently they never found what they felt to be the right fit for him or circumstances beyond their control dictated a change. It's really hard to speculate on their situation without having walked in their shoes. As far as tuition payments, I'm guessing they have that figured out but since you're so concerned I'll bet if you provide them your e-mail address they'd be glad to inform you when their payment is made. Good luck and best wishes for the upcoming season Beau.

Hey yerout...I am not sure who is giving you your information and for that matter why you seem to be so interested in the Marsaln family. For your information, this is Kelly Marsaln and if you really must know, I do work for Metro, as well as the fact that Beau has been attending since Jan. Just so that you dont continue to spread lies about my family, Beau has attended 4 schools including Metro since 5th grade! We have had some unfortunate family circumstances that have caused us to have to move. Don't worry about my family and our financial and professional situation. I hope that from this point on you would focus on your own life, and not my family!

Ok , so yerout went right for the throat, he does makes some good points. The kid has been at Metro, Locust, practiced at Muskogee, Blackwell, Jenks and now back at Metro. I saw some of the same comments on a Rivals site and coachesaid. Many of those threads ask, "how does the boy become eligible at all these different schools?"
Good luck .... looks like everyone is watching.
Glad you got hired at Metro Mom.

DMD- glad to know that you have kept up with Beau. He is a great kid and is deserving of all the recognition that he has received. I just wish that people would just worry about their own kids and not mine! When you walk with the Lord he will guide your every move...

Wow, I didn't know people have to air there dirty laundry. I thought the comments were about Chase Boyce rather than all of this mess. I think Chase is the BEST and I wish him all the luck in the world. He will show how great he is this football season.

FYI JimPat... You say NONE of these QB's placed in Top Gun??? WRONG!! Deaton didn't even participate due to a sprained ankle... so you don't know what you're tlaking about.. Chase Boyce mex threw a horrible 51 yards.. Deaton throws 70-72 consistently... Once again - its all about Union. Deaton is ranked 6th & 7th in the NATION as a dual threat (per Rivals & Scout) and the article is about OVERLOOKED Chase Boyce who can only throw a football 51 yards.. leave it to the Tulsa World... They can't write a story on the NUMBER ONE guy who is NATIONALLY ranked... or him competing at the Nike Camp OR ELite 11 - where he impressed ESPN's Tom Luginbill...they write about a Union kid... Just another year of the same old stuff.. Oberste is another GREAT QB. The World gives him no pub either. Deaton, Oberste, & Bennett.. good luck this season - put up another good season & best wishes at whatever school is lucky enough to get you, but don't expect the Tulsa World to put you on the first page.. unless you change zip codes.

Barry Lewis MUST live in Union or be friends with the Boyce's. He REALLY neds to get on some of the wesbites and check Boyce's position ratings, combine stats & times, etc. from some of the guys QUALIFIED to say if he's a D-1 recruit or not... living in Union District isn't pre-requisite Barry. It's your your QB trhowing ability, agility, 40 time, your throwing release, your max throw, your shuttle times, veritcal leaps. and alot of other things that makes you get looked at... There's a reason he's not a 3 star or 4 star... not to be dissing hte kid, but BArry you should KNOW that. Come on, quit calling him "overlooked" and show us more coverage on Cobbs and Deaton... Write a story on their Ntional rankings... ENOUGH UNION ALREADY! The season hasn't even started yet...

Given the fact that it takes "Great Talent" by a quarterback to perform in each game to even make it to the playoffs let alone The State Championship game. And I believe this "Talent is measured by the end of the season. A quarterback is not measured by one game alone. And given "The Fact"...that Chase Boyce holds the "Gold Ball"...I believe his Talent makes him the #1 QB in the state... all the other quaterbacks are good but have a little work to do...Its one thing to say your better than someone...But its another thing to say your better than a " CHAMPION"...And that champion is CHASE BOYCE....So goodluck to all.
