EDMOND — Sawyer Kollmorgen expected to finish in the top three in the Top Gun Challenge on Saturday night at Edmond Memorial High School.

But the Jenks quarterback, along with Union's Chase Boyce, Sallisaw's Matt Oberste and NOAH's Joe Sabatini, failed to qualify for the finals of the two-day event that tested quarterbacks in throwing accuracy, deep ball as well as running events.

Sand Springs' Johnny Deaton made the trip, but did

not compete due to a sprained right ankle he suffered June 2 at team camp.

"I just wanted to see what everyone else was made of," said Deaton, who has given a verbal commitment to play football at Oklahoma State. "It's difficult to watch. I'm too competitive to just sit."

Madill junior Spencer Bond won the overall competition.

"I just came in to have fun," Bond said. "I was trying to do my best, but I really didn't know what to expect. I'm excited."

Kollmorgen recorded a deep throw of 52 yards and a stationary accuracy of 32, but it wasn't good enough to reach the finals.

"There's a lot of good quarterbacks out here," Kollmorgen said. "I think I could have performed a lot better than I did.

"I gave all I could. I really thought I would at least finish in the top 10. And I expected that if I couldn't win it, I would place in the top three. But that didn't happen."

Boyce recorded a deep throw of 51 yards and scored 20 on the stationary accuracy, again not good enough for the finals.

"I wasn't able to do the physical part of the competition Saturday morning because of a toe problem," the Union quarterback said.

The weekend gave Kollmorgen and Boyce a chance to get acquainted.

"I had a chance to get kind of close to Sawyer," Boyce said. "I hadn't talked to him much until this weekend."

Deaton said his ankle is still a little sore and stiff, but stated that he would be ready for the start of practice in August.

Swayze is a sophomore who started as a freshman for Purcell. He's a stud that will play anywhere he wants in the entire country. Reminds you a lot of Tebow.
