Lincoln Christian wideout Roman Wilson was amazed when he looked at his state-leading receiving totals last year.
Wilson had 93 receptions for 1,531 yards and 22 touchdowns.
"I didn't pay much attention to them (statistics) until the very end," Wilson said. "When I saw them, I thought, 'Whoa, that's a lot of catches.' "
Wilson, also a defensive back and kicker, led Class 2A in scoring with 235 points to help the Bulldogs reach the Class 2A semifinals.
Those are impressive totals for anyone, but especially for someone who only started playing football two years ago as a sophomore.
"I was a soccer player and then when I was in seventh and eighth grade I was a full-time basketball player," Wilson said. "I got tired of that and then I came out for football."
And going into his senior season, he is ranked No. 1 on the Tulsa World's summer rankings of area
receivers.
Lincoln Christian coach Darren Melton anticipates that Wilson will be even better this season, although it could be difficult to post better statistics.
"As far as the numbers, you can't just look at those," Melton said. "His speed is better, he has a better grasp and understanding of the coverages having been through another season. There's more than just reacting for him.
"We're not worried about numbers. He had an awesome spring. He's a great receiver and has a great attitude."
Roman Wilson also is faster this year after running on Lincoln Christian's track team for the first time in the spring. And he has gained 25 pounds to move to 185.
Wilson's brother Cody Wilson was an All-State linebacker last year and is currently playing for the University of Tulsa. Roman Wilson also is likely headed to college football after this season.
He's attracted the interest of several Ivy League schools.
Roman Wilson did not see much time at receiver as a sophomore, but made a big impact as a kicker. In the last two seasons, he has converted 144 extra points.
His chance for increased playing time at wideout last year occurred when Jarrett Melton suffered a preseason injury that sidelined him until late in the playoffs.
Wilson, however, never anticipated he would produce such eye-popping numbers as a receiver.
"I knew I was quick and fast, but I didn't know I would have such a big year last year," Wilson said. "After Jarrett got hurt, I stepped into that role as the go-to guy."
Wilson also is a starting defensive back and could play that position in college.
"I like to hit people," he said. "I like the physicality of it."
Wilson rarely is off the field as a starting wideout, defensive back and placekicker.
"His soccer background helps him because those guys run all over the field and never get to rest," Darren Melton said.
Last year, Wilson had a touchdown catch in 11 consecutive games and also had a stretch of at least 140 receiving yards in four straight games.
"He's a great kid and a great example for our other players," Melton said. "We look for him to do great things again this year."
