High School Football Notebook: Frizzell answers the call

Union's Bobby Lind takes the field with a U.S. flag during team introductions before the Jenks/Union game on Friday. Lind was one of four Union football players who ran out with U.S. flags to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks. Holland Hall junior tailback Luke Frizzell answered the challenge put forth this week by coach Tag Gross.

"We emphasized all week about being more physical after the Cascia Hall loss," Gross said. "Luke and (linemen) Billy LaFortune and Michael Lewis at left tackle and guard really responded."

Frizzell carried 22 times for 164 yards, scoring on touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards as Holland Hall broke into the win column with a 41-14 victory over Victory Christian.

"He got to running pretty well," Gross said. "We are kind of thin at tailback. Kit Cranford started and got banged up.

"Luke and Chandler Hicks had some nice gains, and we sort of settled on Luke because he was running well. He carried a couple of defenders into the end zone with him on one touchdown."

Pick six: Oologah linebackers John VanSingel and Dakota Hudgens each returned an interception for a touchdown in the Mustangs' 35-13 win over Coweta.

"We made some major improvements this week," first-year Oologah coach Brandon Craig said. "We didn't feel like we did some fundamental things last week against Claremore. John had a highlight film."

VanSingel led Oologah with 24 tackles and Hudgens finished with 15.

On offense, Josh Collier carried 22 times for 139 yards, 20 on a touchdown run. He also scored on a 33-yard pass from Alex Brunson.

Lamb injury update: Bixby quarterback Kevin Lamb exited Friday night's 35-14 loss to Glenpool after suffering a bruised shoulder. He did not play in the second half. He is listed as day-to-day, coach Pat McGrew said.

"He had a slight concussion a week ago. Then he suffered a bruised shoulder on his non-throwing arm," McGrew said. "He is a leader, even from the sidelines. He was coaching his back-up, T.J. Eckert."

Storm erases Roughers' deficit: Muskogee trailed 10-0 after one quarter when its game Friday at Norman North was suspended due to lightning and then canceled because of the weather.

Norman North's Jamar Harris returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD that was wiped out by the cancellation.

Enid defeats Sapulpa: Enid's Jonathan Burton rushed for 214 yards and two TDs in a 22-3 victory at Sapulpa on Friday.

The Chieftains avoided a shutout on Brody Moses' 39-yard field goal with 4:06 left in the fourth quarter.

Sign of the times: Bartlesville is 2-0, but don't expect head coach Ron Smith to start celebrating.

His Bruins were 2-0 through the first two weeks last year but didn't make the playoffs.

"When we don't turn the ball over, we have a chance to be successful," Smith said. "We turned it over four times at Stillwater last week."

The Bruins suffered one late turnover, but it wasn't a factor in the 42-6 win over Ponca City on Friday.

"We corrected some things, but we're still missing assignments, missing blocks," Smith said.

Bruins quarterback Kirby Schoenthaler was 15-of-18 passing for 238 yards and two TDs. Mike Thompson had five receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown.
