JENKS SENIOR TIGHT end Tyler Ott had a special night at Friday's MidFirst Backyard Bowl.

Besides helping Jenks edge Union 27-25 with three catches and a touchdown, Ott was honored before the game when he received a $500 college scholarship awarded by the U.S. Air Force for being his team's top student-athlete. Union linebacker Bobby Lind also received a $500 scholarship.

Ott is looking for many more good moments at Chapman Stadium because he is verbally committed to play for the University of Tulsa.

"You can't beat this, bringing the Backyard Bowl back to our home and beating Union in my last guaranteed time to play them," said Ott, who scored on a fourth-down pass from Sawyer Kollmorgen in the second quarter. "And that's a crazy thing, scoring a touchdown at my future school. I was wide open on that play, I was just hoping I wasn't going to get starry-eyed and drop the ball."

Jenks (2-0), which had dropped the past two Backyard Bowls in overtime, moves to No. 1 in the Tulsa World's Class 6A rankings, switching spots with Union (1-1), which dropped to No. 2.

For Ott, his last Backyard Bowl game as a player was much more enjoyable than the 2007 edition when his subpar extra-point snap in overtime was costly in the 43-42 loss.

"That's still burned in my head," Ott said. "That's something I don't want to ever happen again. I make sure every day in practice that I'm working on that."

The victory for Jenks, which lost both its games against Union last year, was important for several reasons, according to Ott.

"This is a huge confidence booster," Ott said. "Everyone knows about the problems we've been having. We wanted to come out and make a statement, that we weren't going to stop. We've had some hard times, but we played as a team and stuck together."

Union and Jenks have combined to win the last 13 6A state titles and have met in the state title game six times in the last 11 years.

"I just hope we get to meet them in the finals again," Ott said. "It would be fun, another battle to the end."

Kiefer enjoys fantastic finish: Kiefer moves up to No. 7 in the Class B rankings after a 14-12, double-overtime win over Davenport, which falls five slots to No. 8.

"It's a monumental win for us," Kiefer coach Josh Calvert said. "I had several people come up to me after the game and tell me it's the biggest win in school history, at least in the last 30 years."

Kiefer tied the game at 6 with 1:19 left on Josh Ralston's 1-yard TD run, which was set up by Nick Livingston's 40-yard catch.

In overtime, Kiefer missed a 37-yard field goal that hit the crossbar after penalties derailed a possession that once reached the Davenport 1. In the second OT, Ostin Broadhead, usually a quarterback, scored on a 10-yard run off a jet-sweep. Ralston then added the two-point conversion run that proved to be the difference. Davenport countered with a TD, but Sergio Lazoya came up with a sack on the conversion to seal the win for the Trojans.

"It was mayhem after that sack," Calvert said. "You would have thought we had won the Super Bowl. This game is something I'll remember for a long time. This win should earn us respect across the state."

Breakthrough wins at Catoosa, Hale: Great defensive efforts helped veteran coaches Aaron Meier of Catoosa and Anthony Fogle of Hale gain their first wins at their respective schools on Friday. Catoosa beat Skiatook 6-0 and Hale blanked McLain 29-0.

"We only came away with six points from seven opportunities in the red zone," Meier said. "That's just a result of inexperience. But I credit our defense. They were incredible, giving up only 47 yards. They played lights out."

Meier praised Dustin Howard and Clay Ratliff as defensive leaders. Ratliff had eight tackles and two interceptions.

At Hale, Fogle's son, Justin, rushed for 120 yards and three TDs. He also had eight tackles, including four for losses, and teamed with Justin Hunter for a safety that opened the scoring after a scoreless first half.

"Justin (Fogle) is playing at such a high level," Anthony Fogle said. "I've been coaching him for several years and he's playing some of his best football. Everything is clicking for him. Justin Hunter was a disruptive force in the middle and Daniel Pender also played a great game with eight tackles. Our defense allowed only 18 yards. It was a complete team effort and a huge win for us."

Comets advance: Kelley moved up two slots to No. 7 in the 5A rankings after a 10-9 victory over 4A No. 3 Oklahoma City McGuinness. Kelley's Justin Turner had 13 tackles, including three sacks, recovered a fumble and blocked an extra-point kick and Jonathan Nuding had 18 tackles and three sacks.

Union needs to steal Jenk's coaches not players. Union has such a poor pass defense. Union QB must have tunnel vision and can not see the 3 defenders on each of the receivers every time he threw the football.

Union was outplayed and out coached, AGAIN!

Again? Didn't Union win 3 out of the last 4 prior to this game?

Just a reminder but since 1996 jenks has 9 state titles and Union has four. The overall record is very much in Jenks' favor. Those who thought this program would disappear check again and if you look at the past you'll find that overwhelmingly the kids that play at Jenks grew up in the program except for a few here and there. Jenks is the best program around they win in nearly every sport and their academics is second to no one in the country as far as public schools go. Go get em' Trojans.

Enjoy the Backyard Bowl for what it is -- high school football at it's best. Both schools have good, solid programs and the winner alternates enough to keep it exciting each year.
