Slide Show: Sandites run away with it
Dixon has 334 yards, 5 TDs; Sand Springs 41, Memorial 27

Terrance Dixon is giving notice that Sand Springs isn't about to give in without star quarterback Johnny Deaton.

In what was one of the most memorable individual performances of the young season, Dixon ran for 334 yards and five touchdowns on 40 carries to lead the Sand Springs Sandites over the Memorial Chargers, 41-27, in the opening game of district play in Class 6A-3.

The two schools played an offensive showcase game last year in the Sandites' 61-42 win in Sand Springs. Few thought this year would live up to that, as both schools lost their starting quarterbacks in the season's opening weeks. Dixon and Chargers running back Damien Zachary made sure it was just as entertaining.

Nearly all of Dixon's yards came in only three quarters. He began slowly, fumbling near the end of the first quarter and Memorial linebacker Blaine Verner picked up the loose ball and ran it 50 yards for the first score of the game.

That was the only mistake Dixon would make, as he burned the Chargers (2-2) defense on the ground for runs of 24, 16 and 35 yards in the second quarter.

"He's a guy we've had to hang our hat on with Deaton going down and he's stepped up to the challenge," Sand Springs coach Dustin Kinard said.

Zachary did everything he could to match Dixon. The senior followed Dixon's 24-yard TD run in the second quarter with a 61-yard score of his own to give Memorial a 13-7 lead.

The two star running backs traded touchdowns again — Dixon with a 1-yard score to close the half and Zachary with a 61-yard scamper to open the third quarter.

But the Sandites (3-1) scored three unanswered TDs, including two Dixon runs, to open a commanding lead in the fourth.

"We were ready to go, our kids played hard," Memorial coach Tony Daniels said. "Those missed tackles too many times on Dixon just got us."

The Chargers managed to trade touchdowns in fourth quarter to stay within striking distance, but DJ Dempsey was stopped a yard short of a first down on the Chargers' final offensive play of the game.

Zachary finished with 150 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. Verner and Dempsey each scored a touchdown and collected a Sand Springs turnover for Memorial.

I see that the Tulsa World put most of the picture and story on Sand Springs win below the fold.

I've said it before and I will say it again. Terrance Dixon will be playing for a division 1 school by this time next year. Wake up TU and OU because OSU has the inside track on this kid and rumor has it that Arkansas and Kansas State have been sniffing around. A little birdie told me that Oregon State has been watching film as well. TD, keep up the good work......
Go Sandites

It's Tulsa World, not Sand Springs World, my view.

What the,

It was also a Tulsa team that was defeated.

Little bit of history for you. There has been bad blood between the World and Sand Springs going all the way back to the Charles Pages era. Charles Page died in 1926.
